I loved hearing the Brian & Drew Origin story. When Drew started talking about Shannon bursting into tears in Brian's garage because she knew that was where Drew needed to be, I started crying too! The relationship between the two of you is sooo heartwarming. You must always do weekly pencasts, and you must always do them together!

I've heard the best way to tell the difference between a raven and a crow is that if you look at it and you think "Hey, that bird is pretty big, I wonder if it might be a raven" it's a crow and if you think "OH HELP THIS ENORMOUS MONSTER IS GOING TO CONVEY MY SOUL TO THE UNDERWORLD POSTHASTE" it's a raven. Also if it perches on a bust of Athena and says "Nevermore" a bunch, I suppose.
@dacksonflux

Also crows are very conversational. They do that famous high pitched cawing you hear in horror movies when a ton of them start talking at the same time. Ravens sort of belt their gravely voices at you. Ravens are more introverted. You'll usually only see 1 or 2 of them. You can see lone crows but their families are normally nearby. Certain species of both can mimic human noises and voices, though. Which is extremely creepy.

The segment describing Archer's tutor was as delightful as it was profound. To hear about an educator who is conscious of the impact her grading will have on her pupil, and crucially approaching his parents in advance to explain the context, encourage support and offering to review his grade, was outstanding. My own experience of the UK education system at that age was miserable from start to end, because all bar two of the teachers were only interested in humiliating their students. By this simple gesture, Archer's tutor has equipped him from the future. There's a lesson about how grades have to be applied consistently but with constant consideration of the bigger picture. Her gift sounds well earned. Maybe Archer will be able to reflect positively on this experience when he is older.

I totally love you guys. I’m so touched at your relationship development over the years. You are both so fortunate to have a wonderful friendship and lovely, generous, conscientious wives as supports and inspiration. I’ think that’s why I have to continued to slip another pen into my collection. I’ve filled a 48 slot pen case with Twsbi, Pilot, Lamy, Sailor and Benu, mostly from Goulet and I’ve just ordered another one. To prevent cracking Eco’s, put them in the fridge for 30 minutes and they pop right out and are easier to open from then on. Happy Holidays and best wishes to you, your families and wonderful staff. 👋🏾👋🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾❤️

Filling the CON-40 doesn’t require any special tricks. It just takes letting go of the expectation that it should be “fully filled”. I’m not sure where that expectation comes from. Piston fillers don’t fully fill. Cartridges aren’t fully filled. If you want “full fills”, that’s what eyedropper filled pens are for. Every other filling system trades capacity for convenience.

Drew, remember Pilot's con 40 and con-20 are Pilot's way of telling you to switch inks frequently. Is it possible that the green Trapper Keeper was irradiated with gamma rays and when you were both thwacked with it, you were thus imbued with the SPIRIT OF STATIONARY PRODUCTS ...not as cool as the Spirit of Vengeance, but also perhaps a little less stressful. And thus, at that very moment that you were thwacked by the Trapper Keeper of Destiny, Goulet Pen Company was born?

The problem with the CON-40 is the amount of dead space below the range of piston travel. The ink fill can only be proportional to the piston travel displacement regardless of the diameter of the converter mouth. If that piston could be engineered to move farther it could fill better. I actually prefer the CON-20 or its remaining cousin, the CON-B. A few sharp squeezes can expel some of the dead space air and get a better fill than the CON-40, unless you do the fill/invert/expel/fill routine with the CON-40. The one nice thing about the wide mouth converters is that they (like piston fillers) are less likely to have ink "hang up" behind an air bubble in a narrower opening. The CON-40 functions well, it's just a low capacity reservoir which a juicy nib will drain quickly.
@archivist17

As it happens, I was sketching up ideas for more compact/capacious converters when I started watching this Pencast. It's a complex problem, but Pilot can certainly do better than their current offering.

You put your loose-leaf notebook paper in it, and there were also glossy folders with pockets that could go in it. My first one closed with a snap which eventually was replaced by Velcro. I gotta step in here with support for Drew. Everything he's saying about the Con70 is absolutely true. Even WITH a syringe, it just takes so long to clean that it's an irritation. Exactly as he said, you'll think it's finally good to go...give it one last squirt with the syringe and suddenly more ink is dislodged from somewhere up in the button mechanism, just such a pain to clean. It's actually why I tend to put one ink in, and then only use that ink with my Custom 74, which means it's not as versatile as my other pens where they have an easy cleaning converter so I can switch inks when I want after a nice quick rinse-out of the converter. Drew is spot-on here.

Once my wife and I discovered fountain pens, they all got gathered up and collected and threw into the abyss cabinet that nothing ever returns from. I didn’t like it at first because it was so light but recently inked it up and discovered that it is a very nice pen. I would have picked the Explorer like Brian. Hamilton fan here. For years the soundtrack on my phone would instantly sync when I turned on my car. I’ve seen it on stage 4 times. Merry Christmas!

I agree about the Diplomat Magnum, I have one, I love it. But it weights like it was made of feathers (ah ah). It also have that large hole/ink window thingy... If it was a Lamy Safari, it needs it's "AL Star" version

I think, as far as the gravy boat goes - I think Brian should MAKE one out of wood and he could shape it into a "old" viking ship. "Whittle, Whittle, Whittle."

Corner cabinet.. well I had to look, apparently it's the entertaining china (fancy!!!!) which we never use... cos kids who has time for that now? Also found a pound of loose leaf tea, which was a surprise.

thank you, Drew, for the Pilot converter rant!! I am a complete Pilot converter failure and have also resorted to just refilling cartridges. I love writing with my Metropolitan but honestly the converter finickiness has scared me off any leveling up in the Pilot pen family.

Those corner cabinets are the bane of my kitchen. I hate them so much. Of course those cabinets are also the ones with the smallest cabinet door openings. We have the ice cream maker, a blender, the wok, and some random seasonal things stored there.

Inside Out is the greatest Pixar movie made yet. I'm a fan of Bing Bong and Joy, but even more so I'm a fan of Sadness, because Sadness is what helps us appreciate Joy, and our Sadness is oftentimes what creates who we are. My Diplomat Magnum is so light it's crazy. I agree with a metal body. I love the nib on mine but it's so darned light it doesn't feel like I'm holding anything so I end up pressing down more than I want to.

We have a small (2x4m) kitchen, with a window and a door. We still have that Twilight Zone for "when on earth are we going to use..." things. It's the top shelf of any cabinet for heavy stuff (pizza stone, ice cream maker...) and on top of a shelf, inside a cake caddy, for lighter stuff (cookie cutters, Big Show action figure to make doll cakes with...). Also, if Brian really, really needs an ancient looking gravy boat, Drew can always go out and find a potter who will make one and fire it with either a raku technique, or in an open fire. Forget the Indiana Jones holy grail, this gravy boat will make it look like the recipe came from the Flintstones themselves.

I think the Precision was likely based off the old Rotring 600 (which was also available as a fountain pen), it looks very similar to some of the models in the 600 line. Maybe that's why it's so mechanic pencil like.

The TWSBI Precision has style similarities with the Rotring 600. The "mechanical pencil" reference is pretty apt because the Rotring 600 mechanical pencil (and ballpoint) shout engineering.

You can do live streams on KZbin, They tend to be very popular but also take practice to get good at. I think your pencast as a live stream would be fun.
