where I used to work we got a shipment of some really corrosive primer, the bafoons at the shipping company were lucky the manufacturer had included a plastic liner to their cans as the thing very nearly was ruptured and would have surely ignited the packaging. You'd think Flamable and Corrosive warning labels would be enough for them to take a second and maybe not run the box over with a truck, but nope. this thing was packed in like a thick paint can, in a cardboard cradle, inside a box, inside another box filled with bubble wrap and the can was still crushed and burst open

Well it's his suit of armor. I can imagine that some knights or men at arms of the time period had preferences that differed from the norm. Lloyd is a rather unique fellow, and it's not like he's gotten it to illustrate exactly what the average gothic armor looked like, he's gotten it made because he simply wants it.

You can't look up because the skirt at the back of the helmet stops against your upper back (which would be armoured). You would be grateful for that if a lance or other heavy weapon hit you full in the face. It would stop your head snapping back and breaking your neck. Many motorsports people wear neck protectors that perform a similar role.

Lindy I actually very much like your approach of having an own armor made "your way", like shown with that helmet and rate it very realistic! All those people criticising, saying "one has to have an armour that looks exactly like the ones in historic drawings, bla bla" forget one thing: Just because we know a few hundred examples (surviving armour, text and drawings) of how medieval armour looked like, doesn't mean that every armour of the hundreds of thousands of soldiers throughout the medieval time looked exactly like that. That's like if our successors in 200 years would only find 1 buried nokia cellphone and thus automatically assume we in 2018 ALL had a nokia phone and it was the only brand and style existing. Just because they don't know any better, doesn't mean that's correct. Reality is, we probably just know a tiny fraction of the armour that actually existed, so it is more than likely that "mixed and matched" was rather common - for personal taste reasons but also for sure for financial reasons, like repairing battle-damaged armour quickly and cheaply by not sticking to the original elaborate design, ending up in a "customized" armour that looks nowhere like many of the survived (often never battle used) "parade" armours we know.

IMO the armorer is one of the more entertaining people to have on your channel. Many of the other guests you have on you just get a back and forth going of "Ah, yes, but...", "That may be true, however..." And that just doesn't happen the same way with this guy. The videos of you getting your armor fitted are really good, don't be shy with that sort of footage. The Blacksmith when making your sword I think is also a very complimentary person to have on.

Unfortunately, with the type of helmet he has, if he raised the main view slit higher, he has even worse visibility lower. Remember that this is designed for a man on a horse vs others same level, or below him. Once he straps it on, he hopefully can pivot it down enough, but these helmets compromise visibility for protection. Personally, I would put some breath holes to make eyebrows above the eye-slit for *some* upwards visibility, but it prolly compromised the durability.

As cool and obviously expensive as it is to have armor made, I think I would rather have a non-historical fantasy armor that would be more mobile, lighter in less critical spots, and a better helm with much more visibility! From experience, I can say that you needn't hesitate to add padding even though it will raise the ocular off-level from your eyes. The ocular/s actually SHOULD sit higher than your actual eyes, if only by perhaps a quarter inch, since a fighting stance will usually tilt your head slightly downwards anyway both for protection and for being able to view opponents' body movements. Otherwise, you will find yourself tilting your head back while in a fighting stance (which throws off your balance and exposes your neck more) in order to see ahead of you.

I am personally a big fan of sallet designs, but I really love that you went out to get your own design in a similar way you would imagine a man at arms/ knight to do back in the days. I think it adds uniqueness to your armour. You just need a beige cloak (which will be taken off in combat obviously). If I ever save up the money to get myself a harness, I will definitely be designing my own helmet for sure!

I think a lot of people don't realise that these different types and categories of armour didn't really exist at the time. There were definitely styles but each armourer would have their own unique form and the lords that purchased the armour would sometimes have specific requirements for said armour.

You could come back next year and we should have an 1153 Model P, which is more or less the same but we’ll be adding an improved airbag system. I've always figured those extremely long sabatons must have been a way of ensuring that your feet didn't come out of the stirrups during a melee -- or rather, if they did, they didn't come all the way out and it was easy just to slide your foot back in with those long pointy sabatons guiding the way. That actually makes sense when you figure the knight it wearing armor and helmet that will make it difficult to look down sometimes. On the other hand, being smooth and tapering to a point, they shouldn't catch, so if you got knocked off your horse, your foot should slide all the way out, rather than catching in the stirrup so you get dragged. And I believe I have read most of these armors had the long sabatons held on with pins that allowed their removal -- I know I've seen an armor of the Emperor Maximilian I (circa. 1485) that has them made this way. So if you did need to fight on foot, you could remove them.

Purely hypothetical but if I were to fight a dragon, I wouldn't wear much in the way of armor. It would only slow me down because speed would hopefully be my advantage. The fire would cook me alive no matter what, the bite would go right through my armor and crunch me. Maybe put on some leather armor with padding so I'll be more protected from being tossed around. And then attach a bunch of fish hooks for when it inevitably eats me I can tear up it's throat as one final middle finger.

Not all *Armets* open like this. Some have essentially a double visor, where the first layer gives you more vision and removing the second layer allows you to get out of the helmet. Also the *pointy sabatons* were bound in an upwards curving configuration, but that strapping hasn't survived on any armour I've ever seen.

This is known as a Close Helm and they are fundamentally different from sallets and were predominantly used (although not exclusively) in different centuries, with the Armet being an iconic 15th century helmet, whilst the Close Helm developed out of sallets in the late 15th century when the bevors were riveted onto the same hinge-pin as the visor (you can see these on the ca. 1480-1500 Helmschmied sallets), this then went on to be used with armet looking designs (although they usually have a larger face-plate, a sort of built-in version of the large protective plate you strap onto your armet) and whilst the armet transformed into the Maximilian armet as well as retained its original design (although with increasingly large face-holes), the close-helm was there to say and overtook the armet in popularity around the 1520's.

In Switzerland one knew also the occupation of the "bather".😉 And yes, I think the word "bather"(>someone who bathed and treated other people) would also fit perfectly in English. In English I would prefer the term "spa", which is more precise in this case, than "bathhouse"(>preamble). Because the people went there for healing and personal hygiene. These "bathers" were the forerunners of modern physicians.🤓 The treatment methods were not the best at that time, therefore we know the terms "Kurpfuscher" or "Quacksalber" in German, both of which mean a "quack", a "bad medic" or a "bad doctor".🤣
