Jesus healed from my chronic depression! I know my broken spirit came from my immorality. But before that I tried to check my thyroid levels, testosterone levels, read tons of philosophy and psychology books. Got to see people who were truly suffering from mental and physical imbalances. I knew that wasn’t me. So I don’t disregard when physical things are the cause. But Christ healed me and I give testimony to that!

Pr 12:25 - An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up. Pr 13:12 - Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life. Pr 14:10 - Each heart knows its own bitterness, and no one else can share its joy. Pr 14:13 - Even in laughter the heart is sad, and the end of joy is grief. Pr 14:30 - A tranquil mind gives life to the flesh, but passion makes the bones rot. Pr 15:4 - The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit. Pr 15:13 - A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit. Pr 15:14 - The discerning heart seeks knowledge, but the mouth of a fool feeds on folly. Pr 16:2 - All a man's ways seem innocent to him, but motives are weighed by the LORD. Pr 18:14 - A man's spirit sustains him in sickness, but a crushed spirit who can bear? Pr 28:1 - The wicked man flees though no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion.

This is a great message. I believe Tim Keller’s preaching has done more good for my spiritual life that any other resource outside of the Bible itself. With these words… As a music collector/for most of my adult life, with well over 10 thousand records that have passed through my hands (and still have or have traded on), this touches on the spiritual side of why I track music…. I’ve known that music will never fill that void in my life but I’ve sometimes almost feel cursed to keep on looking. May I find the joy beyond the walls of the world.. in Him. Lauren It’s really hard to let the impact of the cross deep into our lives. We treat it like a topical ointment and don’t let it sink into our bones. I feel you, girl (as much as I can, as TK says in the sermon) but more importantly, God sees it, too. And His cure, when by His Grace we let it sink past our skin and muscle into our souls, is spirit-changing.

Lauren I’ve been there, Lauren, when I was in my late forties. People (Women) with diabetes may have an early menopause. Did you hear what Dr. Keller said about his thyroid? I needed hormone therapy. It doesn’t work for everybody but wow did it work for me. I also took and continue to take something else often prescribed, as I have learned recently, in public clinics for the symptoms bothering women during menopause. My doctor prescribed it for headaches and it also helps me sleep. I don’t know your age and you don’t need to tell me. Just remember what Dr. Keller said about his thyroid. It may not be spiritual.

If we live without The Holy Spirit then we are the walking dead. To be born again is not just a personal relationship with The Holy Spirit but rather abiding by the Holy sacraments of baptism,communion and confession. You cannot fulfill communion in Christ by accepting him as your personal savior without abiding in the sacraments. “Take eat this is my body and drink of my blood “ . The modern church denies traditions but they are born from traditions. The creed and the Bible share a common birth and if it were not for the Holy Spirit and the martyrdom of Christians the all modern denominations would not have existed. Ultimately we got to walk the talk of truth by doing the will of God , abiding in the Holy sacraments and thereby forming a relationship with The Holy Spirit. This was one of the most powerful sermons I have ever heard- thank you.

You are obviously Roman Catholic or Greek Orthodox. Here in El Salvador and again in Toledo on a trip, a friend was ecstatic repeating again and again, “El Santísimo”. To me the only physical Santísimo is God in human form, Jesus Christ. To her it was a chalice with wine in it and bread, possibly unleavened but I’m not sure. “Take, eat this in remembrance of Me,” said Jesus to the disciples. Hasn’t the bread and wine become an idol for you guys? I remember reading a Jared Diamond book about a Lutheran congregation that went to a very cold part of the world to settle but they didn’t have room on the ship for food because they had to have all the wine and bread, the silver chalice, the silver plates, the candelabras, the attire for the priests, etc. Their settlement failed completely. There is no trace of them to this day in that part of the world. They gave up. Compare them to the Pilgrims, the simplest of people for whom the “Santísimo”, was Jesus Christ. BTW, why a silver chalice? Didn’t Jesus and the disciples drink from cups, probably simple clay cups? I don’t mean to seem like I don’t appreciate what so many Roman Catholics have done for humanity. The poem which made me fall in love with Jesus is one which begins, “No me mueve, mi Dios, para quererte, ni el cielo que me habías prometido ni el infierno tan temido ...”. It is sometimes listed as anonymous but most authorities think it was written by the great mystic Santa Teresa de Avila, a woman who also served others.

Listening to an intellectual who thought she and her Harvard associate had the answers to all our problems but obviously without Trump and without any elimination of lobbyists, I remembered one of many platitudes I learned from a professor I didn’t even like. This one has stuck, however, because it’s so true. “They will never care how much we know until they know how much we care.” I learned it as a teacher and it helped me decide to let the students do most of the teaching, to empower them and let them choose their topics more often. It was easy for me to praise their work and let them know how amazing they are. Our graduate school teachers did it that way, too. Even on Coursera, the students check the work of their peers. We are encouraged not to concentrate on the grammar but rather to focus on the method and how they’ve learned the theory of language learning.

On 2nd listen, was struck by 17-21, then again at 30ish. At 37, i hear i have misunderstood the fall, it wasn't just a moral story, it was a story of loss.... the tree... the tree Jesus climbed. Also, Keller has reminded us (it's obvious in scripture) that we need each other to truly understand, live and trust the Good News. 'Take hold of the gospel... work it [each and for each other] in your inward lives...' All those declarations i thought merely self-sales... all were reminders.

Tim Keller is a very intellectual pastor who ministers to other intellectuals with an intellectual analysis of life's problems in the light of scripture. However he does not offer simple practical application of biblical truth, as does Derek Prince, for example, another gifted intellectual. I am not responding just to this TK message, but an impression I have gained from hearing many messages and after a dispointed reading of his book about death... which is a perfect example of the point I am making.

I love this sermon. I have a question about the statement that Jesus lost the Father for eternity on the cross. How can this be true when we know Jesus is with the Father now? Thanks for any clarification.

Maybe because we would have lost the Father for eternity (without accepting Jesus' salvation) and He (Jesus) took our punishment? We have difficulties with anything related to time because we can't fathom not being bound by it. He could experience the "losing the Father for eternity" because He is outside of time, and is eternal Himself. Maybe, also, it's a memory (there's the time problem again) that is always with Him, but the joy that the sacrifice brought Him outweighs the horrible pain and anguish of the separation? I wondered about that phrase myself...

Jesus always prayed to his Father but when God rejected him on the cross in our stead, take note that on the cross he cried out, " My God (not my Father ) why have you forsaken me?" Of course that relationship was restored, when "it was finished".

Does this mean therapy should not be taken into consideration for somebody who struggles with depression? I know psychology is such a difficult topic to discuss within the church, but do we completely shut off from resources that are meant for our well being?

Destiny, I don't think so. I think there are serious benefits from therapy. But I think the secret is therapy + God. I tried therapy several times and was still struggling with my issues, but the only one that truly helped and freed me from the bondage was the Christian based therapy where Christ was front and center. We had a special guest speaker at church yesterday and she talked about healing from trauma. Therapy is important, but so is that special, gentle hug from a friend, a kind word, etc. Medication is important. I believe God put doctors and therapists on the earth for a reason. It isn't because we shouldn't trust His healing. He is the ultimate Healer. But He those people he uses and He works _through_ them.

What if Adam and Eve obeyed God and all was well in the garden of Eden. Would Adam or Eve truly worship God in true humility by their own free will. Tim is correct in saying we are made in the image of God because God breathed into our soul. But God did not want to create a robot but rather God needed to create a person in his image which would recognize the Holy Spirit that God instilled within it by his breath. The Holy Trinity is God whereby the individual parts are greater than the whole. If my son were to be crucified then my pain would be greater than if I were to be crucified. God bore the greatest pain not because his son was of greater significance than himself. Salvation is not a thing but rather a journey of sin, repentance, forgiveness accepting the body and blood of Christ and ultimately the resurrection. Adam was not truly alive because he did not experience the journey of salvation. Without fire there is no salvation because fire tests our will. God always allows evil to test us so that we may willingly choose God’s truth. God been God created something out of nothing and that something is our will to humble ourselves to the truth. There is nothing we can explain about the origin of God except that God did not need to be created but rather that God is Creation. The tree is simply the journey towards everlasting life. Tim keeps on emphasizing sacrifice and the the suffering of Christ but the ultimate aim is been born again in the resurrection of Christ. The original sin and the crucifixion are part of the journey to resurrection. Modern churches and the Catholic Church which is ultimately the root of all modern fragmented denomination have lost the essence of the resurrection and have rather emphasized the cross.
