The Catelyn breakfeast is great from a story perspective. Catelyn had refused to care of herself while she sat at Bran's side, never eating properly. After almost dying to the assassin she finally gets the resolve to live again and realises that she has been neglecting herself, Robb and everyone else. When she asks for breakfast everyone is so happy and reliefed about it that they go over the top, cause they care. She temporarily developed a eating disorder out of depression.

I already posted a comment but another point. In the first third of Clash there's like five or six chapters in a row that juxtapose the food people are eating as political commentary. People starving in king's landing while Tyrek's wedding feast is flaunted. The harvest feast in the North. Tyrion eating like a king. Arya eating bugs and worms in the Riverlands. The summer feast with Renly's people, etc.

GRRM might not have meant it, but it could be a way of seeing Stannis caring enough about his brother never to hold his sexuality against him. He never told Robert, at least, since Robert doesn't even realize Loras is as gay as sunshine and praises him as the kind of son anyone would want. Catelyn's first food description does benefit the story! The food she gets is kind of normal, just a bit extra. She got more than she asked for, which says she probably didn't ask for much, that gives you a decent idea where her head is at. Also, the fact she was given more than she asked for tells you the people serving her care about her a bit, what with her son probably being dead soon, and want to cheer her up with blackberry preserves. We can contrast it with the next meal from Bran, which is more like party food. They're celebrating his revival. Or not because that would have been like a fortnight ago, oh well.

Dearest Glimbus, let me spin you a tale. When I was a young, strange, not-yet-diagnosed-with-ADHD girl, I used to eat paper all the gd time. Paper, grass, flowers, I was out here eating weird sh*t all day. And while every part of the dandelion is indeed edible, as I would tell the visibly weirded-out other children, paper is not. The day I finally stopped consuming it was the day I ate a full page of notebook paper and felt very ill afterwards. I beg of you, please do not eat the winds of winter. We all know how many pages it is likely to be. We will all let you off the hook for your brazen declaration. Be well, don’t eat tree seasoned with dye and bleach ❤ Your friend, Nikki

14:00 As someone who comes from an ex-nomad people, yeah, everything used to be horse-based. There were only horses around and whatever they could trade (like flour, oil and such), so all the food was very heavy (so that you don't need to stop often) and related to horses. A lot of fermented stuff because you don't have a fridge and you need to preserve the milk somehow. I never tried araka or kumys, but some people swear by it. The pastry - mostly simple dishes from flour and water or flour and milk, fried in oil.

I love that he mentioned acorns as food. It's very much under-estimated. There were entire bronze age woodland cultures that started living mainly on acorns. The bitterness and poisoning quality comes from the tannins in the acorn, which are water soluble. They filled large earthen basins with water and washed out all the tannins of a huge amount of acorns, which are plenty in the forest and which can be stored for a long time, even somewhere as simple as a hole in the ground.

Chickpeas are originally from Asia Minor (Turkey) but they were grown in Italy by the Romans. More recently people successfully grow them in England, so while they need a temperate climate they certainly can be grown in relatively cool climates. Chickpeas main virtue is that they can be dried and used in winter, so the Nights Watch probably import them from other areas of Westeros or from Essos (impounded perhaps).

It's a great topic because it lends itself to talking about the books from a 'micro' perspective (the actual craft of the writing etc.), while stuff like theory or character discussion (which is also great obv) often defaults to a 'macro perspective'. The fermented mare's milk is just kumys, a mongolian/kazach extra fermented yogurt, it can be made rather strong in alcohol content, never tried tho. Probably sucks in terms of taste, but makes perfect sense for a society that doesn't grow plant-based things to make cheap drinks from. Also, dishes from blood are a thing, it comes down to letting blood curtle and boiling it until it thickens. I don't like it personally, but some people I know do. Where I live it's usually made into sausages, wonder what a pie would look like actually. It's cheap too, but takes time to make

First Thing: I think the importance of the breakfast for Catelyn while in WInterfell could show like the dedication of the winter fell staff to the stark family. Like Catelyn's just gone through this mess and maybe the kitchen is trying to send their emotional support in the form of food? Second Thing: Are lizard lions Komodo dragons or something similar? Komodo's have venomous bites but idk if the lizard lions do, but the venom aspect definitely seems like Neck-ish

And it's low key horrifying to realise how many food descriptions didn't make it into this video, like Joffrey and Sansa's fish and wine on their first date, or Joffrey's arm for Nymeria which is easily an S tier as are all things that cause Joffrey misery.

I mean for a medieval setting there’s no refrigeration, so any foodstuff quick to spoilage becomes much less common outside of wherever its grown. So hearty root vegetables that can last a month or two after harvest are going to often be on hand.

My favourite mention of a real world place in a fantasy setting is in the English dub of Mewtwo Stikes Back. Team Rocket are disguised as vikings (it makes no sense in context either), Brock says "i didn't know vikings still existed" to which Ash quips "they mostly live in Minnesota". So not only do vikings conically exist in Pokemon, so does the state of Minnesota and so does the Minnesota Vikings football team.

George makes the fermented mare's milk sound bad, but it's a real thing called kumis, and apparently it's pretty good - mare's milk is higher in sugar than cow's milk, and it apparently tastes like Calpico, if you've had that. Actually, Calpico modeled its flavor after kumis, so that's how good it apparently is

I think Catelyn III, AGOT may be trying to emphasize the homeyj feeling of Winterfell for Catelyn so, when she leaves, you can understand her homesickness/nostalgia on a more visceral level. I feel like the hot spring water that pumps through the castle walls and abundant furs all contribute to that as well; it all conveys "cozy". Also, to emphasize that it was more than she asked for could imply she didn't ask for much bc she's worried sick about Bran but the servants of Winterfell are concerned for her wellbeing. More "homey, safe" vibes.

I was having so much fun listening to you all rank George R.R. Martin's food descriptions that I decided to write my own in the style of based off my lunch for today! "The meal readily filled his gnawing stomach, the earlier grumbling quickly forgotten. He sat before a large bowl of pasta mixed with cheese and seasoning, the hot steam lashing across his face and squinting his eyes. Next to the bowl were crisp rice crackers that snapped with each bite between his teeth. He finished with a ripe orange, the juice running between his fingers as he consumed its pink flesh."

(For context i work at a drugstore lol) "She hurdled to the break room table, desperate to satiate as much of her incredible hunger as possible with what little time she had before she had to return to the grueling task of sorting the vast array of potions and creams on the shelves of the apothecary. She pulled out a concoction of soft wheat bread inlaid with cooked chicken breast laid on strips of crisped bacon and lettuce with a rich creamy sauce, the crumbs settling on the edges of her hungry mouth. She devoured the meal in 5 minutes and washed it down with a soup of coffee bean powder drowned in a thick sugary syrup and plenty of milk. She wiped her mouth on the sleeve of her tunic, and prepared herself for the toils and battles with angry customers that lay ahead of her."

Fry bread is a Native American dish that's exactly what it sounds like: fried bread, eaten alone or with sweet or savory toppings. It comes from when Native Americans were being displaced from their homes by European colonizers and were unable to farm their traditional food staples, and were given basic ingredients by said colonizers which they turned into fry bread.
