Gotway Mten3 Tire & Tube Replacement

In this video, I show what I went through to replace the tube and tire on my Mten3. Not for the faint of heart ;-)

Glad you like the new tire. The trick to installing a new tire is use a lot of lube (glass cleaner like windex all around the bead inside and out) and when you are leveraging the last part of the bead make sure opposite side of tire bead is off the rim down around the center of the rim (stand on opposite side of the tire). I used bigger motorcycle spoons (biggest ones from Harbor Freight ~$5 each). Another observation, talc or baby powder is used between tube and the tire so tube won't pinch.

haha so fun watching you struggling to take that tire off... you have to push it down towards the middle of the rim, before puling it out, then it comes out pretty easier

One trick you can use to mount really stiff tricky tires like this is to use heavy duty cable ties around the tire and tube if you have one I used four for mine arrange 90° apart and tighten them down with a cable tie tightening tool. This allowed me to very easily work the bead over the rim and then cut the ties. I also put a small amount of lubricant on the rim a little bit of Dawn dish soap. It only took about 5 minutes to get the tire on this way but before that I was struggling trying to use my tire levers. The reason this tire is so difficult to use levers on is because the pedal hangers/axle is always in your way and you can never get proper leverage or position with all of them. I would say definitely use cable ties or take it to a shop who can deal with it.

Before you try to put the tube in, put a bit of air in it. Makes it less likely to puncture with your tire irons

Not only do you need to lube the bead, but on small tires it helps to get the opposite side of the bead into the groove in the center of the rim as you pry the other side on or off. The talc suggestion to keep the tube and tire from sticking together is a good one too, as well as to use good long handled tire spoons for more leverage. It's near impossible to get small tires on or off without getting the bead into the center groove of the rim though.

I'm getting ready to replace tubeless tire on my Mten3, Jason said using a heat gun to soften the tire really helps. Plus no tube to deal with. Wish me luck!

ElectricUnicycles tire separated and it’s giving me a little wiggle 290 miles. Rim is straight a new tire should fix it.

Hi Marty, Tubeless was not to hard to install, it nice because you don't have to worry about pinching tube. I placed the tire in the sink with hot water made it soft enough to install. I needed a extra set of hands to hold the tire in the rim, then used motorcycle tire irons popped right on. Remove all the valve core to get the tire to seat the first time then reinstall. I would not recommend installing slime on the tubeless, it was attacking the aluminum rim. I had to do a lot of clean up before the reinstall of new tire!! Take it easy, chat with you latter. Dave

Glad you had an easier time than me. I think I'd still prefer to spend $15. I'll probably go tubeless when this tube fails. They sell tubeless Slime and that's what I used in my Z10.

Hey Marty, Thanks for the video. Very helpful. Only question is that the tire you will use when you go tubeleyouss? I see it works great with a tube. I was not aware it could also be mounted tubeless. I guess it would need some kind of valve?

Yes, the new Mten3 tire is also tubeless. You do have to buy a new valve. A bit of Googling for Mten3 & Valve should locate some articles with explain the process and provide sources for the parts.

What about adding TUFFY STRIPS BETWEEN THE TUBE AND TIRE INSTEAD OF SLIME? WOULD THAT WORK ALSO? I have had very good results in a regular bicycle tire and corn starch to keep the two from rubbing. The newer Mten3 dont have tubes correct???

Certainly can't help. Most people don't do that because it's such a pain in the butt to remove the tire on the typical EUC. Yes, the Mten3 has been tubeless for a couple of years now.

Hey Marty! I've recently got an Mten3 and I absolutely love it, the only thing that I maybe like to change is the tire, since the wheel tends to jump around and cause wobble on paving stoned sidewalks that are plenty in my city. I found the exact same tire that you have here and was wondering - do you still like it more than the stock tire? Is it worth the upgrade? Does the wheel behave better on paving stones with this tire? Does it handle better, more like a MSX? Would love to hear your opinion on this!

Yes, I still prefer the new tire, but don't expect miracles, because it's still fundamentally a 10-inch tire. But I like the slightly better grip and the additional feedback from the ground.

yo Marty ? I just purchased a Tesla 1020w but the manual is written in Chinese. The funny thing is, they don't give me no instructions on how or if Im even charging my wheel correctly. on the stock charger, it has a red led light but I have no clue if weather or not it shuts down automatically or do I have to unplug it from wall manually. can you make a complete tutorial video ?

I was laughing as you were fighting with that tire. No. I wasn't making fun of you. You reminded me of EXACTLY what it feels like. I'm watching thinking, "I would pay someone $20 to install this tire. Watch them doing it. While smoking a cigarette. And... I don't even smoke. You won't believe me. But one of my wheels still has a flat tire. And it's been maybe 5 months. I DREAD replacing my tubes/tires.

marty, the Mten3's case seems similar to the Tesla. Have you done a tire replacement yet on the Tesla? I'm dreading the thought of it since I had difficulties removing the LED panels.

I have not yet had to open my Tesla. The Mten3 is the only wheel that I've had to replace the tube. Slime has kept all of my other wheels running.

You have too many wheels to worry about treads balding=]. Maybe that’s the solution to avoid changing a tire, get a bigger budget to keep buying new wheels!

Put tube into the tyre first, then install tyre onto the wheel. Tube must already have some pressure, not too much. This help to slide it between tyre and wheel.

Yes, I did that. Still didn't help me with this 10-inch tire. Fortunately the bike shop was able to do it for me.

No. They are sealed bearings. It really isn't an issue with EUC's.

I did. I do know how to change tires in general. It's just the 10-inch size that's very difficult. The bike shop did it for me, but took two people.
