GOSLINGS TAKE A LEAP OF FAITH & JUMP OFF NEST! 🐥 🐥🐥🐥🐥🐥 ~ Decorah Eagles 4.28.22

All five goslings have taken a huge leap of faith today and have jumped off the nest to the ground below! It was amazing & heart pounding action to see each gosling jump or tumble from the nest in a sheer act of bravery and courage. Mother Goose leaves the nest and one by one, we see the goslings jump to the ground. The youngest was last on the nest and was afraid to jump. It went back & forth all over the nest for a long time before it finally was able to jump off. It was a nail bitter for us watching live!! When #5 jumped we all cheered!!!
RRP has given a ground report that three goslings went right to the parents and headed to the pond. One gosling went the wrong way and Dave scooped it up and reunited with family. Mom and Dad will care for the goslings now on the ground. They are searching for the youngest #5. Thank you all for watching this exciting coverage!

New UPDATE From Raptor Resource Project April 28th 2022 ~ The goslings jumped today! We'll have video tomorrow, but for now, we know that: 1) Four of five goslings survived and were last seen swimming happily in Trout Creek, foraging along the bank, and following their parents up and down the small pool below the nest. 2) One of the four went the wrong way after jumping! We managed to reunite it with its family after some mad scrambling through the brush, a low crawl across the river bank, and a little rock jumping. This gosling seemed determined to stay with new Papa David Kester: it took two tries to get it back where it belonged! 3) One gosling died. We initially thought it might have been the last to jump, since it was younger and smaller than its siblings and took a while to follow them out of the nest. But the gosling we reunited with its family was smaller than the one we found dead. We suspect (but don't know for sure), that the reunited gosling was the last gosling, and the gosling that died was gosling number two. One, three, and four joined their parents quickly, but we don't think we saw two after it jumped. We look forward to sharing more with you tomorrow and we hope you enjoyed watching the geese as much as we did! ***RIP #2 - you captured all our hearts with your bravery and fearlessness! That is so sad. The littlest one appeared very afraid, and presumably the parent and siblings had long since left by the time it got to the ground, assuming it did eventually get down. I will be most interested to find out how the fifth gosling died. RIP tiny fluffball.

All I can say is it is a wonder even four survived that 70 foot jump. We can all celebrate their survival and mourn the loss of the last little one who seemed so afraid to take the leap and got unlucky. Definitely stole our hearts and will not be forgotten. 💕

There was no timestamp on this, so I was curious as to how long it took from when Mother goose left the nest for them all to take that leap of faith! When I first saw these jumping from a cliff extremely high 😳 on a footage I couldn't believe they survived. Now I see these and its definitely amazing. Mom calls. Such brave little ones. Almost oops. No pushing now. They all kinds of confused. Come on kids. Take the plunge. 🤯🤯

I had been watching things unfold all morning but admit I had to step away when "Littles" was the last gosling and in distress. As I left home I said a silent prayer, sent love, and then redirected my energy to the four who had already jumped. A while later, I checked in via my phone and saw your posted a video about all of them jumping. I was thrilled at the news but then learned that #5 didn't survive. As sad as it is, I'm comforted by the fact that it found the courage to take that leap of faith. Jumping was its only shot at survival which means it's now flying free with a badge of bravery. What we witness can be difficult at times but, with every sad outcome, there are always miracles to be found.💞

That must be terrifying 😳. Poor babies are so small still. I never knew this was how they left their nests. I'm guessing that was Mom and/ or Dad coaching them down. Maybe the little sparrow gave it some encouragement. I hope the young one gets found or finds it's ways ❤️ Thank you for sharing LH.

How high is that nest? Maybe it's deceiving but it looks to be well up in a tree. We have a goose sitting on five eggs right now but the nest is at ground level against a lake. These are brave little guys for sure. Hope they landed softly.

The goslings survive a 70' fall to the ground or do they fall into the pond or river? It's amazing if they bounce off branches and fall 70' to the hard ground and can still survive.

Never saw 4 gosling. Only 3. Other comments also only say 3. First gosling only one to jump head first like mom. 2 and 3 kept getting close for long time but tumbled off. #4. Kept going to tiny one day old #5 incoraging it to get up and follow her. Then #4 tumbled off. #5 was frantic for over hour alone and feared the 7 story drop to rocks scattered below. Finally it got nerve to get too close and tumbled ..getting hit with stick limb a foot down.. upside down foot seen in an instant then camera immediately shut off. Not allowing us to see its fate. I think only 3 made it. Until I see video of 4 with mom I will believe that...and an arborist could have climbed up to rescue the last 2 instead of a body search. 😥

They have the yolk retained in their stomachs. They can easily survive on just that for three days. That's why chicks can be shipped from hatcheries to their destinations within three days. They have all they need in their tummies.
