The Supernote Nomad was my first e-ink tablet, and I am obsessed with it. I use it for everything from work notes, personal to-dos, journaling, reading, etc. it’s a fantastic size. I only occasionally wish I had a bigger screen but you can’t beat that portability.

I've just discovered these devices today and am thinking that an e-ink tablet (the Boox Note Max in particular) may be perfect for my use case. I"m a musician (a drummer) and often need to have sheet music + hand written notes printed in a binder that I can read on a music stand. It would be amazing if I could scan the sheet music I needed for a show, create an "e-book" for that particular show, and easily be able to find the page with the music/notes for a song within seconds and read from the tablet rather than having to bring printed music in a binder. The fact that this a the size of a standard sheet of paper, is great so I can read from it at a distance and, it "looks like" the screen is "anti glare", which would be important to me because of stage lighting. I'm guessing I would use OneNote for this (so that I can manage the "notebooks" on my computer). But as I've said, I'm just discovering this technology now, so leaving this comment here in case someone has an opinion on this. Great informative videos. I've watched a few of them now. - ty

Totally agree with his number 1 choice, I couldn't wait for the Manta release so went with the Supernote Nomad. Great little device for carrying about everywhere, and the best notebook functionality of the 3 main systems. I then needed something bigger than the Nomad for study book annotation and as the Manta was still not released, I went with the RMPP. Sizewise, it is a great compromise between the Supernote Manta and the Boox Max and my experience of it has been positive overall. If I am still studying when the Supernote 13.3 in comes out, I will go for it with no hesitation.

Thanks for your videos, Organizing for Change. Curious if you’ve tested the Calendar on the Viwoods. I’m tempted to get the AiPaper because the calendar layout seems more useful than the Manta from the reviews I’ve seen and it also has Outlook integration after the latest update. My biggest disappointment with Boox is the lack of external calendar integration in their calendar app.

@@tmac2705 unfortunately, I don't have any other writing device but the A5X and the Manta. I have a Mobiscribe Wave that I use as a universal reader. I know that the Supernote Calendar integration is very good on Google and I've heard on Outlook. The main drawback is that it doesn't allow multiple calendars. I have some videos on the Calendar and now you can snap straight lines on it in the Beta.

Kitt, honestly my favorite video so far. You sold me at the end saying you can't objectively say one of these on the top 10 is better than the other, thats super fair. I also entirely agree with the entire list and I try to stay pretty objective. Super hard to not make the max and go share #2 spot, and the RM Pro is just hard to slot, because its so fucking good, but so lacking in functionality, but you cant be upset because that lack of functionality and reductionism is literally its selling point. Since getting my boox Go 10.3 my RM pro has been collecting dust except for nighttime use, and when I use it I feel like crap I want the functionality during PDFs, like highlighting a word to google search it quick, or toss a paragraph to AI, and cant....so I pulled the trigger on the Air 4C and i'm honestly thinking my RM pro just wont have any use at all...But i cannot bring myself to sell it..ill Literally pick it up just to doodle on it to feel the amazing writing experience (i can only draw stick figures...) and its so satisfying...Havn't touched it in two weeks except to just pick it up to feel satisfied from the writing feel haha...they just nailed the writing down soo,soo well that man..Curious how the Air 4c writing feel is going to be..

I had a Boox 10.3 and switched to Remarkable Paper Pro. The color does the trick when writing and highlighting e-books, so it's much easier to take notes on Remarkable. The highlighting is also very helpful there. Despite the very extensive functions in Boox, this system and interface look a bit childish. However, there are great experiences in Boox when reading epub or pdf. However, the lack of a highlighter color in books is terribly depressing. In my opinion, it's a good idea to create a Max version of Boox, if someone prefers to take notes in A4 instead of A5, this is the perfect solution. Only the lack of highlighting color and the lack of highlighting are tiring in the long run. Also, the light from the lamp reflects more strongly on Boox than on Remarkable and you have to play around with the angles more carefully so that everything is legible and doesn't reflect light. Remarkable Paper Pro is very intuitive, fewer functions in the menu, but that's good because I couldn't remember what's where and what to press in Boox. I wasted a lot of time searching the menu/interface.

Yes, I wasn't expecting to like the RMPP as much as I do. Sure, it has it's limitations but I do enjoy the simple approach to PDF annotation. I found the Boox system very powerful but overly complicated for casual use and not that intuitive. The Supernote software is a solid compromise between the simplicity of the Remarkable and the complexity of the Boox. In fairness though, all 3 systems have good things going for them... I hope I am never forced to pick just one of them!

If he changed the appearance of the system a bit to make it more fancy, it would be the perfect e-ink. Well, then it would clash with Boox Note Air 4c, so we probably won't see it. However, if someone has more money, it is worth having both Remarkable Paper Pro and Boox Note Max. I haven't tested SuperNote but it's too small for me.

I have the Boox Go 10.3, and for taking notes I‘m quite pleased with it. However, I find reading in the Kindle and Readwise Reader app not very pleasant. I tend to use my iPad for that. Is there a way to improve the text quality on the Boox for apps? I have fiddled around with the e-ink center… but haven‘t found the „right“ settings yet.

Which ones store your notes in an open file format that you can take forward with you over the decades to other platforms as well as to future versions of their own platforms? Think of the paper notebooks you can take off the shelf from when you were younger and remind yourself of old ideas and projects. We mustn't lose that long context window in the transition to e-ink/e-paper.

It seems that soon there will be a new challenger in town - HyRead Gaze Pro X (from Taiwan). 10.3 inch Carta 1300 Screen with 300 DPI, Android 14, front light, 8 MP camera and bigger battery than Onyx Boox Go 10.3. No info about international release though. Seems interesting.

I can't agree about Supernote Manta having the best writing feel. If you are used to writing with a heavy hand with a ball point pen, maybe. But if you are used to writing with a fountain pen the Boox devices are more sensitive to light writing, and have smoother line rendering. I picked up a Manta after all the "best writing feel" mentioned in reviews and was stunned - the screen is literally sticky, yet when writing there's an odd pebbled feel to the surface and the pen slides all over the place until you are pressing moderately hard. The line rendering, even with anti-aliasing on, is not as smooth. Writing on the Supernote neither feels nor looks as good as on Boox, IMO. I was quite disappointed. Caveat emptor.

The color screen being used by boox is terrible. The filter blocks 33% of the light going in and coming out, meaning over 66% of the reflected light is lost. This forces the use of the built in light at 100% using the larger size color screen would use more power than an oled screen. Just buy an oled tablet that supports a pen.

Now I'm thinking of a second device at some time but the big question for me is transferability of notes and annotated pdf's. Great content! First time seeing your channel. I would appreciate if you could spare some time to answer a question I have in mind. Which E-Ink tablet would you recommend to an individual who primarily uses it for reading books without the need for note-taking? Two factors to consider are a large screen and faster processing (specifically, faster loading of pages as I don’t enjoy the Kindle Paperwhite which I currently have). I understand E-Ink tablets cannot be compared to normal LCD or LED screens but I hope you get my point.

Great video as always. You convinced me to get the Boox 10.3 last month, and I’m loving it-no regrets! 😎 The screen, reading experience, battery life, and syncing with Google and MS are all fantastic -- especially for the price. But I’m starting to hit a few roadblocks: Storage is filling up faster than expected. Organization could be smoother. The linking and navigating between notes feels a bit clunky. I like the 10.3" size, but I’m considering the A6 instead. I spent the day in split-screen and found the smaller window sufficient. I mainly use my tablet for note-taking and reading, with access to my notes on my phone and computer. Would the Supernote A6 X2 Nomad be a better fit for me? Or is there something else that might be even better?

In my own personal research, I would have to concur with your list. I now use the top 2 in my work and home life. Each distinct in their service but really liking the Manta. I can’t enjoy the software without getting past the hardware. The Manta felt great out of the box. I didn’t feel like I needed to handle it gingerly like the rM2. The exclusive Lamy pen feels great in the hand and due to its light weight, felt less fatigued. The combination of the ceramic pen and notepad feel to screen makes the technology aspect forgettable and clearly invites you to start writing! And the one hardware feature that closed the deal was its future expandability / replaceability in processor, memory, and battery. E-ink tablets in general should be in everyone’s backpack and briefcase for distraction free writing at a moment’s notice.

The Supernote Manta would have been my number one device if Ratta had supported other languages. It's a great device if you think and speak in English. So I had to decide on the Note Max. Which by the way, measures 24.5 cm wide, the same as my 15.6 inch laptop. And almost 29 cm long, about 8 cm less than my laptop. When I travel with the Note Max, in addition to its original case, I put it in its original box, this way it does not move when I carry it in the dedicated laptop pocket in my backpack. But then I can't carry both things at the same time, the laptop and the Note Max. Regards Note: I like the work you do, it helps to decide to buy one of these devices, because as you say, whenever you choose one, it doesn't matter what it is, you have to make sacrifices. That's why you emphasize use cases so much. And I appreciate it. Thanks

When it comes to handwriting recognition, Supernote supports dozens of languages. It's just the system that's limited to EN, JP, and CN. I don't know your specific use case, but I believe you can easily use Manta for writing in a number of languages. Note Max seems like a great choice too, though, don't get me wrong.

@@tlk889 That's something I can't understand. It has letter recognition in more than 60 languages, however it does not have a virtual or physical keyboard in those languages. If you want to correct handwriting recognition, or name a document, you cannot use the symbols of your language, in my case, the accented words, the umlaut, (example: á, ü or the letter "ñ"). Boox, for example, has poorly translated menus, even if you select another language, most of the menus are still in English. But it is a minor problem because you have data entry in your chosen language. Regards

Interesting comparisons. I have the RM 2 and Boox Go 10.3, my immediate is to look at the 8" size screen for reading with writing as an option. Maybe the AIpaper mini or the SN Nomad are good options. What I would love to see a standard where handwriting is recognized across devices. For a color I still prefer the Apple family with Ipad Air or Pro as the app ecosystem is much better. The RM 2 maybe limited in features but it does simple really well. So much easier to just add a document, sign then download. Also the ability to combine text with handwriting is another plus.

@ I feel the RM2 is a better option for note taking and organizing content. RM2 allows for keeping books and notes the same folders and have a great tagging system. Boox is a bit clumsy with that. Yes, it has the ability to install apps and change settings but seems too distracting to do all that; I am speaking as an engineer.

On the Tab-X leaving because of the Note max, I would concur because that's what I've done for my work use-case. The Note Max is my first no-light tablet and it did worry me. I was quite disappointed when I unboxed it. However, just getting to work in a room with very poor lighting, I forget about it and it wasn't an issue. Then spent a couple of evenings reading on the Kindle app, poor lighting once again, but what do you know it didn't worry me. The contrast on the screen is excellent. The black is so dark. I didn't think the 207 ppi on the old Tab-X was an issue, until I got the Note Max. So if anyone was consider a Tab-X, just get the Note Max. I'm about to lend my Note Air 4 C to a colleague who is after a color e-ink tablet. She has a reMarkable 2, loves it and uses a lot for productivity. What I haven't asked her is why not the Paper Pro? Gallery 3 shouldn't be a shock to a long time e-ink user.

Quality video all round. Any update on the ghosting on the note max that people were seeing? One thing I liked about the remarkable pro was hardware-wise it could handle a lot of zooming in and out on notes for very detailed mind maps, though it was let down by the touch controls which were so unreliable. Any possibility for zooming in and out on boox notes?

In fact I'm going to release the video really soon about using the new margins feature on boox software 4.0 which allows you to essentially have an infinite zoom. And honestly the ghosting isn't something that's really putting me or seemingly a lot of other users off at this point!

Hi, thanks so much for these videos, I have been watching a lot recently and find them really helpful. I switched from the Manta to the Boox Go 10.3 due to ease of syncing files and better quality of the notes when viewing on PC. I did love the Manta but those things were limiting for me. I would like another, smaller device which still uses a pen, and maybe has a frontlight. Just wondering if there are any front-lit e-ink tablets which are not super dark when the light is off? I bought an air 4c at the same time as my Go 10.3 to compare, and while frontlights are sometimes really useful, I love being able to just leave my tablet out to take notes as needed rather than feeling like the battery will run out on me.

Certainly agree with your top 2 choices, but don't agree with your other placings. I would have: (3) RMPP (colour, great size for PDF annotation), (4) Supernote Nomad (ideal "carry around" size, brilliant notes system), (5) Note 4C (good all-round colour device) and (6) Go 10.3 (over-rated IMO). Don't really care about the other lower placings...

Thanks a lot for your detailed analysis. I own a RPP and still in the 100-day trial, I tried a Boox note max which I already returned and I'm waiting for the SN A5X2 to be delivered. I really like the minimalist approach, the size and colour option of the RPP but for my job (lawyer) and studies (WSET Diploma) it lacks some essential features offered by SN. Boox offers everything in terms of software and, in my view, a messy/buggy software and an unreliable post-sale support (my iPad Pro 13 inch is better at everything). Therefore I'm leaning towards the SN as I need its system of references, links and headers. It is great but not perfect, I would have preferred a SN with the bigger screen and front light of the RPP and the split screen option of the Note max (this is however in the road map). Any thought on the SN manta screen size in comparison with RPP and its lack of a front light? As to the final list, the RPP, in my view, should be ranked as 3rd: gallery 3 colour, front light and screen size (bigger than 10.3 but still portable if compared to 13.3) are 3 factors representing a unique, as of now, proposition in the market of e-ink device and should not be underestimated. Can you expand on this?

Hiya, thanks so much for the comment and interesting discussion. The thing which will really blow you away with the manta is the writing feel! If that's a priority you won't miss the extra size in my opinion. I think if you've found that the rM pro was a nice experience, but it just didn't quite have enough features for everything you needed then supernote is certainly a nice balance. I don't disagree with your point about the ranking, it was certainly very close between them all, I'd say that the way I compared the three brands in Note Taking, Reading and Writing and Other, in my last live stream probably shows why I put it behind the Boox 10.3 devices, (Go, Note Air and Tab Ultra,) because it just doesn't win at any of those categories! Great tablet though and I think you make a solid point about the gallery 3, but for core eink tasks, the loss of resolution, and contrast, (and I don't like that flashing,) is really not a trade off I'd recommend for most people! Yeah although I did run my Note Air 3C exclusively without the light on for a week or so to see how that worked, and I did find that more often than not it was quite doable! You just have to be a bit more conscious of the lighting conditions and how you orientating the device.

I have been holding on from buying A4C due to lack of a lappable keyboard, unsure which other similar device would serve the purpose of both a fully functional colored eink tablet and a laptop.Also, Don't want to go above 10/11 inch to preserve the tablet experience...Daylight DC1 comes close but no color option so hoping a 3rd party will make a magic/ lappable keyboard either for A4C or for manta soon...

Boox note air 4c being ranked higher than Viwoods AI paper is a joke. The screen, battery life, wifi performance, terrible operating systems, heavy brick feel are all inferior to the Viwoods. I listened to your reviews and returned the Viwoods. I regretted it as soon as I received the Boox device. Boox told me that they will charge me $42 to return the 4c. I gladly paid that to get rid of it. I have repurchased the Viwoods and am really happy with it.

because you can use any app on an Eink doesn't mean you should, and since apps on any of these devices is a horrible experience it should not be a plus

Absolutely! But the ability to install other apps allows you to integrate with other systems that you might use in your wider work ecosystem and so I do think it's an important positive for many users.

This is for sheet music, PDF reading, notetaking and, depending on which one I get, work (Note Max keyboard case).
