Sarah, this was a great video. I love how you explained each step and your entire thought process in so much detail. Your camera angle painting the beach part was perfect because it was very helpful to watch you mixing as you talked about your color choices and and reasons for each step you took. This was a super helpful video. The coastline of Scotland is gorgeous and the combination of cliffs and ocean are stunning. Thanks so much for the video. I always look forward to them!

Enjoyed this very much! I'm just starting with gouache plein air (from watercolour) so this was helpful. We have a similar coastline here in Nova Scotia ("New Scotland"), only our sand is more of a cool grey instead of rosy. Lovely work on your spread - you captured it so well.

I really enjoy these process videos. Especially this one with the sound of the waves in the background. Should you do more videos like these? Yes, please! 😊🌊 I've just started drawing again after several years. I'm working to improve my drawing skills to eventually do paintings again. Watching you helps things crystalize in my mind and I get a few ideas I hadn't thought about before. Thanks for the inspiration 😊🙏

This was a beautiful video. I loved how you explained your color mixing choices, techniques for the cliff, water, and sand, and tips on working with gouche outside in the environment. These are all wonderful for a budding urban sketcher such as myself. I noticed you did an underwater shot! Your cinematic flow is certainly wonderful and I enjoy your mix of closeups, wide shots of the environment you paint as well as the aerials to give a sense of place. I hope you choose to do more of these in the future.

Thank you! Funny thing about the underwater…I dropped my phone while recording, freaked out, googled it, and discovered it’s rated to go underwater for a short amount of time (not super deep). So I said screw it, let’s get some more shots! Though I’m still paranoid about the salt water…probably won’t do that often.

Def want more videos like this! I'm watching this while drawing anatomy study. This is my fifth anatomy sketchbook. Your videos always encourage me to go outside and paint. So far, I did it twice and I can say it's really hard to make the right colour. Like, it could look fine on the field, but once you look at the painting at home, the colours are so off and muddy. And the values are just so wrong in so many spots 😭😭

I understand! This is very common. It’s why we call it training. We are literally training our eye to translate what we see in 3D with moving light to the paper. We also learn to make artistic choices along the way for a ‘pleasing’ result

I tried my first acrylic plain air today at Findhorn Beach, hated every second, people approaching, acrylic tubes I had were rock hard, felt like I’ve never painted before, only 2 years in but wow it was horrible. I doubt I will attempt it again, I wanted the sand to swallow me up.
@SarahBurnsStudio
@SarahBurnsStudio 2 жыл бұрын
This is very common..the first few times makes you feel like a fish out of water. You can eliminate some of that stress by getting some dedicated plein air supplies - a palette box like mine means the paint is ready to go, no fussing with tubes. Then pick a spot away from everyone so that’s one less thing to worry about. Then simply do color notes. Practice mixing swatches of color before trying to paint a scene. Lots of little exercises you can start with.

Okay I just realized why some of my seaside/beaches/oceans paintings are missing the yellow tones of the water because of the tossing sand in the water. Your water has so much movement in it with watching the various colors you add to it that I didn’t realize before. 😁I’m finding out that I really have a fear of using purple in my skies, seascapes, and landscapes/mountains, which is definitely what is seen in all of subjects. 🤯 It’s comforting to see that I’m not the only one struggling with keeping my watercolors/gouache wet when painting outdoors. I forget to keep my eye on that while I’m painting. Once again thanks for sharing your time at the beach, inspiring us to paint & especially enjoy the moment. This is definitely a gorgeous painting.

Very cool seeing you work and paintsplain your thoughts especially after the squatchgouache class. I’m having to use watercolor and white right now and struggled to get the light values in the sand. I had the same trouble with the rocks we did in that class. Things came out dull. Maybe I need to use more yellow in my mixes…? I’m working on a Hahnemuele book with white paper. Thanks, and I loooove this video.
