I think cheating in chess also involves some kind of psychological problem. I play a lot in lichess in anonymous mode when I'm practicing opening lines and found out that many of my oponnents used engine and one can think that there is no point in that. Those are unrated games and you don't get anything from that, but I think it is a mental or emotional issue.

Anonymous ratingless games on lichess are cancer. Either you get paired with a complete noob, or you get crushed by stockfish. Nothing inbetween.
@DavetheGrueАй бұрын
@@adomaskuzinas2137 I played blitz that way and didn't find that; as an intermediate player the field was a little better than I was but not a lot. I quit because it was cancer for a different reason: poor sportsmanship. I couldn't find a way to turn off takeback requests in anonymous games, and people would quit without resigning if you didn't let them takeback mistakes (not just misclicks). That and all the stall-quitting, which sucks even in blitz. "Dude, it's anonymous! There's no rating. Why not just resign?"
@cerealhit555Ай бұрын
No, you're just facing people who wouldn't play chess if they couldn't cheat. Same goes in video games, a large group of people only play games because they can cheat. If they couldn't cheat or would actually get banned for it, they wouldn't play at all.

But the point is that it's very hard to do so. If you raise the threshold (like you only decide to ban one when you're 99.99% sure he's cheating), a lot of cheaters will escape; if you lower the threshold (like you ban someone when you're 95% sure), a lot of innocent players will be banned. BTW, in case you are interested, if we have an algorithm with the correct probably being x, then even if like Fabiano thought, 20% of the players are cheating, the chance of an accused "cheater" to be really cheating will be x/(4-3x). This means that even in this scenario, using an algorithm with 99% (0.99) accuracy, around 96% of accused ones are really cheating.

It's good to have an empathetic voice in this. If you're right and the cheating is money-motivated because he's struggling there's an important discussion to have that will both help people *and* help get rid of some cheating.

In terms of Kramnik my thoughts are: even if he catches every person cheating, but accuse 99 people falsely per each actual cheater, still Kramnik has a failure rate of 99%. A person won’t cross a bridge if there is 99% chance of it breaking, so why a trust a person with the same record. Additionally, just because you’re a chess world champion doesn’t give you the right to bully other chess players.

I applaud Levi for making one of his main concerns the wellbeing of Shevchenko. It's far too easy to join into a feeding frenzy, which is only ever about those partaking feeding their own egos at other people's expense. So, bravo to Levi for not being that kind of person. Cheating needs to be taken seriously in chess in order for the game not to be brought into disrepute with all the damage that can do. Taking it seriously means doing the real work of prevention, detection and deterence, and not engaging in endless conspiracy theorising. Here's hoping that FIDE can defy their own history and that of most sports governing bodies and haul their snouts out of the corporate trough just long enough to protect the interests of the game for its players and fans. That said, I won't be holding my breath expecting that to happen.
