The Gossip Girl TV show is an adaptation of the Gossip Girl book series by Cecily von Ziegesar who attended the Nightingale-Bamford school in the 1980s and based the characters off of her wealthy and scandalous classmates. Serena and all the other characters are based on the author’s classmates from the 80s. Hadley Nagel may have been fashion inspo for Blake Lively’s wardrobe on the show but not for the character herself

Actually the characters were based off the authors real life- of course dramatized and the books were a satire. Though sources do say Hadley and another German socialite inspired Serena, that’s where the name supposedly comes from. Her style though was based on what Kate Moss was wearing at the time.

Ah Serena. I missed when Blake was still at least performing her scenes and not phoning it in for half of season 5 and almost all of season 6. She really should have left town at season 4. It would have been the perfect boon ender. The series started when she arrived town and her arc ended when she left. Then Dair would have made more sense without her getting caught in it and Serena would have ended her storylines relatively decently. But ofc GG wouldn't be GG w/o Serena and Blair but honestly they had nothing else going for Serena and Nate at that point. I wish they didn't go on a rollercoaster storytelling and instead took time like they did with Serena's starting over story line in season 1 and gave more time for her decent back into her old ways. Idk like her time to be queen bee in season 2 could've been drawn out. Her problems with alcohol and drugs. Her daddy issues. Her problematic relationship choices could have been given more depth if only they mapped out Serena's storylines instead of just writing what's convenient for the story of the moment. Her golden girl and socialite storylines could blend in with those chsracterizations. As well as NY supposed obsession with her downfall. Blake can be a good actress when she wants to be, they just didn't give her the material at some point. And it's too bad because season 1 Serena was a solid character. Rewatching GG just makes me feel bad that Serena just became a token GG character.

I ended up hating Serena, they turned her into some kind of a villain because they needed to keep the drama going but couldn't compromise the other characters, so she just kept doing one stupid thing after another. And Nate got completely separated from the group and focused on The Spectator as kind of a competitor to Gossip Girl.

But her character suddenly becomes outright selfish w/her schemes when they were exploring the darker side of Serena didn't really work for me. Dark Serena works but villain Serena was just out of character. And yeah Nate and Spectator. Like politics would have been more interesting for Nate since there's drama in that too and sort of juggling whether he'll end up like his fam. Idk I just felt like journalism was so out of character, and they just kept Spectator cause like u said it was a legit publication sort of competing w/gossip girl. Justice for Serenate lol
