It's really interesting that training at the IM/GM level is so different. They're not looking at tactics or preparation, they're looking at strategy above and beyond particular games. Profound tactics come like basic algebra to a college level math student. This is so cool. And the way it shows on Levy's face at 20:30 his realization that it's as much emotional intelligence as it is intelectual intelligence or memory. I relate a lot, Levy. Keep it up, the video for the first GM norm will break youtube

Coach Arturs seems to be the perfect coach for Levy - empathetic, motivating and insightful. He also tells him what he doesn't want to hear (sacrifices). The number of nay sayers is probably a very small fraction of those rooting for him. The loudest of them all however is Levy's own inner voice. I hope his self talk improves significantly and he's able to overcome his biggest weakness to be able to achieve his goal of becoming a GM.

I read this book called Psycho-cybernetics. Part of the book refers to the mental block people have when chasing goals. Many pitchers couldn't cross 90 mph or something. They changed the framing of their thinking, and suddenly a ton of pitchers in that group started crossing that mark. I think Levy could benefit from that mental work.

I don't see how changing mental thinking about crossing 90mph would change anything. I dont believe a single pitcher thinks about it, when there's so many other more important things going on during the match and the throw. In practice, sure, you can isolate for one thing and try going for record speeds, and if you overthink it, then sure, it can become a hindrance. But over all, i think that BS. I looked up the book, and yeah, it's one of those wrong self help books from the 60's...

There’s a lot of BS self help stuff out there, but having the growth mindset and reframing can be literally life changing. Also, the task was throwing over 90 mph - at least according to the comment. It’s helpful to focus on one specific thing at a time.

This type of content is my favorite kind. Watching you do well and/or get better is always most interesting. You talked with Arturs about something I have always wondered when he mentioned not seeing repeated positions. I’ve always wondered if the approach of identifying your opponent’s strengths and then trying to pick a line to surprise them so no one knows what is happening is the best option. I’m not qualified to have an opinion, but in the video it sounded like you both came to the same conclusion that trusting your opening knowledge and believing you are equal or superior from an opening perspective is something you can implement. I actually love these videos, especially when GM Neiksans participates. It's one thing to hear GM opinions in a random YT video and totally another thing to hear ideas, thoughts, opinions in a proper lesson. There are a lot of things to learn out of this video and I hope you go on with many more.

Tbh, he doesn’t look that engaged. It’s a big commitment. And it this point in his life, he actually may not have the time to commit. And honestly, does he really want the stress? He’s already a made man and pretty wealthy. I hope he goes for it. But I’m not sure his heart is in it. It causes him insane anxiety. His body chemistry may not be up to the task.

I have watched and liked your videos at random, but I wouldn't have called myself a fan... until I watched this video. This is by far my favourite series. I am super invested. I think you sharing and exploring your weaknesses shows great strength! Especially this video where you start to focus and get into the details. Keep it up Levy. You have inspired me to tackle some of my own demons head on and level up in my career (and to play more chess).
