There are different species of yellow jackets, but I do believe you are correct, these look like bald faced hornets. Southern Yellow Jackets are the ones that live in subterranean nests. We mostly have those in FL, I’ve never seen a nest like this around my neck of the woods.

My uncle was a contractor worked all over the country. He used to use super 77777 spray adhesive. Work like magic he would just seal off the entrance or the whole nest in one pass. The other one he would do is use an old wet and dry vac with the filter. He would get the hose next to the nest whether it be in the air or in the ground. They would come out of there until there was nothing left and then he would shut it off and duct tape the ends shut🎉 the noise would attract them in the vibration and they would just keep coming till they were gone🎉 another one that worked with the sprinkler on full blast directly underneath it they just drowned. You just have to leave it on long enough they just keep fighting the water🎉 those are my tips I know you're the professional🎉 wondering if you use any of these techniques. Use a WD40 type nozzle with tube to spray further into the opening Then poke small holes into the sides of the nest and then spray into the newly created holes.

When I was a kid we used to shoot these big nests with our slingshots. Some iron/lead balls or rocks if that's all you have, the hornets would get VERY angry. I never got stung once as they seem to have a definite range of nest defense. Cool Viddy!

When I was a teenager I worked at a restaurant that had outdoor parties. A coworker and I were pushmowing around apple trees in preparation for an event and noticed a wasp nest. We thought it would be a great idea to pitch rocks at it. After a few misses, my coworker threw a strike and busted it wide open, releasing a cloud of wasps heading right at us. I turned to run, forgetting about the push mower behind me and immediately tripped over it like an idiot. Needless to say the wasps got me. 19 stings all over face and ears. That’s what I got for being stupid.
