What's your favourite gouache brand? And what do you think about acrylic gouache? Let me know in the comments and thanks for watching :)

My favourite brand is Holbein Artists' Gouache. I'm not a huge fan of acrylic gouache when I can just get massive tubes of regular acrylic for a fraction of the price. (The matte finish isn't important to me.)

If the matte finish isn’t important, can I ask what you get from gouache that you don’t get from acrylics?

@@PhilDaviesArtistGouache can be blended like oils..Gouache gives you lots of time to paint than acrylics.

Holbein - hands down. In Acryla gouache too, but mostly when I use gouache it's traditional.

@@PhilDaviesArtist Honestly sometimes I just want to do some quick paintings and don't want to deal with constantly cleaning my brushes before the acrylic paint dries on them. If I want to paint something large, I always use acrylics. I like gouache for smaller and/or quick paintings.

Thanks Phil. I learnt a lot. I've used gouache quite often, with the watercolours. I also use acrylic paints quite a lot. I use the pots of acrylic paints as I can put back paint that I don't use.

I’m a beginner and I totally didn’t know you should start with middle tones, and I’ve been trying to figure this out the hard way lol. Really in love with gouache but it’s super difficult not to reactivate paint, not to treat it as watercolor, or not to use TOO much and make a mess. Also the not so nice part- It’s so expensive 😅 thank you so much! Will look for acrylic gouache, super nice try tips!!!

My main complaint with Gouache is...its difficult to layer as it reactivates the base layer...akso blending can be tough if your not using thicker paint

This title caught my eye as I’ve been fooled (and annoyed) that the gouache I purchased online was actually acrylic. It pays to read labels. Like you, I prefer traditional gouache over acrylics calling themselves such. Your video does an excellent job in explaining the differences of these water soluble paints even for an old-timer like myself. That said, this video is a great resource for a beginner. Thank you for your thoroughness and clarity.

Super informative and helpful, thanks so much! Just bought some Windsor and Newton designer Gouache to mix into my gesso ground to do silverpoint. For regular painting, I use oils. Cheers from New Mexico USA!

Thanks Phil. I’ve been using watercolour mixed with white gouache for a few years now and have a few comments. It’s easier if your watercolour is in tubes, to get the thickness you really need. I found that while student grade works ok, for some colours the colour mixing can be hit and miss with cheap paints, do watch out for mud. Final tip, try hard to keep the gouache out of your watercolour palette. It hangs around like a bad smell and your next watercolour painting coukd end up chalky. I have a cheap plastic palette reserved for gouache.

Maineri gouache is my favorite brand for painting landscapes. Windsor Newton Designer's gouache is good for flat even colors. Holbein permanent white is good for their opacity. Very good video. Thank you.

;) thanks so much Phil :) By the way 12 lbs is $20.16 cad. Just saying. But that is still cheap. This was really great - no one has done anything like this.

Nice overview! Thank you. I really like M.Graham gouache. I also like some of Holbein's premixed colors. I've used acrylic with matte medium and love it, but I'm a regular gouache nerd and love the challenge. I don't feel the need to use acrylic gouache.

I have used acrylic matte medium too. It works quite well with regular gouache and acrylic paint to make flat waterproof layers.

I am using the gouache for 9 x 12-inch plein air sketches also but would appreciate some guidance with properly sealing the sketches to avoid water from reactivating the paint. I have not tried wax and wondered if some matt acrylic spray would work. Thank you @@PhilDaviesArtist

Hey nice video! Do you know if the Turner Acrylic Gouache or the Holbein Acrylic Gouache are actually lightfast, for professional gallery use? Seems to be a big deal when it comes to pigments.. The expensive traditional gouache like Winsor and Newton Designer for example and or some colored pencils from Derwent, could be bought with such lightfast quality.. Buying cheap pigments (student grade) costs more down the line in my opinion, so I am always looking for premium materials.. So I would like to know what brand Acrylic Gouache to go for, to maintain said quality..

@@sujanithtottempudi2991 Most people who like it like acrylics, but want the matte finish. There's not much benefit to it over traditional gouache. Unless you wanted to use it as an underlayer to your gouache paintings.
