Great analysis. Two points about lions though that seemed to be overlooked - 1) lions typically hunt in packs so the generalisation that they can single-handedly take down large prey may be overstated, and 2) it's often not the male lions that hunt but the females, so their application of hunting practice in a combat situation may also be overstated.

On the topic of bear vs lion this question has been answered, and John was heading in the right direction, but not far enough. During the California gold rush there were animal fights set up to entertain prospectors. The audience quickly got tired of the bears easily killing everything put before them, caribou, bulls, etc. So they shipped in African lions as they thought they might have a chance, and while they looked and sounded impressive, the bears easily crushed their skulls, and the lions had no way of attacking the bears effectively. A bear's hide and bones are both far too thick for a lion to damage them significantly. Also John needs to respect moose more, a moose is significantly scarier than a cape buffalo. Cape buffalo are herd animals, scared of being isolated, always looking for safety in numbers, a moose can and will charge an adult male salmon fed kodiak bear without a second thought if it looks at it sideways.

Dear Reginald Benedict Victor Hugo Ashford, I appreciate your educated response based on data rather than imaginative hypotheticals. John brought up the data point that the Roman’s reported that a tiger (which outweighs a lion significantly), would kill a lion. However the matchup of a costal brown bear (i.e. Grizzly) vs a Siberian tiger was not discussed. If John gave a slight edge to the grizzly over a lion, but we know a tiger beats a lion, what would win between a tiger and grizzly? Thank you in advance for your thoughtful response. It will certainly allow me to sleep. Cordially, Mike
@R._B._Victor_Hugo_Ashford
@R._B._Victor_Hugo_Ashford 2 жыл бұрын
@@mikemoriarty6061 I think a large male kodiak bear would still beat a large male siberian tiger. The strength difference between them is just too great I think. The heaviest siberian tigers are only just barely the same weight as the very smallest male kodiak bears. But the largest Kodiak bears are more than twice the weight of the largest siberian tigers. You wouldn't expect a 60kg man to have a chance against a 120kg man in a fight given a similar amount of training and musculature, I don't see why it wouldn't hold true for these animals either.

Only two MORONS would discuss this for 37 minutes. A grizzly would annihilate a gorilla or lion in any environment. They're over twice as large, have thicker hide, their claws are 3x longer than a lion's claws, and gorillas have no claws at all. This was the dumbest debate I've ever heard. I may be late to the party, but here's something to consider. Asian bears fight and kill tigers in around 40% of attacks. And tigers were known to kill lions in the Roman colosseum. The north American grizzly is 3 times the size of Asian bears. Lions form of attack is the neck, grizzlies have extremely loose skin on their necks. Lions are pack hunters, that's why they can take down such formidable prey. They might be more bold because of that fact, but being bold without backup is a sure fire way to lose in one on one combat. Grizzlies being solitary animals makes them much more defensive in a fight. Bottom line is, one on one, no animal on earth beats a grizzly consistently in a fight situation. Including humans.
@Bellasrius

Tiger were not known for killing lions in Rome. There’s 0 historic evidence for that claim. The claim comes from poems & marshals independent account of a tiger killing a lion. Which He labelled as “shocking” which tells us that it was an unusual scene & lions were always the expected winners.

Here are some key takeaways from the conversation between Lex Fridman and John Danaher about who would win in a fight between a grizzly bear, silverback gorilla, and lion: - They discuss the importance of several factors like intelligence, weight, strength, bite force, claws, aggression, etc. Danaher argues you can't just rely on intuitions about which is most formidable. - Danaher outlines his framework for evaluating combat effectiveness based on skills, attributes, experience, and specific elements like ability to initiate, disengage, endure fights, and efficiently finish opponents. - He argues gorillas, though strong, have little real combat experience compared to lions who regularly take down very dangerous prey like cape buffalos. Leopards have even been documented killing gorillas. - For lion vs bear, he believes neither could easily kill the other - lions can't strangle bears who can stand up, and bears can't easily pin lions. It would come down to endurance which favors the bear, but lions are less risk-averse. - In a neutral cage fight, Danaher slightly favors the bear over the lion due to size/endurance, but in the wild the lion would likely intimidate a risk-averse bear. - Danaher clearly believes the lion is overall the most effective combatant compared to a silverback gorilla or grizzly bear due to skill, experience, aggression, intelligence, etc.

leopards documented killing gorillas is based on gorilla in leopard scat, which could be from many things....a ambush on a sleeping gorilla, an infant, a wounded gorilla many factors. God I would love to see more stuff on Gorillas, how they actually look using full force in a fight, because when they fight with other gorillas from what i understand they arent using full strength at all I wonder what their strategy would be, when they flail their arms they dont look that crazy powerful but that could be me being stupid, if they could direct a full force punch like a human they could obliterate a lot of animals easily. If they could grapple another animal and get a solid bite its game over with a bite force like that, if somehow a gorilla was trained in a grappling form god they would be insane with their build

Tactics are irrelevant. Even if the gorilla is twice as smart as either of the other, it’s not smart enough to override its biology and not go “apeshit” Despite being stronger, it’s not going to plan or strategize. It’s going to run in like it does vs other gorillas and it’s going to get mauled.

Let's be realistic here... A fully grown brown bear (Kodiak for example) weighs 2 times more than a lion or a tiger and 3 times more than a guerilla. Bears are also very good at wrestling. Have you ever seen a bear fight? They are much much faster and agile than most people think because it is counterintuitive for an animal this heavy and full of muscle to be agile, but they really are. There is no realistic way for a tiger to quickly kill a big bear. The bear is too tough, its nech is too thick, its body will withstand the swipes of the tiger. The fight will very quickly turn into a wrestling match. The bear will simply overpower and outlast the tiger. Bears can fight each other for a long time. Fights between big cats usually only last seconds and they are exhausted. Bears are built like bulldozers. They can take a lot more damage and deliver a lot more damage that a big cat or a primate can. A gorilla doesn't have the weapons, experience, size and killing instinct to win a fight vs a big bear (or a big cat). The lion and tiger would turn into kuddly kittens when confronted with a much bigger and much tougher predator like a bear. A full-grown male bear (Grizzly, Kodiak or Polar) will absolutely devastate everything else.

Absolutely, also bringing up bears not engaging a wolverine is not a valid argument…look what small weasels let alone honey badger (still smaller than wolverine) does to packs of lions. Also there are instances of smaller Asian brown bears driving Siberian tigers off their kills to n the wild…the rock paper scissors of intimidation in the wild seems a different matter than who kills who.

Polar bear should probably have been in there. They are about twice the average size of even bigger species of Tigers, and I don't see why having the advantage of an ambush predator can bridge that gap. Lions and tigers are used to ambushing game, not something that is still twice their size but also can grab them back and bite them with an even bigger bite force then they have. They Actually we’re pretty bad at breaking down the actual question. John is talking about a lion taking out elephants and buffalos as if they do that by themselves. No single lion can kill either one of those animals and Lex thinking an animal that eats plants has a chance against an animal that eats other animals… That be said I totally agree with you on the pure gold part

This made me curious, what does a solo lion or tiger take down that is bigger then a full grown moose? I feel that those guys usually take down big game in packs, whilst bears are out there doing the yolo game.

Lions are far more efficient killing machines than bears because a bears diet is mostly plants and fish, where a lions diet is only what it kills, which is often prey a lot bigger than it is. That said.. the sheer size and power of a grizzly is far more impressive, and has so much thick fur and fat on it's body, I think the lion would have to catch the bear by the throat to get a kill.

Counterpoint to John's great argument about experience in lions: having internal battles that are not to the death allowed grizzlies to learn from their mistakes and not just for from them, possibly providing a higher fight IQ in the long run.

@@beenright5115 - I think there are much more plausible cases where the bear wins. The first swipe of a large bear could end the fight before the lion or tiger gets any damage in. It will physically force the cat away as well as the potential for lethal damage. The cat is at least as likely to run away for self preservation, knowing that it needs to be athletic to survive future hunts.
