A review of the GPS Navigation enabled Rangeman, the GPRB1000, one of the most advanced and geeky Gshock watches EVER. Is it just a gadget or is it something more serious?
The 3452 module and it's ability to have an independent GPS bakctracking option that is rechargable makes this a survival took in my opinion separating it from regular smart watches like the Apple iWatch and Samsung Gear, but it is also quite different than other outdoor oriented sports watches like Garmin and Suunto. This G Shock lacks a lot of features those Bluetooth and GPS models offer, but has something those models don't. A solar cell, allowing it to keep working outdoor as other competitors batteries die.

I got this as a gps receiver of last resort. Everything you say about it is true, I can attest. The solar function when used in equatorial sunlight works flawlessly, used it daily in Thailand to log travels and did not need to use the cradle again until I reached 30 deg latitude. Its very hardened gear, I have bumped, knocked and banged it... still near mint condition. Subjected it to days of sea water and uv... no issue and even a bike accident... still fine. When changing cities, no need to manually adjust location or wait for am broadcast.. just let it see the satellite and it is instantly adjusted. This is my new favorite companion.

As someone who 'ventures into the wilderness' weekly I would not recommend replacing your handheld gps and/or plb with this or any other smartwatch. Please don't rely on this to bring you back home. Hikers get lost when they make unplanned deviation from their intended track, rough weather can deny access to the track you are familiar with and rough weather can come any time they want in the mountains. A to B tracking only works if nothing goes wrong.

I used this watch once to get away from a T-Rex, and at night, when Batman was chasing me, I used the barometer to predict the weather while I got away. The coolest part was, Aquaman couldn’t go beyond 200M under water, while I was calmly looking at the time. Also when I was hiking once, I fell 3 story building, thankfully, my G Shock was fine.

Yes!! I've been waiting for you to do a video on this watch. I got mine earlier this month after waiting half a year to be able to afford it. Couple of things people should also know about this watch is that the alarms and timer are so quiet. If you're a person who frequently uses their alarms like me, forget about it. You won't even know your alarm went off unless you're in a very quiet place. The watch won't even give you the option to make the alarms louder. Also, no hourly chime. Really, Casio? Y'all couldn't add the hourly chime? Nearly every G-Shock is supposed to have this feature. And why make the alarms so quiet??? For anyone worried about whether this'll fit you, I have a 5-inch wrist. This fits me to the second to last hole of the strap. Would recommend to adults only, for sure. But either way, this watch kicks ass!! Just wish Casio had thought it through a bit better. I'm still gonna use my watch anyways.

Let’s face it, the small percentage of smart watch users don’t all go into the wilderness. Uses are mainly for workout tracking and notifications, not taking out your phone every time it buzzes. The rangeman is for the outdoorsy kind of consumers, and don’t get me wrong, it is a wonderful watch. I’d rather have one proper smart watch and one survival watch! Nice vid btw👍🏻

My girl wanted to buy me a watch for present and we went to casio shop together to choose one, but after having Suunto ambit3 peak Sapphire on my wrist that day, I couldn't see anything that this rangeman is worth the 1000$ price compared to the Suunto. Actually the Suunto except the battery that need charge (its pretty tough battery btw), is way better watch and with way more accurate tools. Also the build of the Suunto is on a next level (higher). When I saw the Frogman though and I touched it, saw the screw back case and the premium quality + the fact that it was on discount for 950$... couldn't resist and now I own it! :} My advice: if you have to buy G-shock, go to the store, watch them closely, feel them and then buy. Don't do it online, because you will not understand what you're probably missing

Thank you for the nice work, and please keep your habit of posting nice genuine reviews. It was quite the search for it, I got it from Gioiapura it for 488euros after some free discount codes. Before I had the GG-1000 but this is more comfortable for me due to its soft rubber. It is very impressive and it does get noticed around, and the size for me is perfect as I am a big guy 1.9m, even my wife (which has a very elegant style) said it looks good on me. I have decided to get all of the masters of G watches to own as a collection.

SOFTWARE UPDATE: Just an FYI that the GPR-H1000 received an update, which enables much faster satellite connection. Massive practical improvement. I'm so impressed with this piece, and it's usability now. IMHO, it's an issue that should've been addressed before release in that I believe damage was done to the reputation of both Casio and the Gshock/ Rangeman name. That said, this watch is now a complete workhorse for me. I love it. Hope you do a review and tutorial on it as you're literally my favorite watch reviewer. I don't comment on your vids much but still am appreciative of the work that goes into them. Most informative, great demeanor. Peace! Is peace with an exclamation mark oxymoronic? (It's a word. Note: If you get lost *more than once* away from home anywhere (city, town, woods, National Park, the local forest, etc.) You really don't need this watch, a survival knife, or another life saving device. You need to stay at home because you are a very poor planner and *are a danger* to yourself & others with you. If saving your life is what this watch is for get one of the other Casios. Just saying. *EDIT:* Happy upcoming Independence Day on the 4th of July.

Thanks for your thoughts on the new Rangeman. I find the size too big for me, as it is for you. Hopefully Casio will come up with smaller versions in the future, and fix some of the limitations like the large 1 second increment on the stopwatch (why not 1/100 like most other Gs, or even 1/10?), the lack of an hourly chime, and the inability to set the moon and tide functions without the app (which you mentioned). Regarding negative display Casio watches, I highly recommend the GD-350-1B. It has the best negative display I've personally seen on any Casio. It's nearly as good as a positive display, which is not usually the case.

and to think that nokia used to provide you with maps that could be used without the need of an internet connection. i think there are some apps that allow you to do that. maybe.

vs Fenix 5x plus? aside from solar charging.. as im always offroading and camping, sports features r less of my concern if this watch rebranded to a Protrek it wouldn't hurt either.

Nice watch but if you live in nordic countries you can forget the solar charger. Im from central Europe and my DW5600 is at its minimum charge most of the time, so solar is not for me. But it might be great if you live in t-shirt countries.

What’s another less expensive Gshock or Gshock like watch that has a lot or some of these features? Best hard everyday use, dependable “survival” solar powered watch under 3 or 400$??

The reason why it will be not any smaller is... They couldn't find Tony Stark. Yeah is a big watch. Even in the shop only display a single G Shock rather with other G Shocks in the same cabinet. I agree with you, there are no perfect G Shock. Hey... Your Frogman still have the keeper protector film!

Is this surpassed by the Garmin 6X Solar right now? I cant find out if that can do solar powered gps tracking. It only says the panel is solar powered.

Hello! Excellent review! What I'm trying to understand is whether the clock should be connected to the cell phone to get the exact time, or is it just one of the options and the clock will show the exact time without contact with the cell phone, by receiving information directly from the satellite (GPS). Thanks!

Nice review, but did this change time zones via GPS without interaction from Wearer?.... Also how does ceramic back handle direct shock eg if fell on sharp rock from high
@WatchGeek
@WatchGeek 5 жыл бұрын
It updates timezones whenever you use navigation, but it will not do it by itself, NONE of the current GPS watches does it automatically. As for ceramic caseback, I haven't tested, bit given that it is well protected by your wrist, I doubt it would be an issue
@MrCarpen7er
@MrCarpen7er 4 жыл бұрын
Have you ever wonder why G-Shock watches have bended straps ? That´s right, mainly to protect the back case of the watch when it drops. And ceramic is strong, also very scratch resistant.
