Thank you Kit. The sunlight helps define the devices own character in my mind. The screen is not simply darker than the Carta screen, it is just different than the Carta; and you know what - I feel now I can stop worrying and learn to love the Kaleido 3 for what it is instead of what it should be.

Thanks so much, I think I was one of the chaps asking for magazine support. In the meantime I received my tab ultra c and could spend my first afternoon in the sun. Was pleasantly surprised about readly‘s increased library and the tab ultra c performance specifically on scrolling. I am very happy with it as a tablet, and thinking about getting the keyboard. In an ideal world I just want a laptop formfactor and this tablet. Like a magic keyboard on this, including the touchbar, so I dont have to reach over what I am reading. Note taking experience is excellent. I just tried OneNote, which I believe has a onyx patch and there you have access to RGB, but its still not drawing like ProCreate

Yeah, you are right, they have worked really hard to optimise the screen for one note, but it is still a workaround at best. Thanks so much for letting me know and glad you are enjoying your Tab Ultra C.

Hi Kitt, Love your reviews and it was the reason I purchased the Boox Ultra C. I'm about to return mine as I find it way too slow and clunky. Basic functionality like copying content from a Boox note to OneNote or word is missing, which is disappointing. I tried loading a pdf into the book application via OneDrive and it basically gave up. I think the screen is good and certainly easier on the eyes, but generally I think this is an expensive device for the functionality and speed it offers. It actually slows down my workflow! I may revisit this technology when it becomes more mature, but for now this technology seems too much of a compromise for my type of ediorial work. Great channel by the way.

Thanks for sharing your experience! You should be able to copy text between apps though? Not handwriting, but typed text should work? I'm curious, are you an android phone or tablet user other than this device? Thanks for the feedback, it certainly is the case that there is no one device which fits everyone's workflow! Hi Kitt, I'm an android user. I use PC and various other devices for work. To convert handwritten notes to txt isn't exactly efficient on this Tab Ultra C, so it slows down my workflow even more before I can copy that content to another application. I like the tech but for me it's really just an e-reader. If it was $200 THEN I would understand, but it's not. The experience of dealing with Onyx to return my device was so frustrating that I kept the device in the end. It will be consigned to the old phones drawer though. A real shame, but it was worth a try.

For me, the screen is too dark resulting in lowered contrast when I'm trying to read black and white text. I noticed that my phone pictures of the screen make it look lighter (and better) than it is in person. Sometimes pen strokes don't appear until a refresh (could probably be fixed in a software update). Ultimately, I don't think I will keep this device. Maybe in a few generations there will be a screen that isn't so dark. I shouldn't feel the need to use the tablet light in a well lit room. Just feels like the tech isn't there yet.

I think that sometimes first pen stroke is a little late, I've sort of adapted to holding the pen a split second before stroking. I think that this is something that they do to turn off the wacom layer and so save a little bit of battery. Not sure yet. There is undoubtedly less contrast between black areas and white areas though!

Just ordered the Tab X...was such a hard choice to make between that and the Tab Ultra C. Went for size over color. I think the size will be nice to have.

Colors look better than my little Boox Poke2 color, I'm really wanting a bigger display and torn between this 10 inch and the smaller 8 inch color eink devices. The only thing that makes me hesitant is that Boox generally does not provide any software updates! My little Poke2 color has been on the same firmware since I bought it a few months after it was available in the USA. Granted it does work for what you would expect (reading books), but eventually there are security problems.

I think Boox is on route for some kind of a clash with the big guns such as Apple or Google etc... especially as physical e-ink screens get better and faster. Apple are pretty expensive so they might compete for a while but Google could be the killer that under cuts them all. On the other hand, maybe one of them will just buy Boox out. :O The Supernote isn't cheap, at least here in the UK but they seem to be setting a different course so maybe will find away to navigate the storm Boox appears hell bent on entering. Great video kit, appreciated, and it would be nice to hear where you think each platform is heading, surely they can't all be fighting for the same customer base... can they? I write and study allot and currently find Supernote suits that best, where I plan out projects and find that the _'very act of writing'_ not only inspires thought but fuels the creative process whereas with a computer, I just end up with so much information gathered from the internet and other apps that the whole thing falls apart leaving me frustrated and burnt out.

Just got my tab ultra c, battery is not great at all but I think will be fine I will unfortunately have to charge it every night if I have a heavy workflow that day, I may return the keyboard once I get the folio case, the writing experience is great as long as it is not in the keyboard case, I think just like remarkable, you have issues with the magnets in the case interfering with the writing, I was really hopeful the scanner would be at least good but it just doesn't work for me, I will still have to use my phone to scan documents

Yeah, correct, I'll discuss battery in my full review, but basically it's "if you use it like an iPad you'll get iPad battery performance!"

Interesting about the document scanner, have you tried using a third party app? Maybe Google lens might work better?

I heard the screen is pretty flimsy. Is the keyboard case enough protection for normal use like carrying it in a bag? Also, have you tried exposing the ereader to the sun for an extended period of time? Standard eink tends to turn yellow, but color eink might preserve the color better.

My ultra C fails to register the first half of any stroke after changing the pen. I'm tripping over bugs throughout the software. I thought they'd have worked out the bugs, since most of the software has been running for a year on the B&W model.

Yeah, there are undoubtedly a few bugs. The first stroke thing is weird, but I've sort of got hard to it, and I think it'll be sorted in an update. They change the software a lot to add features that users request, so I kind of forgive them occasional bugs. I don't think they run a beta testing program before rolling updates out to all and this could help them. 🙂

Hi Kitt! So my wife has given me free reign to get whatever tablet I’d like as a birthday/grad school present. I was pretty dead set on an iPad or a Samsung Galaxy, as that’s what I’ve used before. However, I found your videos and now I’m questioning myself a bit, as I’d never considered an e-ink tablet before. I’d primarily be using the tablet for taking notes by hand during synchronous online classes, downloading and annotating PDFs for literature reviews, potentially managing my calendar, and cycling between various consulting project plans/tasks. Any thoughts?

For me the Tab Ultra C is better for missed use cases like that. If you were likely to be more that 80% of the time reading I could maybe recommend the scribe.

@@KitBetts-Masters The two issues with Tab Ultra C are :- 1. It is a bit heavier. Not comfortable in reading holding in hands. 2. The writing is not paper like feel. (as I have read the comments/ reviews). And also it’s surface is not as bright as Kindle scribe. It’s a little grayish.

Hit Kit. Are you having issues using Outlook with the keyboard case? I just received my unit a couple of days ago. I can’t get basic auto correct functions to work properly, such as auto capitalizing at the beginning of a sentence or the “I”. I also had an issue where it said that it sent an email out, as it was in the sent box. But it did not go out for several hours. Any such issues on your end? Thanks.

Not great TBH, most third party drawing apps will not work well unless specifically designed for e-ink.

Hello, it's using an app called spacedesk, you install it on tablet and on the client computer, then it's just recognised as a monitor!

If all you do is write email and type documents or excel spreadsheet, then yes, it is a good replacement for a laptop. Until you consider that a 100 dollars chromebook does almost everything better, and the color screen is like night and day. Sure; wont work great in direct sunlight as an eink display, but it is 600 dollars cheaper. Is working outdoor in direct sunlight instead than in the shade, worth 600 dollars? Up for debate :) As e-reader it is too expensive, heavy and bulky; as the note air 2 is way better and cost a fraction of this nowadays. So the Tab Ultra are mostly a niche product in a niche segment; almost as if this tablet is targeting the "apple users" of the eink world basically

Yeah, I was pleased with how well it was controlled though, I think it looks worse on camera TBH. Funnily enough, I could cheat and stick a circular polarising filter on the lens and we'd all think it looked amazing. It's very difficult to give you a close to real world look at these screens. This is why I wish they were in more shops!
