GOTHAM KNIGHTS GAMEPLAY - MASSIVE PREVIEW - 17 HUGE DETAILS
Gotham Knights is no doubt one the most anticipated games of 2022. But we don’t know much about the game. Or, do we? I examined tons of interviews, articles, and reports and I found plenty of information about the world you’ll explore, the RPG mechanics, the co-op and more. Now, in this preview, focus on gameplay rather than story. Plus I try to share details that come directly from the developers, and that weren’t obvious from watching the official DC trailers and gameplay overview. So without further adieu, I hope you’ll join me as I look at 19 cool details about Gotham Knights.
The City Will Be Split Into 5 boroughs
One detail I’m surprised WB Montreal hasn’t talked about more is that their version of Gotham City will be split into five boroughs. Unfortunately, we don’t know much beyond that. Which boroughs will they be? How big are they? Will each one feature a separate supervillain? What we do know, based on a post in the PlayStation Blog is that these boroughs will be home to multiple criminal factions, and that they’re inspired not from the Gotham seen in the Arkham games, but from versions of Gotham seen in various comics, TV shows, and movies. And based on a quote in the same post from Gotham Knights Creative Director Patrick Redding, players can expect to discover “places and locations that are iconic, that have history.” Basically, it sounds like Bat fans will feel right at home exploring Gotham Knights, even if they won’t be doing it as The Dark Knight.
The map will be fully explorable from the start
Rather than force players into one area of the map early on, Gotham Knights will let you explore any of it’s 5 boroughs from the start of the game. That is to say, according to the developers, there will be no level gating. Instead, enemy and boss levels will keep pace with yours. As they do, they’ll gain new abilities and present new challenges, but they’ll never be so overleveled as to limit your exploration. Here’s what Gotham Knights executive producer Fleur Marty had to say on the topic. “There’s no level gating of any kind in the game, so from the get-go the whole open world is accessible to you and you won’t be in a situation where you would like, venture to part of the city and you realize you can’t go there because everybody’s so overpowered compared to you. It’s more the leveling of the player and of the enemies. Think of it more as a sliding scale that allows us to introduce and present new challenges to the players as they come back to the same areas of the city, and we’re introducing new mechanics, and maybe new types of enemies in the faction that they’ve already encountered, but there is absolutely no level gating.” It’s also worth noting that, in the gameplay showcase, it was also confirmed that even bosses will level up as you do, and that fighting a boss at, say, level 5 will be much different than fighting a boss at level 15. It even sounds like they might gain entirely different attacks as they level up. Pretty cool.
Gotham will be more populated than in the Arkham games
If you look back at the Arkham games, they each had a plot device that allowed for Gotham City to be almost completely devoid of regular citizens. For example, if memory serves, in Arkham Knight, Gotham had been evacuated. But in Gotham Knights, you’ll see citizens walking the streets, in traffic, running errands, and taking the train home. In an interview with Game Informer, Marty said this is due partly to the fact that the game’s plot takes place over several months, not just one night. “It’s not a game that takes place over just one night, in that kind of deserted city. This is a vast open world city and it takes place over many nights of crime-fighting. You are going to encounter the citizens of Gotham City as they try to go about their business.”

Dude, thank you for this video! This is so much better than the usual unsubstantiated speculation videos I see a lot of people covering this game! Also, given the characters' historical designs, I'm thinking that Nightwing and Redhood were the "parkour" characters the game was talking about. Their movement will likely be similar to, say, Talion from Shadow of War/Shadow of Mordor, but with the addition of the grappnel launcher.

I’m just scared of the RPG elements of this game. I like the Arkham franchise because it was never about leveling up or gaining strength or something. It was simply either you unlock a few new things or you get better

It looks like the way the leveling system works is it will change the way all the enemies fight as they level up. This makes it better so we aren't fighting the same guy the same way everytime. Kinda like that infamous Mr. Freeze fight.

Compare it to Dark souls even though I hate to do this. You want to get stronger and have more abilities and more effective combat strategies to survive in a fight. But leveling up also boosts the enemy up a bit. Thus making it more challenging. Ninja gaiden does this as well. Same with dmc. Except in those games it's unlocked weapons and abilities and progression. That's the point of an rpg or straight up action game. You get powerful but you don't get op. It's always balanced as all games should.

Everytime these games go multiplayer they always suck and never become what they once were. Thank god it’s not multiplayer. If there is going to be DLC the number 1 thing I would like to see is the inclusion of a Star City map with Green Arrow and Black Canary as added hero characters with Dark Archer, Onomatopoeia and Richard Dragon as villains. Its criminal we never got a depiction of Star City in video game form in the years Arrow was on the air. They could treat it exactly like the extra map that was included in Ghost of Tsushima Directors Cut. It would be awesome to see another prominent city besides Gotham as DLC.

I feel like Green Arrow and Black Canary as DLC characters are a bit of a reach, given that the focus so far has been on Batman's successors. If I'm expecting any characters as post-launch content, it would be the rest of the extended Batfamily, like Batwoman (since Kane is referenced as the new police comissioner), Stephanie Brown or maybe even Catwoman. I wouldn't really expect Damian Wayne, since he probably isn't around if Tim is still the main Robin. I don't even feel like DLC characters are fully on the table, since the quote suggesting there could be in the video here was from 2020. Games development focus can shift massively and features can be dropped as the work is put in. Maybe some content is too time-consuming to be fully integrated and they don't have the resources to get it made, or they change their mind about it fitting with the game.

I can't wait for this game, batfamily is absolutely one of my favourite. I hope there is dlc content. I would kill to play as Duke Thomas. When i saw him become the signal i was so happy, there isnt very many black batfamily characters but when they give him a yellow suit (my favourite colour) and a pair of kamas ( my 2nd favourite weapon after sai) i feel in love. Other characters it terms of unique game play combat wise batwing, Spoiler, orphan or Damien and huntress come to mind all having different weapons. Never mind flying as batwing. I know people hate games as a service. But i dont mind them, i love the idea of continuing and get more characters and story.

@@jdot634 So do I in comba twhen playing RPG's I lke seeing enemies health bars it helps me figure out where to strike. The fact that they're trying a more RPG route is what' sgot me more interested in this. There aren't many if any superhero type games that use an RPG formula. I lik eRPG's and in general I hav eenjoyed plent yof superhero games over the years so the fac tthey're tryin ga wa yt omix the 2 togethe rin this game I think is cool. This year is definitely looking good for those of us who enjo yRPG's wha twith Forspoken coming in May and Hogwart's Legacy coming towards the end o fthe year as well. This an dthose 2 aer the games I have my eye on for this year.

Thats not gonna happen as they(WB) are most likely deep into the development stage that changing gameplay from an RPG sponge fest to predator/freeflow would set them many steps back and it would to the media seem as if a Batman game cant be done without Rocksteady's freeflow

the issue I had with the Arkham games was how all characters played exactly the same due to the rhythmic/free flow nature of combat. Hopefully, as this deviates from that, each character feel unique.

I just hope they dont ruin the combat. Free flow was iconic, and changed the gaming industry. And felt like batman. I just hope it's good, but I'm ready for something new.

The only problem I’m thinking there’ll be is batgirl and robin are both basically Batman to a tee, more so batgirl she’s basically Batman w a baton, so I’d assume her move set will be similar to Batman but u never know

For this one game, I'm hoping he is. Though I'm not a huge Batman fan, I understand that he should be alive in games that start and focus on Batman, but not for this game.

Looks great but I’m not so sure I like how the enemy gets harder as you level up. I hate it when games do this. What is the point of getting stronger as a character when the enemies are just getting harder? To me it takes away the feeling of progressing into a true super hero fantasy. Anyone else feel this way?

Hate level scaling, just don't feature levels if enemies are going to keep pace.. The whole point of leveling up is to become more powerful, with enemies following that power increase the difference is negligible or in some cases make the game a boring grind. Not everything has to have a levelling system..

@@carminedies3481 I don't count Arkham as that was more Dick 2.0 with a bit of Damian thrown in there. I didn't get Tim from him. In the DCAU he's pretty much written out so they could focus on Damian. The lego games are fun but not really riveting for story. In Titans he's not a Dick clone this time but a Miles Morales clone. So I don't count that as Tim either Maybe I could have worded it better by saying Tim is undermined and underappreciated as a character in his own right. Edit: I wouldn't be entirely opposed to Damian in the game but NOT at the expense of Tim. They're not interchangeable.

I have high hopes for the game but I’m worried about the whole damage numbers and health bars thing and enemies being punching bags. Really liked how the Arkham games did it where regular enemies just took a certain number of hits and only enemies with health bars were the main villains which usually just had mechanics to defeat them
