You can go either way with an opaque medium. Typically start with darks. But here I wanted as much color down as possible from the start. Best option would have been to tone the entire surface with a transparent warm then go into the darks.

The same palette is used for all mediums: the warm and cool hues of the primaries, white, burnt sienna, and yellow ochre.
