For the heck of it I checked the potential of rabies in squirrels. It’s extremely rare. And! There has never been a case of rabies Transmitted from a squirrel to a human being. So the rabies potential on which any of this is based is ludicrous. Even the raccoon which is a household animal, would be rather unlikely to have contracted rabies. They went in because the NYS regs said they could. But then of course they went far beyond the scope unimaginably. I hope the lawsuits set him up for life.

I once had a neighbor call Fish and Wildlife (a federal agency) on me because I put out 3-4 walnuts in the shell every day for the neighborhood squirrels. Four officers showed up at my door but I refused to speak to them. The neighbor tried to get "video surveillance" of my "crime" but I got up and fed the squirrels every day at 4 am, and she slept in until noon, so apparently I'm a master criminal. People should also understand that this guy was not living in some apartment in New York City. He lived in a small town on acreage. He was running a farm for rescued horses that he took from slaughterhouse. He had a pet squirrel out on acreage! The whole idea that the squirrel could have rabies and that's why they euthanized him is ridiculous. Rodents do not normally carry rabies ever! It's such a non-issue that if you were ever bit by a wild rodent the doctor will give you a tetanus shot and send you on your way. They don't even treat for it. Raccoons are actually pretty common carriers of rabies but all they needed to do to the raccoon was quarantined it for 30 days then vaccinated every year like you would your dog and the issue would be resolved. I don't know what this was all about, but it certainly wasn't about a squirrel.
