That's exactly what's going on with my Ford. I can't get it centered no matter how much I align the toe in/out. Damn ball joints

Andrew: Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment, I appreciate it! Disconnect the tie rod ends at the knuckles and place the front wheels on turntables with the car’s weight on the wheels. Then see if the wheels can be moved easily back and forth by hand. If they can’t, replace the ball joints if they can check the steering rack. Pat

Is a damaged ball joint a common cause of knocking sounds at he front of the car?

Mikey: Yes ball joints do sometimes rattle when they’re severely worn but much more common and much harder to diagnose are sway bar frame bushings. Those bushings are made of rubber and often look like new but make loud rattling noises over small bumps especially at lower speeds. I would begin with a complete inspection of the front suspension components which will include ball joints, sway bar links, sway bar bushings, control arm bushings, shock or strut mounts, etc. Depending on the age of the car I would be very concerned with the sway bar bushings. why don't manufacturers use suspension parts which can be greased as commonly as they once did?

Hi Wayne: Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment, I appreciate it! The reason for no more grease fittings is far better longevity which sounds counterintuitive but in the real world it works. If techs were capable of doing the greasing properly parts would likely have lasted the life of the vehicle. Unfortunately, it was exceedingly rare that all the proper steps were followed. For proper grease application the tech had to first thoroughly clean the zerk fitting (almost never done) to prevent abrasive dirt from entering the joint. At most techs would use a dirty shop towel to briefly wipe the fitting. This left fine bits of dirt on the fitting which were then pumped into the joint to cause wear. Even if the tech did properly clean the fitting it was likely that the joint would be overfilled with grease breaking the seal on the rubber boot. This allowed dirt and moisture to enter the joint leading to wear. Then there were issues with techs and shop owners alike not understanding the different types of grease and how they react to pressure. This meant that they would typically have one drum of grease and use the same product for low pressure joints (tie rod ends and links) as they did for high pressure joints like ball joints. And several other issues. Bottom line: over the last 20 or so years we have seen a huge decrease in ball joint sales. The new stuff seems to be remarkably more durable. Pat
