I disagree. Faith can be built up by evidence - which includes personal experiences of God, but can also include apologetics arguments, like the way the Resurrection of Jesus Christ is the best explanation of all the historical facts surrounding his death and empty tomb.

Faith is the gift of God the power of God unto salvation, when we are born of light we are given the righteousness of the Christ the spirit of the Christ, it's not some contract, it's not some mental understanding, nor is it imputed, it is imparted, it is a living spirit, those who fail to believe do not possess this spirit, this is why they keep falling away or keep doubting because they do not possess faith, it's not a matter of diligently studying the scriptures and being reminded every day of the Cross, the true believers do not doubt they simply believe, I know those who believe and very rarely read the scriptures, I know those who read the scriptures all the time and find it very hard to believe, I know those who know scripture because they've read it in a book, I know those who know scripture because it comes out of their mouth because it is in their heart and they have never read the book, it is the indwelling of the spirit as it is written, if you do not have the Christ within you you do not belong to him, true Christians do not suffer with doubt, Thomas doubted because he was not born of light, and then when Pentecost came Thomas was born of light and never doubted again, blessed are those who believe who have not seen because these are the ones who are born of God, you do not know what you were talking about,

We have all been blessed with a capacity for faith, repentance, love, and free will. God gave us these gifts impartially in His grace and sovereignty. He is just. This is why even the worst scoffers you know are able to be loving to others, the good in us is not from us, God is the source of EVERY bit of goodness/kindness etc. in us.

So when they saw him they were all amazed because of their disbelief, as it is written,
