I loved hearing your take on this! I read Northhanger Abbey a few months ago and had a fun time with it (and I was so amused that she basically was buddy reading gothics with the other girl). I can't handle melodrama or else I'd be tempted to pick up Udolfo too, but I really loved hearing about your experiences with the other Radcliffe book!

Thank you! I had so much fun both reading and filming it. And yes, she was buddy reading it! I can imagine that all of Racliffe's books were similarly buddy read at that time - and that young ladies were being urged by parents to pick up others books which 'improve the mind' :D But yes, the melodrama can be a turn off..and Udolfo is a much longer novel so I'm happy I picked this one instead, even if it was by chance :)

I haven't read any Radcliffe yet but I loved Austen's irreverent and funny take on the Gothic novel in Northanger Abbey. 😊

Ann Radcliffe is now on my classic TBR. I have never read any of her books. Jane Austen my #1 favorite. Northanger Abbey is one of my favorites. Of course Pride & Prejudice is my #1.

I think it is worth reading at least one of her books just to see how later authors were inspired and to het an idea of where the gothic genre originated from 😊 Good to meet another Jane Austen fan, I have read all of her novels apart from Mansfield Park, I might keep that for Jane Austen July this year 😊

I haven't read Ann Radcliffe yet, but I was aware the melodrama is pretty extreme. I still plan to read one of her books someday though, so I appreciate your thoughts.

I'm happy you enjoyed the video. I looked at The Sicilian Romance more in terms of what it represented...the birth of a genre, and that made the whole experience much more enjoyable 😊 The melodrama was over the top though! It's definitely worth reading at least one of her books 😊

I read The Mysteries of Udolpho just because of Northanger Abbey but I just found it way too melodramatic.

A Sicilian Romance was also full of melodrama, it reminded me of the Spanish telenovelas I used to watch growing up. Way over the top! 😊

Just bought Ann Radcliffe, Sicilian Romance, Oxford world’s Classics edition. I don’t know if it’s faulty, the font is different and smaller than all my other OWC books and the margins are a lot bigger. Is your copy like this?
