Excellent review! Was very happy to see more than the typical unboxing, specs, benchmarks, and gameplay that pretty much all other reviews seem to follow. When looking at a device like the Duo, people really need a lot more information about actual use of the device to make an informed decision, so thanks for putting in the extra time on that. I ordered the Duo day 1 and can't wait for it to arrive. It will be replacing my WM2 as my primary desktop and productivity laptop when traveling. I use an eGPU with 2 vertically stacked displays at home and the Duo will allow me to keep that same layout when traveling for work. Love it!

@sindrisuncatcher6532 ай бұрын
God yes. Even if this doesn't work out for them I love to see companies like GPD taking a gamble on something new, when most of the industry seems to be pretending that replacing a 13"/15"/17" laptop line with a 14"/16" laptop line is somehow revolutionary.
@ianmacd2 ай бұрын
I have a Duo on order and can't wait for it to arrive. This was a great review (as they always are), but I really don't understand the issue with the second OLED screen being highly reflective when folded back during use of the laptop in a public place. I also like to be unobtrusive in public, but if the person in front of me happens to be able to see their own reflection in a black screen at the back of my laptop, I don't think that's something that I would care about at all. All in all, I think the Duo will be just enough laptop for my own needs. My existing Lenovo P53 is already heavier than the Duo, and becomes even heavier when I take its massive power brick with me, so I'll actually be travelling lighter once the Duo arrives.

Yuri of MxPx is my brother-in-law. Great guy. I thought this laptop was going to be super gimmicky until you said you can power the second monitor with the laptop off. That's pretty cool. I could see myself using that feature often. I didn't think about running two game instances for versus multiplayer. That is a very cool use case. I would like to see how Bazzite runs on this. I just set up Bazzite on an Intel 9700K with an AMD 7600XT and I've been really happy with it for what I play.

The big disadvantage of laptops in my experience, as compared to desktops, is the limits on screen space. When I'm writing or coding, I like to have a few pages of reference materials, a music player, and probably a chat client. Even when playing games, a lot of the time I play in a windows with a wiki or something off to the side. On a 24+" screen that's no problem but on a 13" screen it's difficult to make use of more than two pages at a time at most. You could mitigate that somewhat by going up to a 16" or 17" laptop, but it's still awkward to shuffle things around and the whole setup is more cumbersome and less flexible. And sure, you could connect to an external monitor, but that involves a bundle of extra cables, more dedicated desk space, and you need to disconnect/reconnect everything whenever you move the machine. I've never used a dual-screen laptop (all of them before this one had pretty obvious and major design flaws), but it seems like it would do pretty much everything a full desktop setup is good for, but in a much more convenient and flexible package. I'll need to see more reviews before I make a decision (in particular, a representative sample of units bought retail instead of deliberately sent to youtubers, to confirm that build quality and QA testing are solid), and this is a lot of money, but if it seems to be a machine I would be loving to use for many years into the future the cost could easily be worth it...

This thing has a great use case for students. Dual screens is such an insane boost to productivity, and being able to put it into tablet mode for writing notes would be awesome. I'd slap a matte screen protector on the top screen so that when I flip it into regular laptop mode, the 'mirror' issue (as well as possible dust/fingerprints) wouldn't be as big of a deal, and it would be more nice to write on with the matte texture. I love this device- but I'm a bit wary about buying from GPD. Their QA is far from stellar, and because there are two hinges, it's far more likely to become damaged. The repair/RMA process is probably nonexistent or far from convenient for anyone not living in China, so you're pretty much out of luck if there's a problem with it.
@sindrisuncatcher6532 ай бұрын
GPD's reputation for QA and service has improved significantly since they made the shift from cheap emulation boxes to high end minipcs, but that change is so recent that it's hard to feel comfortable dropping two grand on it. I trust them more than the likes of asus these days though.

@shirokuro732 ай бұрын
Honestly I'm tempted, but thats because I'm a gadget addict and compulsive upgrader. However, what would REALLY be great would be a single screen version of this. Because all the other stuff is pretty great - HX370, AMOLED screen, 80WHr battery, USB-A, USB-C, full SD card slot - and ETHERNET!!!! No small form factor machines have ethernet anymore, and I bemoan that! But having said all that, I can get just about all of those things in a gaming laptop from Asus, Lenovo etc, plus have a RTX4060 or RTX4070 or so for the same or lower price. Either way, this is a really interesting device. But the other concern is what you said about repairs. If I have to pay a fortune to ship it to GPD if something goes wrong? I have an Asus gaming laptop right now, I paid for the best buy warranty - if anything goes wrong I can just take it there. That's definitely a concern with these expensive machines from overseas, you don't have the easy return or repair options.

Imagine convincing one of your creative industry friends to give up their ASUS Pro Art laptop or iPad Pro for this. Unless they are a techie, it would be an impossibly hard sell. Not to mention, the lack of support would be a killer (yes Asus has been getting a lot of bad publicity on their support, and deservedly so, but in the end if you do need to exchange it, it is still easier than with GPD). As you mentioned, a gamer would just take the same money and get a laptop with a dedicated GPU. Therefore the real market segment is those people whose work needs 2 screens and they are technically savvy enough to navigate the "rabbit holes" and don't mind the lack of support and this is a very rare breed.
