Well Goku didn’t grow till he was 19 as he was 13 in dragonball and only developed after training with Kami *edit* Nevermind he explained it. Closest thing I can really say is that Goten might have taken a majority of Goku traits and as such has slower aging. There also could be that Goten body isn’t suppose to naturally grow that tall

DBS Trunks should already have the same appearance as 'Future Trunks in training'. The current Moro arc should be centered around them as well, instead of Goku and Vegeta, whom are way too strong. It feels extremely forced to pull even stronger new characters out of nowhere. If Trunks and Goten were the protagonists, it would make sense because they're still weak, have room for development.

So, in old Japanese culture everyone would celebrate "becoming one year older" on the same day, the start of the year. So, Goten is only 6 years and x months old at the time of the Tournament or he is "6 turning 7", but if using that old system he is "Going through his 7th year of life" or he is "7 years" That's the only way I could see this age problem making any sense.

so... essentially the design team never really thought about updating goten and trunks' design, despite adjusting the years and such. to be fair, they havn't been major players at all and havn't gotten much focus. but still, keeping them looking like young kids implies less time passing then what actually has. honestly, the best way to show that time HAS passed would be to have goten and trunks look their age. i feel like either the writers/artists are being lazy and don't want to redesign them, OR they don't want to change the characters at all and are keeping them little kids for either comedy aspects or to keep it like Dragon Ball Z, despite the fact they should be teens by now.

Off topic, but on the subject of Saiyan hybrids, one thing I miss is Gohan's tail. Imagine how sweet it would've been if just before the Tournament of Power, when Vegeta first held Bulla, we saw a blue fuzzy tail wrap itself around Vegeta's arm. Just Saiyan. And yeah, I hope they re-introduce Tarble at some point. Maybe Vegeta can have him as a plus-one when he finally gets round to visiting Universe 6 Sadala.

Future Trunks and Kid Trunks looking different at the same age can be explained pretty easily. Everyone is under the assumption that Future and Kid Trunks are the same being, but most likely they are not. They have the same parents and name but their genetic makeup is most likely different. They are more like brothers that have the same name. My reason for thinking this is that because Future Trunks altered the timeline before he was conceived, that might have caused things to happen ever so slightly differently. This results in the date of the conception of Kid Trunks being different to Future Trunks, and that could mean that a different sperms fertilized and/or egg were involved in the process, meaning that Future Trunks and Kid Trunks are genetically different. This would help explain how Kid Trunks got SSJ to easily as a child and why their bodies grow at a different rate. We can even use that now they have canonically different hair colour as support for this explanation.

I have a head canon that Saiyans grow progressively until they reach a certain height, then grow in massive spurts. Goku had his first growth spurt in the three years between Tenkaichi Budokais, then his second spurt while training with Kami. Gohan had his first spurt in the hyperbolic time chamber, then the second during the 7 year time skip. Trunks and Goten have yet to have their first spurt, and future Trunks aged faster as a defense mechanism due to being in constant danger.

Vegeta once stated that saiyans age differently, so that they can preserve their bodys to be in prime state when needed. Goten and trunks (fusioned) where even a decent match against buu. maybe their biological need to grow their bodys into its next shape of age, has been stalled because they were in no need of any more power than they already had - keeping their growth preserved for a longer time so that their saiyan bodys may last longer overall. With future trunks having done less training, his body needed to grow further just to gain more power to stand up to all of the power around him. This caused him to age relatively fast. Or like with gohan - no training at all gave him a relatively normal aging process. But then all of a sudden his surroundings changed, he had to train to stay a decent match for the people around him and even then he couldnt do much against piccolo, freeza, the androids and even cell. But his body rapidly aged and turned into its teen form at the age of only 10/11. Saiyans bodys might age out if necessity, but also preserve their aging by not having any need to do so.

The problem with this is that before Goku Saiyans never trained. They enjoyed fighting and getting stronger but training was something they just didn't do, it's why Vegeta was so shocked that Goku, who a year ago couldn't handle Raditz, is now strong enough to rival him. The idea that someone could get stronger through hard work and determination like that was a foreign concept to him. Which means that all Saiyans before Goku should have aged extremely slowly, since they were always out and about, yet we have no evidence of that happening.

Like being stuck in one of their spacepods for a year or so to travel to a different planet, might have caused their bodys to preserve themselves. That's similar to my theory. In a nutshell, I think that maybe Saiyans reach physical maturity faster based on training and battles. Goten, Trunks, and even Goku didn't have the kind of training and battles that Gohan and Future Trunks did. Gohan, for example, way fighting and training with guys way above his power level from the age of 4. Goku trained and fought a lot as a kid, but with guys with power levels in the hundreds. Gohan and Future Trunks were fighting and training with guys with power levels in the millions! Goten and Present Trunks only seriously fought and trained at that level briefly to face Buu, and even then they relied mostly on fusion.

I know i mentioned this in another comment awhile back, but the real life reason Goten and present Trunks aged weirdly was because they were only supposed to be kids in the Buu Saga. And by the time Super was made, they had become just background characters, nowhere near as relevant as they were during the fight with Buu. Gohan more or less aged consistently throughout Dragon Ball Z because he was originally supposed to become the next main character. Goku did not age consistently throughout Dragon Ball, but i'm convinced the main reason Goku was so short is because even Toriyama himself didn't know at the time how tall Goku would be as adult. Remember, Goku and Krillin are almost the same height throughout most of Dragon Ball. Toriyama may have simply decided to make adult Goku a lot taller to look more powerful and heroic, since the story was moving in a more serious direction at that point.

I don't wanna give Toyotaro an excuse, but the case could be made that future Trunks and Gohan are both saiyans that were thrown (as most non hybrid saiyans are) into battlefield and harsh situations since a really young age and that's why they grew faster. Gotenks and present Trunks live a more pacific life compared to them and that's why they get to be in their kid state for a longer period of time. I have 1 theory as to why future Trunks looks older than his present counterpart. Maybe young saiyans can age faster when necessary. Because of the state of the future timeline Trunk's body aged faster so he could reach his pinnacle as an effective fighter. It’s really the lack of progress in the appearance that doesn’t make much sense. With Goku as a precedent, you can have them be at least 15 and still look basically like children, but you also have to at least make it clear that they look older. Kid Goku didn’t just sprout from his 12 year old self to his adult self at the end of Dragon Ball. They gave him a visible growth spurt in between all of that when you saw him at 15, where he was drawn much taller, with slightly different proportions that also benefited the changing tone for the fight sequences, and his face started to be drawn ever so slightly more mature. We’re being led to think Goten and Trunks are just going to sprout up to their adult looking teen selves in a matter of a few years at this point from the same height they were when they were like… 6 and 7, on top of the fact that Goten keeps visibly shrinking from time to time? That’s ridiculous.

Actually, the reason why Goten and Trunk’s hight are so small is explained in the new Dragon Ball SuperHero movie. Piccolo asks why they got so tall and Goten responds, us saiyans are really small, but we get a giant growth spurt. I guess the directors of the movie don’t know anything about Dragon Ball

The thing is, the dont technically change in physical appearance because they are half-saiyans. I'm sure if its the same as full-blooded saiyans, but it's at least half that. Saiyans lose their youth at 80, so half-saiyans would probably be about 50 or 60. Edit: Gohan was 9-11 when he got SSJ2 while he looked like 7 or 8.

Another way to show their aging makes no sense is with Marron. She isn't a Saiyan at all, so you can't even use the already flimsy excuse of Saiyan growth rates are different with her. The only reason Goten, Trunks, and Marron are suffering from Ash Ketchum Syndrome is because the writers don't find them important enough to keep updated and it shows all throughout Super. They can't even be bothered to make sure Future Trunks' hair color matches his younger counterpart for fuck's sake.

I think the growth of a saiyan depends on wether they are under severe pressure like Future Trunks was, living in an apocalyptic time, and kid Trunks is living peacefully and doesn't require for him to grow fast, just like how Goku never faced world ending threats until King Piccolo and in contrast Gohan had to face many world ending threats challenges thus he grew up faster than Goku did. Or It's just bad writing.
