I think he was giving homage to Gene Krupa when he played the extended snare part… AND to Lionel Hampton with the xylophone parts. Definitely paid homage to Buddy Rich at the end… and did so in a way Buddy would have appreciated

The dryers were a joke. Rush has been touring since 1970's. At one point, Geddy Lee, the lead singer, bass, keyboards and peddles decided to get rid of his amp stacks and run his sound through the house speakers. The lead guitarist, backing vocals, foot pedals and keyboards, so had his giant stack behind him. Geddy didn't want a big nothing behind him so he started having the stage hands put dryers, popcorn machines, rotisserie chicken ovens etc... behind his side of the stage. Geddy and Alex were best friends from highschool and loved to have a good time. Over a 40 year career, they never forgot their friendship and loved to have fun teasing each other.

Thanks. I never knew the origin of that. But through reading Neil Pearts books knew that having guests come on stage to 'put quarters' in to run the washing machines became a part of the show. After watching this video I was about to google how that started. Not sure if it is out there, although I suspect it is, google rush washing machines and jack black. In the last book I just finished, it sounded like a great moment.

THere's always some interesting things hiding in there. ONE thing I don't know about was a SESAME STREET kinda thing. Albums always had a 'brought to you by' a couple of letters or numbers. I don't know the story behind that.

So Neil Peart noticed that the drummer for journey had improved his drumming, so 20 years into his career, the band took a year off because Neil wanted to relearn how to drum. He took lessons from the danger drum teacher as Journey's drummer. There's a whole 1.5 hour video with Neil Peart taking about how he relearned his craft and the drum layout is one of those changes. Yes, you did recognize Buddy Rich. Neil studied Buddy Rich and did a while tribute concert of Buddy Rich music. He also spent a year riding his bike across Africa listening to local rhythms and integrated them into his playing.

Freddie Gruber - he was the teacher. Steve Smith used him and Neil saw Steve at the Burning For Buddy concerts and asked Steve who he’d been studying with and Steve say “Freddie”, then Neil did the same. It definitely loosened his style and expanded his influences, probably extended his career to play what he did as long as he did. Yes, he triggers the jazz horn samples.

After Freddy he took more lessons from Jazz great Peter Erskine , Peter would have Neil use for example the high hat day after day and develop all the tones and sounds he could from just that one high hat

A friend of mine, a big jazz fan, who was in his 70's at the time, went to the Buddy Rich tribute at Carnegie Hall. He came back asking me "who the hell is this guy Neil Peart?" He was too old school jazz to get into Rush, but he was blown away by his solo in the concert.

Like you, I am also an African-American and (now part-time) Gospel drummer. Unlike you, I think I am probably 20 years older and I got seriously into Neil and Rush when I was about 14, so it's been north of 35 years. I am SO GLAD that you did that, got to experience this and enjoyed it as much as you did. Your reactions were spot on. He IS in the circular pattern family--derived from Steve Smith by way of their teacher Freddie Gruber. The solo IS in fact in specific pieces and arranged as an actual song. He WAS very influenced by Buddy and spearheaded two multi-drummer tribute albums to him. You couldn't have been more on point. As far as your later statement of, feeling inspired to practice, I have to say this...In many of the churches I've played in I'd get compliments about how 'good' I am. In reality, what I really am is, as I'd describe it, "solidly competent", nothing more. The reason I believe so many of them see it differently is really because I grew up playing with such a Neil-based perspective as well as so deeply in the church. Therefore, I tend to 'hear' and construct drum parts slightly differently than folks would typically expect. The same is probably true for the many rock bands I've been in. I think you'd really love listening to Neil's song work even more. For greater accessibility (sorry old school Rush fans), I'd recommend any album 1980 (Permanent Waves) or later (except Test For Echo) to start.

I was gonna mention Gruber, yeah ..good stuff. And oddly enough it was prior to Test for Echo that he studied with Gruber, and even took on traditional grip during that period. Test for Echo is an *incredible* album, with absolutely chilling songs ..but maybe is better suited for after someone's taken in the 'core' Rush sound

Neil's solos were on another level for sure, but I think any drummer would truly appreciate his work on the entire Rush catalog. He tried to challenge himself on every song, and he managed it without detracting from the song, itself. His drumming in each song will impress. I'm not a drummer, myself, but even the way he simply varied the basic drum part on Tom Sawyer always impresses me.

Neil Peart was no joke when he played. He was a Drummer of drummers. RIP Neil. One of my most fave drummers of all time. I listened to RUSH since the 1970's. KISS was another one of my fave bands too. Him And Peter Criss of KISS were the first 2 Drummers I looked up to since I was a kid. They were the reason why I got hooked on drums and picked up the sticks and taught myself to play. I was 9 years old. I'm now a 54 year old grown woman and still look up to them. You also gotta check out the late Eric Carr. The 2nd drummer from KISS. check out his live drum solo from the late 1980's early 1990's. another great drummer.

The kit was made of 10,000 year old trees they found in a swamp, and they are covered in 24KT gold, cost somewhere near $80,00 per kit, and he always had 2., and took up to 2.5hrs to set up. He only had one tech, and he had to put the kit together by memory, every time.. Most awesome! KBT Drummer, you have a nice percussion knowledge. Thank you..

an absolute legend. may he RIP. thats about to be my transition. i am selling my ekit and going back to the very basics and starting slow then im going to reward myself with an acoustic kit after I see an honest improvement. I started drums on a logitech kit that was made for gaming consoles and had such a blast I bought an ekit. its been a lot of fun for a couple years on and off but playing along to songs can only get you so far, even though its incredibly fun and rewarding. I have learned a lot just but learning songs I enjoy but I have A LOT to learn and I look forward to starting from scratch. anyway who cares really, that was quite a mouthful.. It shows very much that he studied everything and to learn he retrained everything he knew is inspiring and somewhat of a relief.

i can't say enough about this solo man. Neil, last name pronounced Peert, is just a genius at work. He is the father of progressive drumming, I have been playing for years and I STILL have not caught up with this guy. As EVH was destined to be a guitar player, Neil was destined to be a great drummer. He is what you get when you want to listen to a true master of his instrument. The Drum Master- (circa 1994) Drumming has the power to unite people, no matter how varied their language or cultural background might be. On a recent trek through Africa, Neil Peart had a singular experience that proved just that. "I was in Gambia, walking through a small village, and I heard the sound of a drum. So of course I was curious! I looked into a compound and I could hear the drumming coming from a curtained room. I walked up to a woman doing laundry in front of the room. She could see my interest in the sound, so she waved me to go in. Inside I found a young, white missionary from a nearby Catholic school. Sitting across from him was the commanding presence of the local drum master. He was attempting to show the missionary how to play any kind of beat. The missionary was trying as hard as he could, but he wasn't having a lot of success." After a time the drum master, frustrated by the missionary's lack of ability, noticed the other man who had come into the room. The master had no idea who this person was, but he thought to himself, "Why not see if he can play?" According to Peart, what happened next was fascinating. "The drum master gestured to me to try and play a rhythm. So we began playing together, and he started smiling because he could tell I had a rhythm - maybe not his rhythm, but a rhythm of some kind. We were playing and playing, building the intensity, and little kids started coming in, laughing at the white man playing drums. Then a few women came into the room, and everybody began dancing to our beat! The master and I even started trading fours. It wasn't a spoken thing, but he could tell that I would lay out and listen to what he was doing for a certain amount of time, and then he would do the same. It was just a magical moment." When they finished, a confused and startled missionary ran up to Peart and asked, "How can you do that?" Chuckling to himself, Neil politely responded, "I'm in the business." World Inspiration Neil's love of bicycling and travel is well known - it's almost the stuff of legend. While on tour with Rush he's been known to avoid the tour bus and bike to the next town and venue. When not on the road with Rush, he has taken his bike to the four corners of the globe, including Europe, mainland China, and Africa. Upon entering Peart's Toronto home, one is immediately struck by the fact that this man has seen and experienced locales most people can't imagine. "Here's a prized possession of mine," he says proudly, showing a raw-metal sculpture standing about ten inches high and resembling a tribal version of Rodin's "The Thinker." "It's from Africa. It weighs about twenty pounds, and I had to carry it a hundred miles on my bike. but it was worth it." Neil's passion for authentic African art is obvious. Unique drums, with their rich, hand-carved elegance, are displayed in his home with reverence. Original Chinese gongs decorate a few of the walls. The decor hints at the fact that a drummer lives in the house, shouts at the fact that a word traveler resides there. Peart's love of travel is obvious, but does actually going to other parts of the world inspire him musically? "First of all, I think travel is very important for any person," he insists. "It's affected me enormously, and I'm sure it filters down to my work. Africa is not an abstraction to me anymore - neither is China. They're places I've experienced, places where I've met people, made friends - and just broadened my thinking. "I've written lyrics that were directly influenced by my travels abroad. In a drumming sense, I've had some interesting experiences in different countries, experiences that may not directly affect the way I play drums, but that certainly inspire my feelings about drumming. And I've gotten very interested in hand drumming. Lately I've been working on playing the djembe." One way Peart's wanderlust has directly affected the sound of his drums is through sampling. "One of the small drums I brought from China is an antique that's too fragile to play. So I took it and a few of the other delicate instruments that I own and sampled them - along with many of my other instruments like my temple blocks and glockenspiel. I've built up a huge library of sounds, and they've made their way onto our albums in many of the different patterns I play." A particular pattern Neil has recorded that demonstrates the value of "world inspiration" comes from Rush's last album, Roll The Bones. "On that record we had a song called 'Heresy' that had a drum pattern I heard when I was in Togo. I was laying on a rooftop one night and heard two drummers playing in the next valley, and the rhythm stuck in my head. When we started working on the song I realized that beat would complement it well."

Love watching young people discover Rush, but really love watching young musicians being exposed to what those gentleman could do. As you noticed, he's very creative / melodic. Indeed, *The Professor* was (is) one of a kind. Starting in the prog 70's, then taking the tech up levels with his talent as he went into his later years. On top of his drumming/percussion genius, he was also into sci fi & wrote the lyrics/story to my favorite Rush album, 2112. He also wrote much of Hemispheres, another concept LP. *Him & Bonzo* are 2 of the main the reasons I started drumming in the late 70's *(as well as Ian Paice & Bill Buford).*

Neal decided to take jazz drumming lessons late in his life, to push himself. He retired from playing when his health prohibited him from nailing everything perfectly. So thankful to have seen Rush live 4 times between 1978-1984.

Hey Neil Pert is my favorite drummer this is why they refer to him as the “Professor “ ! I have seen Rush in concert 14 times and got something new each time!! Yes! Neil had a discussion with Steve Smith after he had noticed his improved technique, and Steve said he had studied with Freddy Gruber. So, Neil began taking lessons with Freddy and learned the concept of everything moves in a circular motion, which on their Test For Echo album and subsequent drum video, Neil played almost exclusively traditional grip to incorporate this concept.

I was honored & privileged to have met Neil Peart in 1981, and Buddy Rich in 1983. In my opinion, these two gentlemen were the very best drummers I've ever seen.

Nice to see an actual drummer reaction to this. Someone who actually knows their way around a kit. Most drum solos, people go get a beer or a concert t-shirt. Not during a RUSH show. I was lucky enough to see a RUSH show and there was an amazing drum solo. Too many great songs to recommend. Just keep going down the rabbit hole.

Neil, Buddy Rich and John Bohnam, IMO the best 3 ever! Neil is known as the professor and this is no lie. He was a professor at a major college in Canada and has a Masters Degree in percussion!
