Rob Hartsock this is the thing that makes me not like Alex Honnold. As a climber I really hate the message that he puts out that free soloing is a normal thing and that he encourages people to push past his accomplishments and solo things harder than the line on el cap. So much of climbing is focused on safety and the sport can be such a beautiful thing, but I feel like with all the publicity Alex Honnold and free solo have gotten that it paints a false narritivw of climbing as this extreme dangerous sport when in reality it can be very safe. I would encourage your son, if he is interested in climbing or maybe getting into the sport, to check out some other climbers who I think represent the climbing community better than Alex Honnold. These include Alex Megos, Adam Ondra, Tommy Caldwell, Chris Sharma, or any of the US Olympic climbers. I wish that people could see these peoples accomplishments instead of praising Alex Honnold for something that is incredibly dumb. People shouldn’t be idolized for risking their lives for no reason.
@gerardmagnarelli558
@gerardmagnarelli558 4 жыл бұрын
Jacob Rollins No amount of admiration for Alex’s soloing will overcome the fear of soloing on your own. 99.999% of all climbers wouldn’t climb 10ft off the ground without safety equipment. Furthermore, he doesn’t put this message out at all .. he’s extremely clear about the dedication, preparation, anxiety and insanity required, and has never once alluded to it being easy/normal. As a climber you KNOW soloing isn’t normal .. and anyone that thinks it is normal is obviously not a climber so it doesn’t matter. The second someone gets into climbing it becomes abundantly clear how asinine and simply inimitable his accomplishments are. Do your non-climbing friends ask you all the time why you don’t free-solo? Cause you’re hating hard bud 😂
@jacobrollins6372
@jacobrollins6372 4 жыл бұрын
Gerard Magnarelli I didn’t mean to sound hateful and I’m sorry if that’s the way I came off. I admire Honnold a ton and he’s definitely a great person and athlete. My problem lies more with his movie than Honnold himself. I don’t think Honnold is the one normalizing soloing but rather the fact that Nat Geo produced Free Solo and that it recently won an Oscar that give soloing a certain sense of legitimacy to an outside perspective. I agree that anyone who seriously gets into climbing will soon realize that soloing takes a different level of skill and mastery, but I still think that it is important for non climbers to understand the sport even if they don’t affect it. If you ask any non climber to name a famous rock climber, chances are they’ll bring up Alex Honnold. That’s really my problem, that people associate the entire sport of climbing with a very niche practice that I don’t think accurately represents it. Again, sorry if sounded rude I just kind of get annoyed by this topic.😊

I met Alex a few weeks ago in a local climbing gym. No one was talking to him because they were starstruck. I have no shame so immediately went and said hi. It was very much a feeling of "please leave me alone I just want to climb and not talk to people". I, of course, totally get that and left him alone, but I feel like I see a bit of that in every one of his interviews and such these days, especially so in his live talk in Gothenburg, Sweden: Into The Unknown. I've been following his life for about 10 years, only because the manager of my climbing gym told me about Alex (and held the speed record on El Cap with him for a short while). I'm no longer a climber, but have enjoyed the sport growing up around Yosemite. Alex is my "sports idol." I can't explain it, but something about his humility, low-key personality, and epic adventure spirit has made me a HUGH fan. I've been a mountain bike racer since 1994, and I've always been drawn to adventure athletes, but none of them have been on stage to accept an Academy Award (ok, technically it was the film, Free Solo). Keep doing what you do Alex!

The question "How do I or should I start free soloing?" freaks me out. The person that asked this is probably not even a climber. No beginner or advanced climber would turn to the internet to find an answer to a question like that. I hope that person knows what he/she's doing...

As someone who free solos (though nothing more than a fraction of a fraction of the height of el cap), i felt the same way, free soloing is such an internal and mental thing, i cant imagine asking that question online and expecting a helpful answer back when i first started, its a hugely personal endeavor.. i almost wonder if the person who asked that just thought "wow that looks cool, i wanna do that, how do i do that" after seeing honnold do it, when thats not at all how someone should get into free soloing, in my opinion.. I definitely feel like honnold hit the nail on the head when he said you should be "called" to it

His feat in itself is what separates him. There are prob tons who "could" do it. As he mentioned ....but to even have that nerve to consider it. That and his personal conquest...not for fame (atleast comes off like that and I certainly believe it) is what makes it all so fascinating.

as an enthusiast who tends not to remember names or follow the news much, I actually had no idea who you were when I started watching videos of you breaking down movie scenes. I had heard that someone finally free-solo'd El Cap but I never remembered the name. It's really cool to hear your voice and see your personality. I'm much more likely to remember those.
