this game is actually technically cannon friendly. there was gonna be a second season but shit really started to get off the rails with the show, not to mention telltale fucking fell apart tragically
@Longshanks1690 Жыл бұрын
I don’t think it was anything to do with the show as much as the game sold poorly, even in comparison to Telltale’s other games and then, yeah, Telltale as a whole. The tie ins to the main story were very limited and mostly just reasons for the main actors to give cameos.
@theeobee Жыл бұрын
@@Longshanks1690 season 2 was in development up until telltale crashed and burned. so yeah maybe the show falling off didn't have much to do with it but neither did poor sales really. it's difficult to make a game like this, because it's choice based but it's also cannon. personally i think they did a pretty good job of balancing relevance to the main story without having choices that could potentially affect the book or show. one of the better telltale releases imo
@Longshanks1690 Жыл бұрын
@@theeobee Eh, I wouldn’t say it was “in development” much as S1 was released in 2014 and Telltale filed for bankruptcy in 2018 with basically 0 new information about S2 in that time. Maybe they might have done eventually but it was definitely a project put on the backburner as they focused on other things, and I think that was largely driven by their financial situation which GOT didn’t help. So while cancelling any of their series would have been a bad idea, it seems clear to me that it was in development hell and De Facto cancelled as it wasn’t given any go ahead compared to other projects. I also don’t think canonicity was an issue as they’d set up a story pretty cut off from the rest of Thrones’ world as the events of this conflict wouldn’t spill over into anything else or need to rely on always be referencing what happens in the main series. It was a part of it, obviously, but not to its detriment, imo at least.

This game had so much potential, but they focused on trying to be bigger than they should have been, as well as just getting as many cameos from the show as possible. It could have been so much better with just two changes. One: Remove Mira's storyline in King's Landing. It makes no sense that she would be Margaery Tyrell's handmaiden, either before, during, or after the first phase of the War of the Five Kings. Change it so she was Sansa's handmaiden and she got imprisoned as a hostage to deter House Forrester from fighting (it didn't work). Introduce her in the second episode, right after the Purple Wedding, being interrogated over Sansa's disappearance, and then have House Lannister send her to the North to marry a Whitehill, the heir to Highpoint, allowing the Whitehills to stake a claim on Ironrath lands, benefitting the house that helped the Lannisters and weakening the house that helped the Starks. From there, we can get another perspective in the story, a girl who has spent the past year or two in prison, and all the trauma that causes, as well as one who knows nothing of what has happened in that time. We would also get a perspective into House Whitehill, allowing us to sympathize with them, maybe they are dicks but the heir grows thanks to Mira and becomes a better person by the end of the first season, complicating the blood feud. House Whitehill could also be permitted to visit the rebuilding Winterfell under House Bolton, keeping Ramsey around in the cast and showing that in the face of House Bolton, the Whitehills are actually pretty decent, and maybe swaying them slowly against House Bolton, maybe in support of Stannis or something, again further complicating relationships. Mira herself could even begin to side with her new house, after all, who knows what bad things could have happened to her in prison as punishment for her father going to war, she may feel betrayed by House Forrester, and so more inclined to help the Whitehills. She could give them information that they don't know about Ironrath, she could become very valuable to them for various reasons, her womb and her knowledge and her status, and so she could have some bargaining power there, she could learn to stand up for herself and, with all these arcs going on, she could earn their respect and become a proper player in the political game of thrones. Just like what the King's Landing plot tried to do, but now it's far more tight and streamlined. And, since it's a choose-your-ending kind of story, depending on how well you play Mira and how good at the politicking you make her and how you choose for her to handle her trauma, it can have various endings. You could end up with her having no agency and just being their broodmare as her original house is destroyed, you could have her becoming equals with her husband and leading the charge of change, you could have her getting herself killed in many different ways or even executed is she plays it very poorly (like they end up with Talia who is just far easier to control), or maybe she finally escapes and ends the season on the run. Any of which is more interesting than any of her original endings. Two: Remove the Beyond-the-Wall storyline. The North Grove is a bad idea and clearly they had no idea where they were going with it, it would either entirely break the lore, or would be pathetically unimportant in the grand scheme of things. They just wanted to go bigger with it, more fantasy, but had no endgame. So, instead of Gared having the whole North Grove plotline, he just stays with the Night's Watch. He engages in the politics up there. Telltale games are not great action games, but they can be good choice games if they actually commit to big decisions, and politics are the biggest of decisions. Gared meets the Whitehill man who is also sent to the Wall and grows from that. The whole point of the storyline of the Wall ought to be that unity is better than disunity. Gared has to try and befriend his rival. He could also go out ranging and maybe come across a child and have an epsiode where he is protective of them or something, extending the idea of empathy and unity to the wildlings. It could then have the late season battle be the Watchers on the Wall great battle, followed by Stannis's arrival and Stannis asking Gared about the Forresters, as well as Jon asking Gared to help him with the peace between the wildlings, before they are betrayed, potentially by that Whitehill man depending on how well you befriended him or not. There are choices here that can change how the story at the Wall plays out. He can help the unity between the wildlings and the brothers or he can harm it, he can befriend the Whitehill man or he can fail at that, he can send Stannis towards the Forresters to help them or he can not (maybe he is sour about the Forresters sending him to take the black), or he can send Stannis to House Whitehill if he does not like Stannis (which could be more interesting if the Whitehills have actually begun to turn on the Boltons thanks to Mira), there could even be a wildling woman or man (the mother or father of the wildling child he saved) that Gared could have a romance with to help the themes of unity. The first season could end with Stannis marching into the North and Jon being betrayed, with possibilities of what could happen next being very exciting. And of course, there would be a dozen different endings for Ironrath in the first season, and that would also dramatically impact the next season in regards to Stannis's march and the Winterfell plotlines and whatever goes on at the Wall. Those two changes can streamline the whole story, keeping it focused on House Forrester in ways that can clearly tie back to them in future seasons. The only separate plotline would be Asher, who I think should have a changed story as well but in different ways, but he would still be in Essos as he will represent the Fire in the Ice & Fire of it all, and so he can bring over some original characters who will represent that side of things if Asher dies near the end, which could further complicate things later down the line with Stannis or the Boltons or even the arrival of Dany and such. Regardless, everything should still revolve around the politics of House Forrester and Ironrath, that is the focal point of the game.

No one has commented on this yet but DAMN, these are actually great ideas that would've improved the game It's all very well thought out
@TAMThomasTAM Жыл бұрын
@Maryssa Flynn So true! Have a character be a warg, and also have there be a dragon's egg discovered somewhere in Ironrath, so it ties into both the Ice and Fire of it all. There are tales of the dragons laying eggs at Winterfell or the Wall, and Ironrath is not far from those. The egg doesn't even need to hatch, it can just be a valuable thing that people want to buy or sell, and the idea of it hatching adds to the suspense.

Duncan never said you SHOULD tbf, just that it’s something which HAS been done in the past during times of hardship, so that Ethan would be aware of the option. Talking to some of the other characters like Malcolm or Talia is probably better for informing your decision than asking Royland and Duncan themselves. One big thing in Duncan’s favor is that Lord Gregor trusted him and him alone with the secret of the North Grove, not Royland.

Gared being able to ask questions like "Who is the Lord now?" and "Why do the Whitehills hate the Forresters" is really dumb when they come after him claiming he was raised alongside the Forresters and treated by the Lady as if he was one of their own. He would know these things, so giving the exposition scenes to him is really dumb. They could have very easily just had him as some commoner peasant who lived on the edge of their lands, with him never having met the family aside from the Lord and Rodrik. His uncle could still be the Steward, which is why he's treated well by the Forresters when he arrives wounded and why they fight for his survival, but it would also make him distant enough to not really know the family that well, or know the laws of succession that much, or know the importance of the sword, or know why there is emnity between the Forresters and the Whitehills. His relation to the Forresters isn't even important as he's sent to the Wall and never comes back or interacts with another Forrester again. But of course that had to put in the line that the Forresters treated this lowly peasant as if he was one of the family, because they're the good guys and we have to know that, they treat everyone equally (besides being feudal overlords who have absolute power over their peasants).

I hope this series continues. I think there are actually some interesting ideas even if the writing is not top notch. Commentary good as usual

I think I heard somewhere the maggots only eat the dead flesh which is convenient, although putting maggots in a wound at all feels counterintuitive

Ill probably be speaking blasphemy but this game is actually what introduced me to GoT and aSoIaF, i was really big on telltale games around 2014/15 abd this was free one month on ps plus, played the entire game and then watched the show as much as i couldz then got the books fro Christmas that year and read the books and have been a huge fan ever since

Rule #1 about this game - everyone is a psychopath. From one moment to the next, they flip from one emotion to the other, betray everyone and anyone, and do whatever the plot wants them.

I know this was a year ago, but this was great to listen to. I hope you do more of the game. It’s so fun to listen to hahhaa.

That was actually very enjoyable. The game is good enough to sustain some tension, had a great twist in the end and as pointed out, the celebrity characters support the game as a whole quite well - on top of silly moments and dialogue being stupid enough to be still enjoyable. Not to mention that with you two silly goofballs providing interesting meta/ trivia knowledge, your humor and playing off each other works so goddamn well. I know live streams are a big commitment of time and effort and it can be hard coordinating 2 adults to find time and energy to do content together, but I would strongly encourage you to reeeeeally extent your coop-content. I love both your channels individually but the S+ content is your collaborations, the deep knowledge and involvment in the material really compliment your rather carefree and humerous way of living in the moment.

I actually really hope you guys finish this game, such a fun stream! Regardless of how mediocre a lot of these telltale games are, they're very nostalgic and I have a lot of good memories of all of them.

It would be great if you could continue this playthrough, it's really entertaining and the game itself has its distinct charm.

Random fun fact: maggots being used medicinally is still a thing it’s called maggot therapy. They only eat dead flesh and can clean infected wounds often faster and more effectively than a scalpel. I’m not entirely sure how they remove them but they grow pretty fast (usually they’re really small when put in like the size of a grain of rice) so I assume after a little while you can just like,,, pick them out once they have cleared the dead material

I loved this game when I watched a 12 hour long play of it. *It's like watching one of your theory discussion videos when I haven't read the books myself, only gorged on Schwift's Abridged audio books.*

See an ironwood chamberpot sounds like a terrible idea, till you remember Ramsey would probably love a type of chamberpot that accumulates stench over time as a gift for theon

Played this game before ever seeing the show or reading the books. Enjoyed it so much I decided to watch the show (I was like 13, and this was just after S6 came out). Ramsay was my favourite character from this game and I was so hyped when I heard he was in the show. Funny enough I hated both Margaery and Dany in this game but I like them in the show.

Wow the Ramsay scenes and dialogue were actually really good. Seems like there was potential in this, sad it was uninspired.

Wait let me get this straight. There's a 2012 Game of Thrones RPG, produced by a bunch of French, Warhammer 40k, tabletop gaming-style nerds? Started years before the HBO show was even a twinkle in Benioff and Weiss' beady little eyes? Sounds like we have ourselves some top-notch content boys what are we waiting for!
