They don't say it explicitly in the anime, but the reason Tengen feels so sorry for the deaths of his siblings is because he was the one who killed them. Tengen's father forced all of his children to fight each other in a fight to the death, but none of them knew it since they all had their faces covered, that was how Tengen killed his own siblings without knowing it, being him and his younger brother the only survivors of that massacre. When Tengen discovered it, he was completely horrified and felt very guilty, (In fact, they put that moment in the opening, it's the black and white scene, you can go see it, there's nothing in the opening that spoils it for you anymore). That together with the repudiation he felt towards his clan's belief of abandoning your identity and being willing to sacrifice people for the mission was what in the end convinced him to desert and flee with his wives, he even considered exterminating his entire clan to prevent more people from suffering for them, but in the end he did not do it since he did not have the heart to hurt his own father and brother.

IN CASE YOU HAVENT NOTICED, Gyutaro is actually a very intelligent fighter. he saw that Tengen saved tanjiro the first time by yeeting him with his LEFT hand, and then he he saved him by kicking him with his LEFT leg. he was strong or fast enough to go toe to toe with Gyutaro, so, he didnt always go for the kill. he slowed him down by poisoning him little by little, then cut off his LEFT hand. by the time u read this comment you will have watched the next episode so, after that Gyutaro cut is left eye. he was intelligent enough to immediately tell they were not tsuguko aka master and students, without ever getting hit knew that those bombs and kunai knives both had anti-demon properties. He was amazing as a fighter. in terms of fighting instincts and skills, i would say he is after akaza, though not in power.

The thing is, you should expect what happened to Tengen. The entire time he was fighting, he was able to stay in the fight because Tanjiro was covering his back and dealing with the attacks that Tengen wasn't able to deal with. Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke teaming up against Daki was needed to make something happen, but it also meant Tengen no longer had his back protected. The result of that is obvious.
