How to use a mini cling film wrapper without going insane

Cling film is a great alternative to tape for wrapping stuff up. These little mini cling film wrappers are infinitely useful for a whole load of different jobs - from bundling up furniture to wrapping the contents of crates etc. Much easier to use than tape. In this little tips video I'll show you how to use one.

Andy, been using this suff to wrap up all manor of stuff on my van for well over 15 years, started using it on a very big house move back in 2005 and ordered a giant box of 50 rolls to wrap up carpet ends, bundles of curtains and every small item that needed to stay in place like like loose mounting brackets . I now keep 3 rolls on my van all the time, great for wrapping timber lengths and mouldings to stop them moving and to keep their shape if left outside for any time.

Never used the handle but keeping under tension is the key. Working on warehouses, I'm used to do it with hands. I usually put the loose end between the things being wrapped initially so you don't have to hold it (funny I had to teach this professional house movers here in Ireland). Btw the main reason for using wrapping machines at the warehouse is wrapping film saving because human can't keep such tension as the machine. Saving is huge. That actually means that you don't really care about the tension, as much as you can apply will still be fine.

Really enjoy your content thank you. I keep a cling film in my painting kit for use on things like doorknobs, smoke detectors, thermostats and shower spouts etc where painters tape is just too awkward.

Thank you, that was a really useful video. On the subject of house-moving questions, how do you determine which excess materials get moved with you, which to sell and what to bin? I've got loads of mid-sized off cuts from jobs where it was cheaper to buy in bulk. The cost of removals is ridiculous, so it'd be great to reduce the volume of workshop materials going along. However, you just know that you'll need that one little bit of something at the new place for a quick repair.

This is very useful. Thanks for showing. I use 45 cm or even wider strech tape (without a holder) and that just doesn't work. The foil is there but it just stops things falling out or falling apart. This is handier. I'll have to look around if I can find it here.

They're great - good luck finding them! In the States they seem to come with a cardboard handle and in the UK it's a plastic dispenser, for whatever reason. 😃

I've had a Handiwrap from Axminster for years. If I am storing a rarely used tool, which can rust..... I cover it with rust inhibitors. - oil/WD-40 and wrap it to cling wrap to maintain the protection

It's incredibly thin so probably a better alternative to bubblewrap, tape etc. 👍👊

Did you move to a rental property to be more flexible to buy your next property? I've noticed it's quite hard (near impossible) to find a property, sell your own and put in an offer before that property is sold, as well as finding another property in reasonable time after receiving an offer here in England due to the way the market works and buyers/sellers can pull out in the last second.

Yup. We always prefer to move to an interim property if at all possible. We've lived with the wife's parents over the years and all sorts. Moving in a chain is a nightmare. 👍😃

The rolls and handles are different in the US and I haven’t had any problems with them. The roll doesn’t spin on the handle you allow the handle to spin in your hand a bit. So you don’t have all the pressure on one finger it’s spread out over your hand. Check out uline.com number S-12790

Hi Andy. This is a really good idea. Do you use the wider " pallet" rolls as well. I found these on Amazon with a much better looking handle ( about £30) which looked as if it would provide the tensioning without risking blisters on your thumb! Mike

Gosforth Handyman Hi Andy, Don't be afraid of the wider rolls. I have been using 300M rolls about 550mm wide to wrap a lot of IKEA kitchen cupboards ( knocked down) and other stuff and it works really well. I couldn't get the handle for it here ( Cyprus) so just used the rolls on their own. For the flat pack stuff I stood the stack of pieces ( 2-4 depending on weight) on a carpet and the rolled the cling around it in sections pulling tight at each " turn". For the drawer runners and other smaller pieces I put the roll on the floor against a wall and turned the bundle holding the film tight by putting my foot on the roll. Worked all this out after a few false starts and found it to be fairly easy. The film was quite cheap here at about £8 a roll from a warehouse that used it to wrap pallets. Much less than on Amazon. Great idea for which we are very grateful. WKR Mike

Plz reply to the following pointwise: 1. Cling film and stretch film are basically same things and we can use any of them right? 2. They are only one time usable right?after unpacking you can't use them again... 3. For packing larger objects we sometimes kind of neccesarily need two persons one to hold the object in air and other to wrap film around it right (so as to mantain the tension)? 4. What is the use of wrapper/holder...what if we straightaway use the role..?..I mean the wrapper makes our task easy only for small objects and not for bigger objects right? 5. The wrapper you used seems to fit a roll of about 6 inches wide...what about bigger roles like 12'' or 18" . Are wrappers available for them also? 6. The roll that you used has protruding tubes at either end due to which it is bigger in diameter on one side than other , whereas one that I brought (18'') doesn't have protruding ends and thus same diametre of roll on either ends...so how will that fit on roller/wrapper...or is it that for roller to be fit on it, I have to necessarily buy the one with protruding ends..?

Had a look at theirs today, they are about half the size of the one in the video and don't seem to turn easy on the handle. Reason I was looking was I had the idea of using this stuff to wrap paintbrushes in-between coats rather than use a full width cling film, the Poundland one looked a bit small for that idea.

@@GosforthHandyman Tupperware.... Seriously though, when future generations look back at ours - from behind the landfills we've left them - they'll wonder what the hell we were thinking. They'll hate us. The worst part is that we're doing it knowingly (I've got one of these wrappers too). I suppose less stuff would nullify most of the problem. I have some amount of crap in my house if I ever move. If I only had a few things, then I could make little spacer templates ( 3 x ply templates with a couple of holes to fit the poles and some mortices for the stretchers would suit your example) and it wouldn't take too long. For all the crap I have, it'd take longer to make templates than to move house.

Do it the way it was done before plastic wrap or adhesive tape existed. Or think of a different, creative and innovative way that does not require plastic. It's all about the (small) choices you make in everyday life. There is only one planet Earth, please let's take better care of it instead of polluting it. It's just a choice you make as a human being and as part of nature.

Plastic wrap is only about 0.01mm thick. So in terms of volume of plastic there are much bigger problems in the world. Certainly better than tape. 👍

Just airing an opinion, and it’s all the little problems that cause the big ones regardless what’s going on in the world, it might be 0.01 mm thick but how many hundreds of metres did you use for this move and your previous move, I’m not having a go at you honestly but I would just think what you encourage people to do on you channel, which I have only just found but am finding interesting.
