When people say the storyline is basic they are essentially saying it is fairly straightforward and has a lot of cliches. There are also a lot of "isn't that convenient" writing. You aren't going to be stuck pondering things and get big plot twists that shock you. There is nothing wrong with basic straight forward stories, especially if you enjoy all the elements put into the story. A likable cast of characters and the world/setting can really carry a basic story. Not to mention in terms of anime you also have amazing visuals and music to enhance it.

It's also worth noting, there's tons of other shows that follow the same beats and patterns, but nobody says a negative thing about it. i think people who criticize demon slayer for being basic are missing the point to why is it fun to watch. It is not a mystery show, it is not a riddle. And you don't have to think about it too much to understand what it is about. But why would it be a bad thing? Very good animation, well choreographed combat and pretty good music is just an icing on a cake. Story is straight forward but characters are very well developed and it balance itself very well between being scary, funny and engaging. And when it gets heavy it is only heavy enough to make the point and push story forward (or to make you cry a little). i can't wait for probably next year for the last arch of the story.

Urokodaki wasn't running with his arms behind him. He had his arms tucked in his shirt for warmth, and the sleeves loose. I believe that's a real style of wearing clothes, or at least used to be. But the origin of the running with hands behind oneself comes from how ninja would sprint from one hiding spot to the next while trying to make as little noise as possible from friction of the old timey cloths or any armor they may be wearing. It is not meant for long distance running. The anime Naruto, used that stile of running a lot because the show features ninjas, and it saved on animation budget, and kind of became iconic as the anime run.

A little cultural information, 'goblin mask' is a pretty harsh localization for the sake of giving us something familiar. The mask is a representation of tengu, basically a divine bird person of the mountains. While they are often considered dangerous, I would say the level of respect they earn is somewhere in the middle of a priest and an angel. There's a number of masks in Japanese culture representing various creatures that have grown popular, and Tengu masks are one of the most iconic, well recognized for the nose they depict.

"I could do that" -- you're really underestimating mountain climbing. Just because you're not scaling up a sheer cliff face doesn't mean it's not difficult and dangerous. It's all up hill and can still be quite steep, it can be cold, the weather can change quickly, there can be predators like bears, the air gets thinner so breathing is more difficult. Never underestimate mountains, or nature in general; that's how accidents happen and people die or need emergency rescue. In 2022 there were over 3,500 mountain accident victims in Japan.

For sure! A simple plot is a strength. Any new author trying to get published and who knows what they’re doing will tell you that a story you want to be marketable should be able to summed up in one or two sentences. By keeping their plot simple, a writer can add new depth to traditional tropes, increasing interest by providing something familiar and fresh at the same time. The mangaka of Demon Slayer would have been ill-advised to make something overly complex for their first big series. Complicated, twisting stories definitely have their place and can be incredible, but they can be risky.

I'm sure you are going to love Demon Slayer. If you thought the Temple Demon fight was good just wait until you're more further in the show. If I would list up all the top fights, this fight wouldn't even be in there. Like you said the animation is absolutely stunning which makes sense because it's done by Ufotable, the same studio that also animated the Fate Series. When people talk about how basic the story is, they mean that it's like the main character becomes a demon slayer, gets stronger and fights stronger and stronger demons until the story is finished. It's the main story line but obviously it's not just that. The only thing you won't get are some deep plot twists and insane turning points but there are many very dark moments. Besides the animation also the character development, music, world building, action and also some comedy elements are awesome. The basic story is very well done and it proves that it doesn't have to be complicated to be a good show because in my opinion Demon Slayer is a 10/10.

There are several peaks for Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, but first watch episode 19, which is the first peak, and then decide whether you like it or not. One of the things I like about Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is that the main character doesn't suddenly become stronger. Even if it looks like you've pulled off a great move in the animation, it's only a slightly stronger attack that you used with the intent to die. The author of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba reportedly told an editor who told him to reduce his training sessions, saying, ``I don't think humans can become strong that quickly.'' As a result, time often skips by several months in the story, and in the next episode the broken bone has completely healed or the training has ended, but in the world of Demon Slayer, time actually goes by for quite a while.

Why don't foreign anime fans watch OP? I am Japanese. The average Japanese person watches the OP from the first episode as a matter of course, regardless of whether they have seen the original manga or not. Is the OP a spoiler? There is no such thing as a problematic spoiler. Rather, the way to enjoy anime is to look at the OP to see the characters and world that will appear in the future, and be excited to watch it. What do you think the OP is for?

Tanjiro's Job was mostly splitting wood and delivering charcoal as we saw in Episode 1, so there's where his base strength comes from. :D Also, I'd say basic is a poor description for Demon Slayer as it demerits the quality put in to the work. Competant Simplicity would be a more apt description. You know what you're in for, you know who is fighting who, and for what. And that's fine. A simple story told well is infinitely better than a complicated story told poorly.

Nicely said. The only thing that really irks me though is people referring to the story as "simple." There is virtually no such thing as a "simple" story, besides like literal children books with 3 words per page. Anything, even Middle Grade+, should not be called "simple". And that's mainly because literature as an artform is interpretive. You can peel back the layers of any story and find ample amounts of depth. I think the main issue is that people fallaciously equate the words "plot" and "story" to mean the same thing. Simple Plot ≠ Simple Story. Plot is literally just the "what happens" within a story. Story is the holistic word for EVERY aspect of a piece of literature. Kimetsu is absolutely filled with complexity and depth in its characters, themes, symbolism, philosophy, etc. I would agree that the plot is fairly simple (though I find literally every plot out of every story to be "simple," as simplicity is ingrained within the very nature of what plot is), but to say the story is simple is something I could never get behind.

Being basic does not mean bad... But it does mean that it won't be deep enough to keep you intrigued by it (story) from start to finish... But it is good enough to support the amazing animation, action and feelings the show brings forth...

I agree with a lot of the comments, just because it’s a straight forward story, it’s just like you said, it doesn’t mean it’s a bad anime. This is the 3rd anime i watched after AoT and Death Note about 2 years ago and is one of my favorite alongside HxH. Also the running with hands behind the back is an old school ninja/samurai way of running to conserve energy. They use their forward leaning body to propel themself forward naturally so the foot follows. It’s not fast as depicted in anime it’s just a method to conserve energy. You can look it up on youtube if you’re interested to know more but that’s the basic gist. Anime just likes to over exaggerate how fast the method of running is haha. Anyways hope you enjoy the anime as much as i did! Looking forward to your reactions to future eps/seasons cuz if you think the action and animation and OST thus far is this good 2 eps in… oh boy you’re in for a real treat the more you progress through the story! P.S. i have not started the newest season but definitely will be fun to watch with everyone once you catch up!

u are right about every question its not a simple story and the smell giyu sent tanjiro to urokodaki because urodaki can also smell emotions traps and everything like tanjiro

Demon Slayer may seem simple in terms of the story, but there are enough moments that tug at your heartstrings more than other animes. These are usually just small moments or gestures, but will be highlighted by the beautiful background music.

18:40 that's what im saying too!! I dont get why people hating it for being basic?? I mean, every hero story basically has pretty same idea. I just dont get it. As long as the story makes u really into it, that means that is a good story, idc anything other than that 🤷🏻♀️

The running thing with the arms which is usually called Naruto running was actually tested and found to be more advantageous than normal running and actually resulting in better performance. Yet like with granny shots being the best shots in basketball athletes refuse to do it because it looks silly and they might get made fun of.

It also helps prevent accidents when running with weapons. When running across the battle field with a sword in hand, you want the weapon behind or to the side so you don’t cut yourself in you stumble.

I don't understand people who say that the story is basic too, most things are a basic story and that doesn't make them bad, many successes are from a 'basic' story. The mistake is comparing animes, comparing with one that has a more elaborate story, I think that is very childish. Anyway, I love demon Slayer and i have the MOST FUN watching is in my top 5 favorite animes.

Running with hand at the back helps build up speed in running cause instead of forcing your arms to move you let them free and lean down a little so your posture kind of helps to penetrate through the air hence your speed increases and there is less air pressure tackling you. Its effecrive in real life as well

18:55 It’s a shonen anime. People complain way too much. Especially now. It may have been fair to say it relies heavily on the animation and action in season 1 (I like season one) but it gets better every season. People who say the story lacks are wrong. 21:90 You couldn’t walk up a mountain after running for hours carrying a person on your back though lol Tengu masks are a well known tradition in Japan. They appear in many anime. Naruto, gintama, etc. And Naruto might not have been the first anime to ever do the run with hands behind the back thing, but it IS the reason why you see it in anime today. Also demon slayer is definately modern. I think season 5 just started. It hasn’t come to Netflix yet so I haven’t seen it (Crunchyroll will never get 1¢ from me since they got rid of the option to watch free with ads, cutting off thousands or millions of fans who can’t afford to pay)

I know you will enjoy this. The first season is the longest with 26 episodes. But with all these questions you have, will be answered with each episode. But one of the abilities he has is a great sense of smell. Nezuko does have many abilities too, but you will see as you keep watching. I never watched the Japanese version. I just watched the English one on Netflix

@hereforonereason58206 ай бұрын
Yeah, Demon Slayer being basic is NOT an indication of its quality. Star Wars is Basic. Lord of The Rings is basic. It's basic in the sense that it's "Good Vs. Evil, grow stronger, meet friends, defeat the bad guy, save the day" without much in the way of moral or logistical complexity. It just does this genre of anime's version of that kind of story REALLY well. There's the Bruce Lee quote "I fear not the man who has practiced 1000 punches, I fear the man who has practiced ONE punch 1000 times", this show is that. It's not doing a ton of complex storytelling, but it's laser focusing on the things it IS doing so much that it's great anyway. Tanjiro and the rest of the cast are so vibrant and likeable, the pacing is some of the best I've ever seen in anything NO time is wasted here, all the fights are weighty and tense and thematically relevant to the current part of the story, the animation is really clean and the art is vibrant and beautiful, the stakes are perfectly clear and well established. There's not a big twist on the shounen battle anime formula here. The closest thing TO a twist is that they're using swords instead of their fists or magic blasts or whatever. It's just a really REALLY high quality anime of this type. Tanjiro is Luke Skywalker, Urokodaki (mask guy) is Obi Wan, and that's pretty indicative of what we're in for. Also "Why does everyone in anime run with their hands behind their back?" Why do people paint flames on their cars? Because it makes them faster and it looks cool as FUCK!
