It was just taking ownership of the armed forces with battle medition with his private army including super star destroyer and some experimental super weapon (few in number) added to the mix. It wasnt' he purposoly sucking all the imperial army and navy to form some secret force and placing a dark side puppets such as snoke and kylo ren just just to have a army of oversized star destroyer with death star canon and a group of cultist take over and rebranding...

They are really unique all Disney did was regurgitate nostalgia goyslop in a rehashed Empire 2.0 and since it was Palpatine it might as well just been the Empire. The NJO did something also unique in where we see The New Republic and the Imperial Remnants being opposing factions unite against this larger and grotesque threat!! The Yuuzhan Vong Wars cemented such Legacy after its end too not to mention from both powerful Sith like Darth Krayt and Darth Caedus being molded for the next stories to come. Overall it was great not to see the freakin Empire and Stormtroopers for once and also the Sith kinda taking a back seat on this one until the epic comeback with LOTF with Lumiya striking back and Darth Caedus and in FOTJ we get The Lost Tribe Of The Sith and Darth Krayt.

The Vong are just 40k aliens that got lost in the Warp and wound up in Star Wars. They have that level of goofy-edginess. 40k has a "charmingly goofy edginess" baked into it front to back. I think it was unavoidable really. Considering when they were written and how Star Wars EU had escalated so far at that point, the only place Star War left to go was hyper-violent-hyper-alien-edginess that kicked off with killing off an OT core cast with Chewie to show out of the gate that "No one is safe". They have their own charm in that way.

Species like Vong and Ssi-Ruuk, species that use different technologies, that freaked up culture and stuff. Stuff that works on SOUL ENERGY? Hell yeah. Kinda hot take: The First Order could've been good had they basically been Imperial jihadists using guerilla warfare tactics against the New Republic. Also the Sith Eternal would fit better as a subversive cult of Sith worshipers who weasel their way into positions of power and influence so they can overthrow the galaxy when the time is right instead of just "First Order but bigger". Make them the main villains of a cloak and dagger spy thriller series/sub franchise (kinda like the Shadows of the Empire multimedia project from the 90s).

I think Jacen’s radicalization of the Republic in the Legacy of the Force novels could’ve been a great blueprint for what Snoke should’ve been. A charismatic leader radicalizing the Empire-sympathetic factions of the New Republic into an attempt to return to the Empire of old would’ve been a way better villain than “Palpatine again.”

So what I’m getting from this is: Legends had a bunch of silly moments & storylines, but they weren’t afraid of experimenting. Edgy technophobic extragalactic aliens, soul-powered dinosaur tech, eldritch abominations contained by black holes, giant gravity guns, possession by Sith ghosts, etc etc. - Not every idea stuck the landing, but at least they took the leap. A far cry from Disney Canon, whose first ideas were “Empire 2.0 vs Rebellion 2.0, just with black paint jobs” and then performed damage control with “copying the most popular ideas from Legends”. :/

Tahiri kinda gets dragged through the mud from NJO on honestly. I didn't mind her split personality with Rina, it just is a very tropey thing in sci fi in general where the military or someone gets transformed or infected and becomes a weapon that helps the heroes achieve victory by overcoming their transformation or other self. In Tahiri's case it seemed to be a metaphor for her trying to overcome her grief with Anakin, only for Jacen to manipulate that in LotF books. Science Fiction/Fantasy has a lot of silly tropes in general, like remember the Piggies from the Ender'l books or the Space Vampires from Peter Watts' Blindsight? That is part of the charm. Its why I love the Ferengi 😂.

Not that it was ever flawless - far from it - but Legends had a lot more going for it. The wide variety of stories present allowed it to be presentable to a wide and diverse audience. FFS, it's from Legends that we got Thrawn in the first place. Yes, the Vong are ultimately silly and cheesy. Yes, they are essentially 40K making it to Star Wars. Yes, they were after Legends had more-or-less written themselves into a corner. And yes, they were a welcome addition despite - or maybe because of - what they are. Is it wrong to enjoy that stuff?

Fun fact: The Vong were not necessarily meant to be quite so edgy. Doman Shai were the first Vong to invade the galaxy, and they have worship of pain as a quirk. The idea was for each Domain to have their own cultural differences, and that some other Domains might think the Shai pain thing was weird. Later authors in the NJO did not get the memo, and integrated pain-worship into all parts of Vong culture, not just Domain Shai.

On the Yuzzahn Vong: I've said this before, but it may be more obvious to people now that 'Baldur's Gate 3' has been out: I remember reading a interview with the writer of the first Yuzzahn Vong War novel, "Vector Prime', R. A. Salvatore. When asked about how he came up with the idea for the Vong, he admitted that his experiences with Tabletop Roleplaying Games did play a part in their creation. For those who don't know, Salvatore wrote several novels set in the 'Forgotten Realms' setting of the Dungeons and Dragons TTRPG. In that game, there is a race of people known as the Githyanki: An evil race of tall, lean beings on something of a 'Jihad' against all others, on behalf of their Undead Queen. The similarities of looks and actions of the Githyanki and the Vong seem obvious to me, particularly considering what Salvatore said about their 'inspiration' (I would say 'Legally Distinct' enough to not be sued by Wizards of the Coast). Don't get me wrong: I LOVE the Vong, and have even thought about introducing them into a 'Spelljammer' Campaign ('Fantasy Space Opera'), as the 'Third Race of Gith' 😅

Star Wars: Legends galaxy feels so much more... vibrant than the KKCanon. We had the Rebels go right from Endor to teaming up with some Imperials to fight soul-eating aliens... then a couple decades of whack-a-mole with Imperial Warlords. The Dark Fleet Crisis was AMAZING, everything that Timothy Zhan touched was great. Then later on after AotC released, we got a bunch more cultural stuff. Mandalorians got fleshed out... but then Dave Filoni made what was IMO one of his worst moves: Retconning Mandalorians into a pacifist culture with martial history and fringe. We had the Yuuzahn Vong war that took up a lot of my childhood reading. It was so amazing, the Vong were TERRIFYING. It felt like the real end of the star wars setting, and it kinda was. The galaxy after the Vong war was so different politically. And they weren't afraid to kill off characters at important moments! The entire Vong war was set up by killing Chewbacca in *book one* of the series! Towards the end, another major char died... and it was just so amazing. We had so many interesting stories. But I'll admit some of it was WEIRD. Like when Han and Chewbacca showed up halfway through a zombie story for no discernable reason. Of course, no star wars legends book will ever beat Splinter of the Minds Eye for 'Is this really star wars?'. It was the first, and was released before half the core lore (the force, kyber crystals, Luke and Leia's relationship) were defined or known. Now? Everything is scripted according to an algorithm of 'what will get enough people to watch that we can sell toys around the holidays?'.

My philosophy with Star Wars books in general, unless they're written by Timothy Zahn, or the Dark Fleet Crisis or some such, is to not set my expectations too high. I love Star Wars as a universe (galaxy) and so I always enjoy it, but let's be honest some very famous Star Wars writers aren't actually that great. Micheal A. Stackpole wrote the X-Wing series among others, which is pretty good, but he sucks ass at writing relationships. When I picked up the Dark Tide Duology I didn't pay attention to the author, but I knew who it was as soon as Jacen and Danni Quee started talking. If I want deep storytelling, I pick up ASOIAF or the Witcher or some such. That being said, I quite like the NJO. I'm not quite through because nineteen books are expensive, but I think the Yuuzhan Vong were a great idea. Much needed change of pace after fighting Imperials for nineteen years. Now they're an ally under Pellaeon, a phenomenal character.

It's basically Star Wars according to Samuel Huntington, and it gets really interesting. I view the rather abrupt switch to reconciling with subversive elements in Vong society as a real-world demanded response to the US wars in the Middle East. That was why I refuse to acknowledge anything after the NJO. Darth Caduceus does a tremendous disservice to Traitor by Matthew Stover. I had issues with Star by Star by Troy Denning, then he ends up being the primary author after the NJO, to the point I call the post-NJO the Denningverse. The Denningverse ends up being connected to Mortis from TCW, which is another thing I didn't care for. This is why I was going to have a problem regardless of the Legends announcement, I was dissatisfied with the direction the EU was headed thanks to the post-NJO and TCW, but I was going to have a difficult time embracing the new timeline from a canon reboot unless it was really good.

I always had a very fond remembrance of the legends novels I read growing up in the '90s, but then I realized that I basically only read the X-wing series and the Zahn's original Thrawn trilogy plus the duology that came out years after, which I'm guess account for the creme de la creme of the franchise's novels. I tried to read the first NJO book a couple years after they started coming out and bounced right off of it -- the tone felt very different from those other ones I'd read. Black Fleet Crisis is the only other one I can remember getting through.

#AskEck 6:50 What exactly is a proper scaling of, for example, a Battle during the Warlord Era of Legends? What are these mistakes of scale and what do they look like in comparison to what should be expected from the scale of a Star Wars Ground or Space Battle during the latter stages of the Galactic Civil War and during the Warlord Era after Endor?

From memory the Yuuzhan Vong essentially evolved parallel to the primary galaxy so their technology was completely organic rather than synthetic. In practice all it mean was that they could do all the same things that we knew and recognised just with this corally aesthetic, which I am all for. It creates a technology vs nature type of conflict. Shame they misunderstood the sadomasochism aspect wasn’t supposed to be a feature for all of them, just that one clan.

Extragalactic, anti-tech, anti-Force, masochistic space Mongols are awesome and the Skywalker-Solo family of the New Jedi Order era will always be my favourite part of Star Wars chronology along with the Darth Caedus arc that followed it. I did find the Swarm War was weird and the Abeloth and Krayt continuity felt a bit too disconnected, it really felt like they played off the end of each story to move into the next, and keeping each story self-contained (a big problem with all SW content to this day). Disney messed up this era in Canon so bad and I stand by that, things would be better if they worked and adapted the Zahn books, NJO and Legacy into a continuous story for an actually universally agreeable Sequel Era. Anything would be better than the atrocious production quality and storytelling we get now.

That was my hope when Disney started making Star Wars. I really wanted the new canon would be a remix of the best Legends stories, while trimming out all of the fat. If only I knew how bad things were gonna get back then.

Were they edgy and cheesy? Yes. But there was something very unsettling about creatures that worked by different rules upturning the familiar galaxy that made them a great addition to the villains in terms of just shaking things up and putting the reader in a place of uncertainty.

Hey Justin its Alex! Long time sub. Would you do a deep dive? Something from legends like a play x play of jedi academy, the yu zon von invasion? the fall of one of the skywalkers (or solo) boys into the dark side to 'save' the galaxy? What I would love is a comparison / outline of Luke / Leia / Han in the Thrawn trilogy, then the yuzonvon invasion, and then in Fate of the Jedi. I truly believe a majority of us are more interested in a video 30+ min deep dive versus these (as of late) under 10 minute quick rants. A whole video of legends fate of jedi about just the planet of sith and all that, or the senate / leia / all the politics and intrigue involving the empire remnant post invasion involved in politics in the senate etc etc. Yours truly!

I read somewhere that, when they were conceptualizing the New Jedi Order series, they contemplated using the Sith species as antagonists before they decided to create the Yuuzhan Vong. I've always thought that they made a mistake there. The Sith would have fit much better into the overall Star Wars story, while retaining most of the strangeness of the Yuuzhan Vong. Anyway, I left the boat after Vector Prime, but I think fatigue was a factor even before that book.

After this sequel trilogy and the probable Rey film, what new era would you like to see after? As for me, I'm looking forward to seeing a Galactic Dark Age a few decades after Rey's death, similar to that of our Dark Age in which we had civilization and knowledge decline, rise of disease, corruption, with the Jedi and Mandalorians going through a Golden Age similar how the Middle East and Asia went through a Golden Age while Europe went through a dark age. We can have that for the Star Wars galaxy as a semi-reboot to everything. Would that be something you would be interested in or what new era would you like to see after the Rey Era? #AskEck
