I don't think it was the ice that caused Riddler to "retreat" into Nygmas mind, but it was this moment. Riddler was absolutely convinced he had the upper hand and was going to finally kill Penguin in his mind, but then it turns out not only had Penguin unloaded the gun, but he had literally predicted everything Riddler was going to do up until that moment. Riddler had been completely outsmarted in every fashion, and he genuinely felt defeated.

its also what oswald said just before this. the moment at which edward got his identity as the riddler was when he killed oswald. since oswald is alive, that moment technically didnt exist. he wanted to kill him in earnest this time, but didnt get to, so technically the riddler doesnt exist. funny how ozzie warned ed this was gonna happen, just liked hed warned him before that he was gonna change if he killed him.
