What was this systems actual purpose in the seventies, ? If the canister clogged or the vacuum valve stuck, we smelled fuel instead of a $1000 dealer bs repair . Smelling gas was daily for 100 years. No one died, even the stats of gas stations blowing up were minimal when the service attendant filling your tank was smoking.. manufactures went along with public groups to address the odors to make cars more appealing to the less masculine. Sales. In larger numbers. More plastic to age, extreme temperature failures, Yes I do dislike plastic in the wrong applications.

Hey Mike. Good to see you're back in your office. Hehe. I just had a similar problem on the wife's f150. I tried to talk her into pulling off the tank side hose of the purge valve before filling up, but she made me find and fix the problem instead. The atmospheric hose was connected to a steel bed support channel. It was FULL of that same dust you have there and couldn't exhale. Plugged solid. See how much you've taught me!!! Thanks for all you do to teach us Mike. Much appreciated.

I remember when GM had pancake filters at the bottom of the round charcoal canisters in the old carburated pickups and Surburbans. A quick way to fill older Ford Explorers when they wouldn't take gas was to open the hood, remove the green cap on the evap line and push down on the Schrader valve. That relieved the tank pressure and fuel went into the tank. Good to see you Mike, hope the family's doing well! Thanks for this video. Don't know for sure about my wife's 06 Kia Sorento V6 if it has that filter.

Ha! I sold a brand new Astro Van with this problem years ago. Guy could only put in 10 gallons then click, click click to 20 gallons. He brought it in under warranty, they couldn't find the problem, so he did a lemon law buy back, replacing the vehicle for another Astro Van. After all the paperwork was done, and he was ready to leave he wondered aloud, "hey, is this van going to have the same problem?" I replied, "I don't know, let's go see" It did. He didn't have to but he took it home anyways. Design error. My old VW also had the problem, I turned the pump handle 90 degrees and was able to fill the tank.

Mike, awesome video! It’s probably the 20-25th one I’ve watched and it’s the best one I’ve come across. I’m working on a 2004 dodge 1500 slt with a 5.7 Hemi. I was pretty green with evap before but have been forcing myself to learn. I definitely had a stage 5, maybe more since I was getting gas spilling out. I unhooked the purge valve lines and the problem went away. I was feeling good thinking that I found the problem. But it came back recently. I took the cannister off prior and blew through all openings and didn’t notice any restrictions. I’m now thinking it’s the vent. Your video has been very helpful and I will probably watch it many times.

My dad’s car has this stage 5 clicker issue too so I appreciate this video. His is an 05 Mustang. He was told a spider might have got down the fuel neck and you mentioned spider webs could be a culprit blocking the air to fuel ratio when at the pump, so my question is how do spiders get in there? I’m guessing they got on the gas pump nossel and then forced into the fuel neck of the car 🤷🏻‍♂️
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining Жыл бұрын
Hello, That's a great question! Most of the spider webs I've seen blocking systems have been at the filter side of the system. So they didn't have to crawl to far to cause an issue. If there was a restriction at the fuel neck that's a bit tougher. But they are pretty sneaky! ~Ryan

Hi Gregory, A quick test you could do, is disconnect the breather hose from the tank to canister and see if you can fill it with gas. If you can, it has to be a restricted EVAP canister or something down the line of the canister, like a LDP or it's filter. Thanks for watching! ~Ryan Wilsing

Two questions: First, enhanced EVAP has been out for years so why recently having problems, or has this problem been around for awhile? Second, can this cause the gas pump nozzle to NOT shut off when fuel tank is full. I have a 2019 Transit 250 with under 10K miles and when I was topping off the tank after the nozzle shut off the nozzle did not shut off the second time but let gas back flow out the filler.
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Hiker Biker, thanks for watching! This has been a an issue for a while now. It mostly depends on the design of the system and it's ability to overcome pressure issues in the tank. As for the nozzle not clicking after it's clicked once, that's likely because pressure didn't build up in the already full filler neck, leading to gas spilling out. If the nozzle clicks off and you don't have a restriction, the tank is full. Don't top off as it can cause issues in the system. Mike Becker, Senior Instructor

I don't get one critical aspect: Is the charcoal filter meant to filter the fresh air coming IN the vapor canister from the outside, or is it meant to filter the gas vapors from inside the canister before releasing them OUT into the atmosphere? I mitigate this manually guessing it's close to full and slowing the flow. I don't have a smoke machine but could this be the same solution? Take the canister out and and clean it? It's got 175k miles.

Hey Paul, thanks for watching dude! It sounds like the system is building up pressure and burping back. I'd start by making sure there's good flow through the system, just like we did here. Mike Becker, Senior Instructor

Hey Cris214, whats going on with it? It's a hard to fill issue? It's possible there could be a stuck relief valve on the tank or a restriction of the filler neck vent. ~Mike

I've had this problem on my 2001 Dodge ram. I tried pouring in by hand but then it tends to burp and come back out so it has to be poured in very very slowly. Takes me almost a half an hour to put in 10 gallons of gas

I've had this problem with my 05 Mustang, but I've managed to slow-fill the tank at the pump. I reverse my hand position on the pump nozzle, so that my pinkie finger is on the very tip of the nozzle lever. This gives me just the right amount of leverage to trickle in some gas without causing the pump to shut off. Fortunately, I only need to do this for a half minute or so, and then the pump works normally. Don't know why this is, but it works for my car.

Huh, I have this problem on *some* pumps on my diesel car. I assume diesels also have this system? Why would it only happen on some pumps though? Just an early/borderline case?
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 2 жыл бұрын
Hey VorpalGun, diesel is a whole other animal. I don't want to put my foot in my mouth but I believe there are different flow rate diesel pumps at different stations. Some smaller light duty cars can't accept the high flow rate of the pump. They weren't designed to handle that much incoming fuel. Mike Becker, Senior Instructor

@@GoTechTraining Thanks for the quick and informative answer! I have a Subaru Outback 2011 specifically (we got diesel variants of those here in EU). One pump at a gas station will work while another (identical looking) at the same station won't. Super confusing. This has happened at multiple different stations and different franchises of gas stations too. As for flow rates there is always a button to enable high flow, I have not used that. I have not seen any other signage indicating different pump rates. Sometimes there is a separate truck pump that is not under the main roof (to allow full size lorries to fit). Those have a wider diameter on the pipe that goes into the car, and won't even fit on a normal car. From some googling it seems that diesel evaporates much more slowly and thus the system is different, apparently on some older cars at least they just have vent line(s) and roll over valve(s). I have not found the details for my car though. Presumably it must still have *something* to let the air out while refuelling and let air back in as fuel is used up. I guess the chance of such a setup getting plugged in some way is much smaller, but probably non-zero still.

Hi Mike, great video! My 2007 MDX is a stage 3 clicker. It can accept gas for the most part. But the pump always shutoff 1-2 gallons short. Previously the fuel gauge can rise slightly above full mark. Now it points to the full mark exactly. What might be the cause of it? Thanks.

Hey Wei Su, thanks for watching! That's interesting. How do you know its short? The tank will usually hold at least a gallon even if it reads empty. Mike Becker, Senior Instructor

@@GoTechTraining Previously the pointer of the fuel gauge can go beyond 'full mark' a lilttle when it is really full. Now the pointer will point at 'full mark' exactly. So I know it is 1-2 gallons short. Also previously the fuel gauge will stay above or at 'full' for quite a while after a fuel-up. Now it starts dropping right after I leave gas station. This is quite annoying.

@GoTechTraining. Checked all hoses for restrictions and didn't find any. What I did find, is when I disconnected the vent hose from the tank (that connects to the filler neck), and shot some bursts of compressed air into, which actually inflated the fuel tank. When I stopped the compressed air, the air rushed back out of the vent hose I blew into. Is that normal ?

Hi Robert, Some of those Ram trucks had fuel tank issues. I would Remove the hose from the tank to the charcoal canister and remove the recirculation tube from the filler neck to the top of the tank. Try to fill the system, if the tank will still not accept fuel, the fuel tank may be the issue. If it does accept fuel, check for a restriction in the recirculation tube, charcoal canister and ESIM. ~Ryan Wilsing

I've had this problem for about a year now. First it started that the car wouldn't take gas and I'd have to spend five minutes filling it up. Now its worse, same initial problem, but, when it gets below a quarter of a tank, the engine starts running really rough at idle and acceleration from stop and if I don't relieve the pressure and put more gas in the car, I'll foul a plug and eventually a coil. So..... Since I'm living in poverty and food is my priority, not fixing my car. (Unfortunately I live in my car) I found that if I keep the engine running when I'm pumping gas in the car, then leave my gas cap off and drive it for about 5 or 10 minutes. That helps. I then put the cap back on and drive normally until im at 1/4 tank again and then i repeat what i just said. Do you have any suggestions for folks who cant afford mechanic work with this issue? 😓🤷. Thanks. Sorry to bother you.
