Yeah... while not as sad as the series, this movie is confusing enough for an adult. I can't imagine a child understanding even half of what's going on here. For us adults the movie probably started out horrible, but got better and better, but for the girls, they were probably totally into cute happy-go-lucky beginning and then it became... well more and more Urobuchi, i.e. merciless mindfuck. Must have been weird, confusing maybe even traumatic. Children shouldn't watch this.

@mahoushoujo maisoon "I find it really sad Sayaka matured in a controversial incomplete movie that everybody pretends it never existed." I know this is a year later, but what are you even talking about? Rebellion is one of the most popular anime movies ever and dunno man if you want to see how much is loved just search any rebellion scene right here in youtube and watch how many people praise it. Any scene. Also the internet exploded with the announcement of the 4th movie.

Oh she did plenty wrong. She is also you know - literally insane. She did that time loop almost 100 times, surviving only through sheer determination, becoming colder and colder each time. She probably has the worst case of PTSD in the world. And I don't think magical girls mature emotionally all that quickly. If she let Madoka take away her despair and kill her, she dooms Madoka to being a pawn of the Incubators. This is just another time cycle for her. She will do anything, try anything, to make her wish come true. But how else could she end it? They wouldn't let her die. Madoka's wish prevented her from becoming a witch. Her wish prevented Madoka from being a goddess forever, because that is NOT saved. And all wishes come true.
@wobbledu

As I remember Madoka was safe from Incubator at the end and she could have let Madoka take her away (as the author actually intended, but the money whores "forced" him to prolong it). And as I understood it Homura isnt able to turn time back the same way as before since Madoka is some kind of god present in all time. SO she shouldnt be able to effect her with that I think. I dont know what to feel about the ending. Somehow its more or less happy, but still it somehow feels wrong.

There is nothing wrong with saying that at the end of the original series. its a pretty happy ending. for everyone.... ohhh wait.... not for Homura.... ya.... The ending of the thirid movie makes it a happy ending for Homura... and honestly not a bad ending for everyone....... Its like you are going to live happy lives, you wont have a choice to but who cares about your choices as long as Im with Madoka.

At first, whe I saw the twist, I was screaming: What the hell?! But then I thought about it more, and the ending wasn't as bad as it seemed in my opinion. (Spoilers Ahead, You Have Been Warned) When Homura recreates the world after becoming a demon, she makes it so Madoka, Kyoko, Sayaka, Mami, and Nagisa are all happy and are able to live good, normal lives. She dosen't care if Madoka and the others all think her decision was the wrong one and if they become enemies, because Homura knows that her decision was better than having Madoka, the one she loved, away from all her loved ones as a goddess making her sad, as she stated in the convo between her and Homura on the hill. Homura dosen't care about what happens to her, she just wants Madoka, the one she loves to be happy. Or at least that's my thoughts about the thing.

Absolutely agree, my initial reactions were very similar and I hated the end until I had it sorted out in my head, my final conclusion was very similar to this. Here's something to consider... Remember the life's lesson Madoka's mother once gave Madoka which was something along the lines of: "If a friend is doing the _right_ thing but suffers because it, then to help them, you should try doing the _wrong_ thing instead." Rebellion's ending is this - Version: Homura Junko's comentary on the resolution and consequences is also spot on. For a situation like this, there is no way the end is going to be neat and happy. People will misunderstand that person true motives and hate them for their actions. The person who is saved might even stand amongst them. In the end, it's a choice between giving up on your friend, or being misunderstood by them. For me, the just match seems too perfect to be a mere coincidence...

I see where you're coming from on the addition of Bebe/Nagisa, but to me she was there to be a representation of the "perfect world." In the original series, most of the main characters had their "special someone": There was Sayaka and Kyoko, and Homura and Madoka, but Mami was alone; something that was a huge part of her motivations and actions. Her desperation for companionship was her biggest character motivator. Nagisa's addition to the cast fills that hole, making that perfect world that Homura dreamed of. I agree that she should have been established better, but that was her importance to the script and I think it was an important addition nonetheless.

She refused everyone's salvation for her own selfish wish. She went against Madoka's wishes and betrayed not only Madoka but everyone else. She changed everyone's memories TWICE and rewrote the universe for the second time after Madoka just risked everything to change it. She defeated Kyubey which was a good thing but ultimately became what make Kyubey so bad in the first place, cold, selfish, controlling and ultimately, in her own words, evil.

Would you really have prefered the movie without the twist in the end? Everyone is just happy and goes on with their lives in the real world? That would be extremely boring compared to what we've got. Good endings are overrated.
@ihusmal1234
@ihusmal1234 10 жыл бұрын
Tragic endings are overrated too. After the bittersweet ending of the TV series and depressing themes throughout the whole entire series in general, I wouldn't have mind a happy ending for the movie and wrapped everything up in a nice little bow. We didn't really need that twist.
@TheJaranuJanic
@TheJaranuJanic 10 жыл бұрын
Ihus mal This was always inevitable. Madoka's and Homura's wishs directly contradict each other. Homura does not care about anyone else OTHER than madoka. She doesn't get what Madoka wants, because the whole theme of the show is making wishes for other people that are actually for yourself. Homura was always doomed to this. They are also making more, so the story is not over yet.
@SonicFan2525
@SonicFan2525 10 жыл бұрын
TheJaranuJanic I wouldn't say Homura doesn't care for anyone but Madoka, because she has made it clear multiple times that she does care for their other friends quite a bit. Its just that when she snapped, her love for Madoka blinded her and turned her into what she is now.

Well, the ending didn't necessarily have to be happy. I would have loved it if they ended this movie the way the original series ended, which wasn't completely happy but rather bittersweet and it felt right to end it that way. Personally, I think twists are becoming the new "overrated." Not all twists are bad, but it seems like everybody's trying to do it (and I'm not just talking about anime), because it's the current "in" thing to do with story writing.
@NovaBlazerZX
@NovaBlazerZX 10 жыл бұрын
The problem with that twist as arkada explained is that it leaves room for stuff to happen. The thing about good endings is that they provide closure and tell you that all is done and there nothing more to add on. But that twist says there is more except that they are either not going to tell you or there may be more and there didnt have to be with the way the series has already gone. As for me personally i like good endings sense it gives off a sense of triumph and victory in spite of every difficult and harsh trials which can be inspiring. Bad or tragic endings while im okay with certain ones, dont do that for me, and unless the tragedy was bittersweet, i would prefer that they kept on with the story until they can get a good enough closure which good endings for the most part do it imo.

I say the ending was the best part, and to me, it wasn't as much of a cliffhanger as the original Madoka Magica, this one ties up the story relatively well, leaving only a few questions, as opposed to the original leaving behind several questions. What Homura did was genius, allowing Madoka to be happy (refer to ribbon scene) giving the girls salvation, and conveniently causing nobody to suffer. (Except for QB, but who cares about him) Also, wraiths or demons are easier to beat than witches and allows teamwork. So yay, HomuLucifer=Best Character

Rebellion didn't confirm any of the ships as canon in my honest opinion, and to be frank, it only confirmed that Homura is a sociopathic yandere that Madoka doesn't deserve to be stuck with, and the fans couldn't care less about Madoka despite how much of a nice character she is all because of "Homura's time loops" and "what Homura had to go through", while yes, what Homura had to go through makes her deserving of a happy end, I feel that she messed that up for herself, because regardless if Homura didn't get a happy ending in the first place or not, Madoka doesn't deserve to be stuck with a sociopathic yandere and people tend to say that Kyoko and Sayaka became canon in rebellion or something, I'm reading it in this thread as well, while I don't remember much about Rebellion anymore, I don't think they were really, a couple, though perhaps they were possibly and my memory is foggy (because I have genuinely bad memory and everyone I know keeps writing that off as part of my Autism ignoring the possibility of me actually having a legitimate forgetfulness based disease or something), and to be frank, I don't want any of the ships canon, and this is due to how the fan-base acts, they're more obsessive over the ships than Homura is over Madoka and that's saying something, the ships have been way more repetitive and met so much more fatigue than the New Super Mario Bros series as a whole has and that's saying something, they act so much more rude than the characters on South Park do and that's saying something (okay, maybe this one is kind of an exaggeration, I mean, the characters on South Park are pretty rude, but then again, so are the shippers), and overall they just aren't very nice people and they don't even bother to send sources to the ships all being "100% canonically confirmed" leading a skeptic like me to believe they aren't telling the truth and are just making it up because they ship it, and instead of sending sources they say how way too Homophobic to see the canonicalness of the ships said person is all because they even so as to say it's not confirmed as canon, either that, or they send fan-art of the ships as their "proof" expecting people to believe that proves anything I also don't understand why the fans care so much about people calling one of the characters "their waifu" because they are fictional characters, so these real people that say this can't get in the way of Homura or whoever, because the girls are in the anime, and these real people are outside of it, so what are they gonna gain by going out of their own way to ask people "What is your Madoka Magica waifu" just so they can respond with "Only [insert girl here] can say that because [insert ship here] is 100% canonical" and then when they are told that it's not canon (at least not yet) they start acting really rude (which caused 16 year-old easily triggered by small things me to make large comments like this, but cussing them out and inserting swear words here and there and acting really angry about them, and being really really stressed to the point that it didn't really get the point on why the fandom is so toxic across and causing people to stress me out even more by commenting on how negative I was acting all the while being completely just as negative at the same time, using the same swear words at the same time)

Why is Homura a sociopathic yandere? she just wants Madoka to live a happy and safe life, Madoka reveals to her that she could not be happy away from her family, friends or simply acquaintances link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXuXh2aEaNxpjac that's why she decided to remove the essence of it before it ceased to exist taking her to a fake world where she could be happy, so I do not know why she is called yandere or selfish by people, when she does not care that Madoka loves her or that she is her friend, she only wants her happiness, because Homura loves Madoka. On the other hand Sayaka x Kyoko has a good chance of existing, that is, Sayaka during the battle against homurilly, says that her only regret at death was to leave Kyoko, she said it while the two held hands. link:kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKHGd5iPoNyegbM mmm sorry this in Spanish, see the movie or use a translator. Finally do not generalize to the whole fandom, I'm not that kind of "fanboy" (although yes, I love the romantic yuri, and Homura x Madoka is one of my favorites, so I will defend it with all the tentacle peaks that are necessary!)

I will say that the Madoka franchise can be ended right here, and it will still be good. Actually, I prefer it to end here. I have commented that Homura's development is actually fitting: a magical girl slowly go insane after trying and failing to save her friend over and over again, only to completely fail in her wish; just like when you try to kill Ornstein and Smough then fail over and over and over again, and you want to chew off your own face. It was not out of character. Homura was half-insane in the original series: remember, she did not give two shits about anyone else; she tried to kill Sayaka just so that Madoka would not have to see Sayaka become a witch. But why did I say the series should end right now? Because the ending is actually good, and complete, with a few speculations on the part of the viewer. It's a melancholic ending. It's saccharine sweet and you can feel the wrongness behind it. Not because Homura just disregard everyone's feelings and do whatever she wish to, but that the world Homura created is a dying one. She never solved the entropy problem (as understood in the Madoka universe). She beat the shit out of the Incubators, the only one understand the problem, just because, as satisfying to watch that. I believe the song your Silver Garden is Homura's sentiments and future: the world is dying, and Homura will sacrifice everything, and everyone, to maintain the illusion of the perfect life for Madoka, until one day, Homura herself will die, and the cold, empty, dead universe is revealed to the imprison Goddess. If you've ever played Dark Souls, Homura is Gwyndolin, the universe is Anor Londo. I think that's a perfect ending for this series. You don't need to continue it. And if there were a punishment for dethroning a Goddess, that is the most fitting one. That was quite a rant with some Dark Souls sprinkled all over it. Yeah, I just play Dark Souls.
@Elround4
@Elround4 8 жыл бұрын
+Xuan Vinh To Well said. Additionally, I posit that this was the perfect backlash to the Incubators hubris of thinking they were free from the "laws of equivalent exchange." They, through both direct and indirect actions, tried to stop entropy but instead inevitably exacerbated it.
@Elround4
@Elround4 8 жыл бұрын
+Xuan Vinh To Conversely, how do we know that both of these goddesses won't keep on existing alone together once their (current) universe finally dies out? Would they end up being 100% metaphysical like Madokami was at the end of the anime?
@Reirainsong
@Reirainsong 8 жыл бұрын
Correct, with the exception of the entropy problem. The Incubators could only postpone it; which is why we are able to see the entropy progressing. The imagery suggests that Homura actually managed to solve it very much offhandedly, by infusing the entire universe with such an amount of magic that it's is basically self-contained. Familiars are everywhere and seem to coexist peacefully, if invisibly, with humans. Sure, it's in a bubble now, but would you really want to break this bubble if you know that there is absolutely nothing outside? The only thing that gives the feeling this universe is unsustainable is, ironically, Homura herself due to her feelings of guilt over doing the pragmatic, but morally objectionable thing - but she thinks this is a burden she may be able to bear, as long as everyone else is happy, and it's certainly a step forward from what Madoka did.

The Ending of madoka 3 was always something that I could read comments about for hours upon hours because everyone I see seems to have a different opinion about it, some (like me) think its absolutely godlike and it brings in a very interesting twist that (even though at first it seemed like it came out of nowhere) had plenty of foreshadowing in the storyline and in the character development, especially if you rewatch the movie. There are also people who seem to heavily dislike it for reasons Arkada described. Somehow both of these groups are fairly loud in voicing their opinions and I dont want to say that either of them are wrong or that it is a de facto good or bad ending, just that your enjoyment of it is heavily swayed by your own opinions and expectations and Arkada explained that his own expectations laid somewhere else than what we got in this movie. I wished Arkada would have also stressed more how grandiose the animation and sound was (he did make a comment that the animation alone was worth seeing it), but it is noticeable in his still high rating at the end, that these two aspects were rated close to a 10/10, and they pretty much deserve it. I feel like despite the superb animation,sound and story before the ending, everyone interested in rather mature animes should watch the madoka series and madoka 3 just to make their own opinion about the ending. It is farily hard to explain why it is a particularly good or bad ending, but making up your own ideas about it is imo a big part of the fun.

Well let's look at a couple things here. First off, he says that the ending wasn't necessarily bad, it just wasn't at all to his liking. He's trying to not be too critical in his rating because of his own opinion. Now, that is a risky thing for a reviewer to do admittedly, so I understand skepticism with his rating there. But there's a bit more to it then that. Before he actually gives his rating, he explains this is taking Story, Characters, Animation, Sound, and general Enjoyment all into consideration. Now, he doesn't give specific scores in each category, which would have been nice, but since the 8.54 is an average of all those, it's very plausible the ending is what dropped it down from being even higher. He raved about the Sound and Animation, enough to potentially assume those were 9 or 10 scores, and the story was possible still fairly high, like a 7, because of everything before the ending. Without rambling more with theorizing the rest of the scores, it's very plausible an 8.54 is an accurate rating regardless of him hating the end.
@lowryder259
@lowryder259 10 жыл бұрын
***** Yeah that's pretty much what I was getting at. Likely the other categories were really high ratings, like 8-9, maybe even a 10. Plus he said a lot of great things about the story besides the end, so it's possible even that was still pretty high, it was just the sour ending that dropped it a tad. I freaking ADORED this show and the movie, including the end of the movie as well, but I do agree with him that if this was it for PMMM, my appreciation for this film would decline a bit, since it was a very dark ending added on to a series that was already complete.

on a random note: i think Homura screwed herself over when at the end of the original series, told Kyubey what had happened and that she was the only person to remember the existence of Kaname, Madoka. If she hadn't told him all that, this movie WOULDN'T have happened... at least i don't think. so the original series built up to this in a way... ._.
@lowryder259
@lowryder259 10 жыл бұрын
I still think it's possible the plot of this movie could have happened if she didn't tell Kyubey about that, but it would probably have been quite different. It's possible they would still have wanted to run a test like this to see what happens when an isolated Soul Gem turns, but the big difference would likely be that the test subject wouldn't have been Homura, but instead a magical girl with much weaker willpower, like Sayaka. Although if not her it could have been an engine to introduce entirely new characters to the franchise if the test subject was a magical girl we'd never seen before too. Ultimately, I like the direction they chose with this movie, but thinking about alternatives to it is quite interesting too.

Exactly. It's a deconstruction of the whole messianic archetype concept. It shows that a sacrifice made out of duty ultimately does not erase one's regrets, and it shows that as long as someone remembers you... they will feel for you anyway. It also demonstrates that sometimes, fixing the injustices and cruelty of the world requires someone willing to take upon themselves the burden of doing what's needed to be done, even if it means becoming a "villain". The only way a selfless hero would ever be at peace would be if someone else is taking the burden of guilt.

If we think about the result carefully, madoka just becomes a part of the energy collecting system so that magic girls won't become witches. But magic girls still have to fight with witches. It's just that they will directly die. It looks like she sacrifices herself to save everything and everything will be fine, yet it is a really small change that makes sense. Forgive my poor English if anything is confused.

I've watched quite a few of your reviews, but with this I am now officially subscribed to your channel Arkada. As to what I thought of Rebellions ending, I had about the same reaction as you, only I rather liked the prospect of getting more of this series. The twist drove me up a wall, it's true, but when I stopped to think about it for few seconds, I understood - and quite frankly LOVED - everything that happened. I also then came to a realization that while Madoka was the main character in the original series, This movie had put Homura in the spot light, as she was the only one of our girls that was actually capable of solving the problem. And from this realization I also came the prospect that this means that if and when (stressing WHEN because I'm certain it will) the series continues, it will put Sayaka in the spotlight as due to how the movie concluded, she is the only one who can truly cause the series to continue. And finally this made me think about if this were to continue even further, would they also end up putting Kyouko and Mami into spotlights to round out the quintet, and the more I thought about that possibility... the more I found I want it to happen this way. Just wanted to put that out there.

The ending of this movie is NOT an ending. It just isn't. It's a frigging cliffhanger. A change in the status quo that's fitting for a sequel, not for an ending. It doesn't give any real closure to the characters. Homura's twist makes sense in theory, but in the execution it comes out of nowhere. And no, "she was going insane" doesn't cut it as it's presented in the movie. There was not enough character development, nor even foreshadowing, to make that change feel organic. Not even close. I hope they decide to continue with the story and closing it properly this time. I just hope Urobuchi doesn't have the same writer's block he got with this movie (he had a different ending in mind, but he wasn't satisfied with it. Then Shimbo proposed the ending they did, and he STILL wasn't satisfied with it either).

+XanderVJ We can argue a bit about how fitting Homura's development in the movie can lead to this point. But here's my take. The Homura you see throughout the movie is one close to the despair horizon, yet got her memory fucked up (witches are crazy). To me the most telling point is the flower scene. Homura believed Madoka's words of never wanting to move away from her friends. At that point Homura have realized that this Madoka is a lie; with the Goddess memory being altered by Homura. Yet Homura believed it, to me, that's a sign that she was crazy. Homura was never a paragon of virtue; she tried to kill Sayaka at one point in the original series. The closed off world that the Incubator created to block off the Goddess, I believed, gave Homura the idea that with sufficient power, she could close off the world and overwrite it once more. I've commented that this ending is actually complete. My interpretation is close to Dark Souls' universe. Homura did created a bounded field across the entire universe. But, she did not solved the entropy issue. So the world will die. Knowing Homura (and the song Your Silver Garden), I think she will sacrifice everything in the world, to keep the illusion of a perfect life for Madoka. Until one day, Homura will die, and the empty, dead, cold Universe will greet Madoka.
@903IDFOLEY
@903IDFOLEY 8 жыл бұрын
+Xuan Vinh To Sure we can argue. :) Why shouldn't she believe what Madoka said in the flower fields? The Madoka at that point didn't have her memories altered by Homura: It was Madoka herself that left her memories behind so that she could infiltrate Homura's barrier without reveling anything to the incubators. The Madoka we see was the real Madoka as they even confirmed it by having Kyubey out right say so. The fact they went through the effort to drive this point home means this was a very important plot point. About Homura trying to kill Sayaka... After finding out the truth about witches, did you ever go back and think about _why_ Homura tried to kill Sayaka when she did? Given the fact that Homura could have killed any of them any time she wanted? Homura knew the truth about witches from the start, and she knew full well that after Sayaka refused her help again and again, she was doomed to turn into a witch. Given the circumstances, Homura blowing Sayaka's head off at that point would have been a kindness.

The series was amazing without a doubt, and I understand WHY Homura did what she did, but I mean we can't just end it here. With Madoka's essence being split in 2 and Homura basically being an Anti-God. There is so many things left unanswered. Are the witches back? What did she do to the Incubators? How are the girls interacting now? Please for the love of all things that are holy DON'T end it here. We need CLOSURE.

There's not enough proof to come to a conclusion. There are chances that a sequel will happen and chances it might not. The writer and the director wanted this to continue before this movie was created. However, now after things have slowed down they could have changed their mind. Right now you are in a phase of wanting more because you just finished watching the third movie. Don't worry man, I've been there. KidSnivy69 Well it's not a complete story. But I don't have an issue with that, personally. I think at least for me, needing and wanting more are mutually exclusive. I both wanted and needed this movie, while feeling the franchise needed this movie as well. But in terms of a continuation, I don't personally NEED it (well not anymore, but I think them saying they were going to continue and then if not doing so will be a bit dickish on their part) but I want it. Even just a prequel or adaptation of the various manga would be fine by me. There's a lot of subtle approaches they took to hinting a sequel other than this being a massive cliffhanger. One, Shinbo said in 2011 before the series ended that he wants more slice of life. Two, Gen said that Madoka's story wouldn't end with Rebellion, but he may depart from the franchise and hire a new writer, since he believes a work like Madoka should outlive its creators. Third, Shinbo said that he considers the movie trilogy and TV series to be separate continuities, and as far as sequels go, he would like input from fans and contributions regarding speculations and fanmade promotional materials to be made official. He also said that he wanted to see these characters in action again and that the success of the franchise and their overall development and reception is ultimately based off how fans reacted to them. He then further stated that Inu Curry's work on the movie which included not only witch imagery but also all of the background art and storyboards to evoke the overwhelming feeling of being in a witch barrier throughout the story is a concept he would like to be used in a future TV run. There was also mentions of him saying he wanted to show the descent of Homura in the world without Madoka prior to the film that Homura herself briefly alluded to and the manga adaptation showed part of in a TV episode or OVA. Finally, he concludes by saying if Magica Quartet and Shaft can continue, they definitely want to. Yota Tsuruoka, the sound director, was questioned on why he didn't use the first take of Chiwa Saito's recording of Devil Homura's lines in the last 15 minutes of the movie but included the entire film with that first take in a Bluray extra. He responded by saying that Saito's performance was brilliant, but too perfect in that way. It gave the implication that Homura, who sounded like a stereotypical yandere who had completely snapped, had her entire character come full circle accepting she was the villain and ultimately beyond hope. He had a problem with this because the post-credits scene strongly implies that Homura is remorseful toward having to betray Madoka and the others to create this new world. She also wants to die, preferably through divine retribution by their hands as she sees herself as the most pathetic and vile person in the universe. Tsuruoka said that the story and Homura's character do not match her voice in the first take, as it implies Rebellion is and was the final chapter of PMMM. He and Saito both agree with Magica Quartet that it is merely the beginning of a NEW chapter. This is why the 1st take was changed yet included in the home video release so fans could hear it and draw their own conclusions about Homura's fate and stance in life/mentality. So I actually find all of this reassuring and can't wait to see what they all come out with next. Personally, I feel like Rebellion's ending is a little more hopeful than people give it credit for, because as far as Homura's concerned, she got her happy ending even if it was at the price of her own sanity. She accepted who she was, a demon who could not protect her goddess unless she betrayed her, and would need to be brought to justice anyway. No matter how immoral her actions, she only wants a world where Madoka is happy and free from Kyubey's tyranny. And that's what she got. Homura was the protagonist of the story, and don't we all want to see our protagonist endure an impossible struggle and obtain their goal in the end? Don't we want that character to win? I can't speak for the others though. They alone can decide if they're happy with this world, built upon a selfish sacrifice with selfless intentions. It is the same as what Sayaka said about destroying someone who just wanted to be happy earlier in the film. That's what I really want to see next time. But that's just my take on it. I'm glad that even with that nagging feeling you have, you were still able to enjoy the movie.

Actually, I think Nagisa's feigning ignorance. The fact that she was walking through the pond of purple fluids and laughing like a child while Sayaka and Homura were having their confrontation sort of shows that Homura didn't really factor her into the equation. And tbh, Homura never ultimately found out the truth about Nagisa being part of the Law of Cycles, since she turned into a witch by the time she explained it and was drowning too deep into her despair to probably be listening in on their 'taunts and explanations' to Kyubey (since she'd already done that to him herself moments before she transformed).

I’ll start by saying this…i loved Rebellion. Not the fan-boy-way put understood every twist and turn, theories and mechanics in the movie. Most people who hated the movie and review it do this in such a subjective matter, it makes the movie seem like complete mediocrity. Not even trying to separate facts from opinions. Often twisting facts to fit their cause. You on the other hand did a fantastic job reviewing it. You stated the ending didn’t meet your expectations, gave arguments to why this is so, you made a clear distinction in what are facts and what are your opinions in a very clear fashion. Even though I like the movie, I seriously have to agree with you that this ending needs a continuation/conclusion (rather sooner than late), which we hope fully will get. I believe Sayaka also got development in this film, albeit the after-effects of the development in the last episode of the series. I can't believe that you didn't notice that, Arkada. I loved the ending, though. I feel that if Homura (spoilers): had just gone to heaven with Madoka, that would've been an exceptionally boring ending. Plus, I hate the character of Homura. Always have, even after I first watched the series. I feel that this ending brings her character full-circle, meaning that they actually embraced her true character, and for that, I greatly appreciated it, so I was less outraged by the ending than most people were. Plus, that tidbit about the director telling the writer to rewrite the ending. That was only part of the story, as people keep refusing to read the actual article about what happened in full form. While yes, Gen originally planned to write an ending where Homura went with Madoka, he didn't know how to make it come around. AKA, writer's block. Akiyuki SUGGESTED it to Gen, he didn't FORCE it on him. Turns out, it actually broke his writer's block. They also said that this all happened before a script and storyline was even written, so it's not like they just threw it in at the last minute, and just somehow made it make sense.

Especially as historically I have mostly watched the more grim, adult-centric side of anime via Berserk, Cyber City Oedo etc Also everytime someone mentions bad endings to anime series my first thought instantly jumps to Deathnote....

pious83 If you are looking for dark anime, try Mardock Scramble. I am assuming you're either almost 18 or older, as the series probably shouldn't be watched by anyone younger than 17 at the most. It pretty much takes Blade Runner, Ghost in the Shell, Deus Ex, Casino Royale, Ergo Proxy, and any other show that could be related to massive conspiracy, and then throws them into a blender. It's dark and beautifully animated, with the people who did "K", an anime that basically threw budget constraints to the wind and made everything hyper stylized. You can find the films (english dubbed) on the Itunes website. I hope you check em out.

You always seem to sum up my feelings perfectly, especially considering Nagisa in this case. The way she was hyped I was expecting ALOT more from her but she felt totally unnecessary and nothing would have changed had she not been there at all. Bebe was a nice addition for Mami's sake but Nagisa was just a merch ploy. The ending annoyed me quite a bit but for the reasons you gave. I'm surprised you didn't mention Sayaka considering she played quite a big part but I can understand.

I think the best way to look at Rebellion is that its brilliant in concept but its execution is flawed. This is the ending the series should of had as it finishes the subversion the magical girl show and is very much inline with the characters in show. However since it played the twist as a twist instead off a steady dramatic buildup the emotional payoff isn't really there. Yes there is foreshadowing of events to come that give the audience hints as to why this happened but these are only noticeable in retrospect and a more gradual less subtle character progression would have made the ending more effective. Also the rules of the new world aren't clearly explained which is a major flaw since it doesn't allow us to judge Homuras action with complete knowledge of all its effects. That said the concepts put forth are fascinating and its also probably the most atmospheric anime Ive seen since Angels Egg

TruthinessChibiOtaku I think you could have gotten this development in the films run time. Dont get me wrong I really love this movie. I just think if these 2 problems had been fixed we could of had an film masterpiece. I also think if the ending to the second film should have been altered. I'm pretty sure Nagisa was added because of merch, but also because Charlotte was, indeed, the most popular witch. Also for fans to be able to ship someone with Mami (as bromance or romantic etc. ) because Mami felt kinda left out after all the shipping began and the girls were paired up. Now even in official 'romantic' art (okay the ships are pretty canon, Rebellion kinda proves this ) of the characters, they are coupled together as Homura x Madoka, Sayaka x Kyoko and now as well Nagisa x Mami, which is rather cute.
@903IDFOLEY
@903IDFOLEY 10 жыл бұрын
I agree with this. *SPOLIERS FOR REBELLION IN-BOUND* It also means Mami can have a decent ending in Homura's new world, being paired off with Nagisa and no longer alone. And while she never says it, I think Nagisa probably came along for this very reason, to make amends for the fact she murdered Mami horribly in the original universe. Others reasons include merchandising as mentioned, but also for the WTF factor and the hype a new character generates during the build up before the release. But in terms of the overall story, Nagisa's inclusion is absolute proof that the Circle is some kind of after-life, one where all girls taken in keep their individuality to a degree. Had Sayaka returned alone to aid Madoka in saving Homura, this would have been unclear as it could mean Madoka had given Sayaka some kind of preferential treatment (which is how some people see the TV ending), which in turn would change the very nature of the Circle itself.
@Wishfulldreamsofhope
@Wishfulldreamsofhope 10 жыл бұрын
903IDFOLEY Agreed 100%. The only reason people probably feel that Nagisa is out of place in the story, is because she never had that much screen time as a magical girl. But hopefully, whenever the next movie after Rebellion comes out, it would contain more of Nagisa's character as well, so we could get to know her better. Personally I think she serves her purpose and she's a cute addition, I don't have any problem with her being in the movie at all ´v`

After spending almost an hour reading comments (nerdy i know :p) i wanna throw in my two cents. In the series, witches are portrayed as tragic characters who are to be pitied because they "fell victim" to the consequences of their wishes. IN Rebellion, it feels like that whole concept got turned on it's head. Instead of Homura "falling victim" to her wish to protect Madoka, she fully embraced the concept of becoming a witch/demon so that she could create the labyrinth world where she gets exactly what she wished for. The ending didn't feel like a cliffhanger to me because honestly, as long as Homura keeps Madoka an innocent girl that can be protected all the time, then she's perfectly happy with every day being exactly the same and normal. I guess the only question I have is what would happen (as shown in the little hints) if Madoka ever realizes that she's supposed to be a god and that Homura took that away from her? There's where the next movie should start in my opinion.

I could see them coming out with another series/movie for this and finishing the whole thing with that, and hopefully using the ending they had planned (at least partially). Especially now since the manga has so many spin offs that it's not like they are going to run out of material to show the fans if they end the series, especially when the spin offs take place way before or during the Madoka Magica series.

Am I the only one who thinks this movie is completely pointless and is basically just SHAFT's way of milking a franchise that's slowly losing its integrity? I hated Madoka, but at least I can safely say that it had a proper conclusion. I mean, Madoka fucking turns into a concept and is erased from the minds of everyone BUT Homura. How the fuck can you make a sequel to that?! It pisses me off when people compare this to End of Evangelion. End of Evangelion wasn't perfect, but it was NECESSARY. Evangelion's final two episodes were shit because of the lack of budget, so it had no proper resolution until the movie was released. But Madoka had a proper budget AND a proper conclusion. How can Gen Urobuchi and the blokes at shaft justify making a sequel to a show that already had a ceremonious and relatively airtight conclusion?
@903IDFOLEY
@903IDFOLEY 9 жыл бұрын
How? By pointing out the TV ending was actually incomplete. Since the wish of the main protagonist, and the one person in the universe who does remember Madoka, was never actually realised? Homura herself makes that (re)discovery during the movie itself: During the scene in the flower field, Homura realised that Madoka could not truly have been happy with her ultimate fate, and that Homura, as Madoka's sworn protector, had utterly failed her. In my opinion, this scene also served as a "duh..." moment for the viewers who so readily accepted the TV ending despite this incredibly important detail...
@lamarmcneil5655
@lamarmcneil5655 9 жыл бұрын
903IDFOLEY But I don't really get it. Wasn't Madoka doing what she wanted? Which was to be useful. So why did Homura do what she did? Not only that, but she put her in danger just by putting Madoka back into a world of witches without memory of her power. And Homura had messed with the universe so much and now she's literally the entity "Evil". She's gone way too far. I think it would have been better if Homura would never have remembered at all. Or maybe she never should have told Kyubey (the devil of everything) about Madoka. I feel like it was actually a happier ending with Sakaya and Madoka serving as the Cycle thing or whatever. Then for them to come back to Earth. And *SPOILER ALERT* Madoka simply dies again in Oriko. So really Homura failed epically just by bringing her back. And she had to reset the timeline again. When will she learn that Madoka can't be happy on Earth? He fate is always death on Earth. She should have just let her be God. I swear, Homura used to be like me favorite character. But now, I don't like her because she's evil. Literally the entity "evil".
@TruthinessChibiOtaku
@TruthinessChibiOtaku 9 жыл бұрын
Prince Asim Homura's not evil at all. And just because she says so doesn't make it true in the slightest. She's never been the most reliable narrator, since she's virtually an avatar for the audience/Urobuchi. That's one of the other more subtle things about Madoka Magica most people don't understand. Madoka was also kind of forced into that situation, even if it was a wish she wanted, it was out of duty. She tells Homura she'd never want to be separated from anyone she cares about. Granted, she says this as an amnesiac God in human form to her beloved fallen earthbound angel, but in the dream world, that is the real Madoka who got to live her life over as a human being for longer than 14 years speaking. We don't know Madokami's POV yet, but she willingly passed her memories on to Sayaka and Nagisa to deceive Kyubey and live her life as a human so as not to alarm Homulily's subconsciously of her presence. Oh please. Please do not tell me that Madoka deserves to die or become a God when she's only 14 in order to be 'happy'. Please do not tell me that you ACTUALLY think her martyrdom is a GOOD thing. Because its not. That level of transcendental selfless sacrificial behavior is actually even more harmful than any selfish or 'evil' act Homura has ever committed.
@lamarmcneil5655
@lamarmcneil5655 9 жыл бұрын
No Homura is literally "evil". She's like how Madoka was Hope. She's evil. And if Madoka is not Godoka, then that means witches exist. So Makoda is still going to become the most powerful witch ever. When Kyubey said another universe would be destroyed, this is what he meant. All the people she stopped from becoming witches are going to become them anyway. Because of Homura, everyone is going to die and become a witch. So is Madoka. And when she does that, she'll destroy Earth. The exact same way she saved it before. "It's only natural".
@TruthinessChibiOtaku
@TruthinessChibiOtaku 9 жыл бұрын
Prince Asim Her definition of evil and what she did to the world don't even properly fit together. Shall I take you through the Dictionary description of the term as both an adjective and a noun? adjective: evil 1. profoundly immoral and malevolent. "his evil deeds" (of course they are, but that's how she thinks of herself and expects others to see her. She's a witch, after all) synonyms: wicked, bad, wrong, immoral, sinful, foul, vile, dishonorable, corrupt, iniquitous, depraved, reprobate, villainous, nefarious, vicious, malicious; More antonyms: good, virtuous 2. (of a force or spirit) embodying or associated with the forces of the devil. "we have been driven out of the house by this evil spirit" harmful or tending to harm. "the evil effects of high taxes" synonyms: cruel, mischievous, pernicious, malignant, malign, baleful, vicious; More antonyms: good, beneficial (again, she calls herself a Devil because she defied God, that doesn't mean she IS one) 3. of something seen or smelled) extremely unpleasant. "a bathroom with an evil smell" synonyms: unpleasant, disagreeable, nasty, horrible, foul, disgusting, filthy, vile, noxious "an evil smell" antonyms: pleasant (while she may call herself this all she wants, she doesn't smell bad and she's not a horrible or disgusting person. She's only human.) noun: evil 1. profound immorality, wickedness, and depravity, especially when regarded as a supernatural force. "the world is stalked by relentless evil" synonyms: wickedness, bad, badness, wrongdoing, sin, ill, immorality, vice, iniquity, degeneracy, corruption, depravity, villainy, nefariousness, malevolence; More a manifestation of this, especially in people's actions. (Okay, yes, she did mess up the natural order, but so did Madoka and the others. And could you really consider the world filled with 'immortality and wickedness' when she brought people back from the dead to live normal and happy lives?) plural noun: evils "the evil that took place last Thursday" synonyms: abomination, atrocity, obscenity, outrage, enormity, crime, monstrosity, barbarity (I can admittedly, see herself degrading to this or trying to do various things to make her seem evil or barbaric. The whole 'make the one I love hate me so I can be sacrificed in their place' principle has been done to death in anime and cosmic horror fiction. It never works out like the person intends, but the characters still go through with it anyway. See Revolutionary Girl Utena, Kannazuki no Miko, Future Diary and Code Geass as examples of works where protagonists 'play' the villain) "the evils of war" something that is harmful or undesirable. "sexism, racism, and all other unpleasant social evils" synonyms: harm, pain, misery, sorrow, suffering, trouble, disaster, misfortune, catastrophe, affliction, woe, hardship "nothing but evil would ensue" Okay. That definition is again, something she may THINK regarding her own self due to how much self-loathing and regret she has, but not what she actually is. Homura wishes for an end to all sorrow and misery. That is the world Madoka wants, thereby it is also the world SHE wants. If she was truly 'evil', then why would she bother to enclose the entire known Universe and the Law of Cycles within her witch barrier so that Kyubey wouldn't get to it and all of the people within would be able to live blissfully and happily unaware of their past lives/memories/things and people they lost? You forget that the entire point of this movie was to show how much of a hypocrite Homura was in everything she did and said, just like a normal human being thrust into such a situation. And when Homura says she'll destroy the world when she's defeated all the Wraiths, she's bluffing. Even if she does do that, she expects and is waiting for Madoka to strike her down before she has the chance to even try. And of COURSE witches still exist in this world, because witches and devils are MAGICAL GIRLS. Homura's a witch, Sayaka's a witch, Bebe's a witch, even Mami and Kyouko are witches. That isn't a defiance of anything Madoka did, the world's no different than Madoka's other than the fact that Homura is in charge and Madoka, Sayaka and Nagisa are back on Earth. You can't take everything at face value. That was the whole point of this movie, to not do that, and you sort of missed it.

It would be fairly easy to rework Puella Magi Kazumi Magica: The Innocent Malice to fit into a continuing series. In a revised plot she could have got her amnesia in the "ideal" Madoka time line, but starts to get it back in the new Homura one. The disconnection between her current and remembered realities would then drive her quest quest.

Also more Mami is more good.

George Mason I actually like it better not knowing. I loved the ending and based on the tone of madoka magica feel like the ending makes you sort of... Maintain how the series makes you feel while you watched it and continues to do so when you recollect it. The ending before was sort of almost a happy ever after. Although things are still kind of tough, they're significantly better. Which is the opposite of the tone of the show. This way, I feel the anime finally keeps it's tone even in it's end days. (If this is where it does.)

califilipino No, I'd say if you're a true fan of Madoka Magica you should watch it anyway and then formulate your thoughts on it. Then if you don't like it, you don't have to concern yourself with it AND then avoid any continuations/future installments like the plague. The point is that the ending is NOT supposed to be happy, although I think its far less depressing (FROM SEVERAL POINTS OF VIEW) than the end of the original series. And its not exactly 'devoid of hope' either. Watch it and judge for yourself, because this is honestly not a film you can take at face value.

Homura Rebellion in the film, suffers from despair to will to be oneself. The last and lowest form of despair is the desire "In despair to will to be oneself." This last form of despair is also referred to by Kierkegaard as "demonic despair" (Note that the term demonic is used in the Classical Greek Sense, not the modern sense). In this form of despair, the individual finds him or herself in despair, understands they are in despair, seeks some way to alleviate it, and yet no help is forthcoming. As a result, the self becomes hardened against any form of help and "Even if God in heaven and all the angels offered him aid, he would not want it." At this level of despair the individual revels in their own despair and sees their own pain as lifting them up above the base nature of other humans who do not find themselves in this state. This is the least common form of despair and Kierkegaard claims it is mostly found in true poets. This despair can also be called the despair of defiance, as it is the despair that strikes out against all that is eternal. One last note is that as one travels further down the forms of despair, the number of people in each group becomes fewer.

Spoilers So I like the ending, but let's get one thing straight. If homura hadn't gone back in time literally everything would be okay. No homurademon, no world destroying witch that madoka had the risk of becoming before the end of the series. I'm on kyuubeys side now. At least he has the excuse of not understanding anything but logic.

does any branch of Aniplex distribute in that region? if not i would suspect you are out of luck because judging from the way Aniplex does things....they are perfectly content to be the sole distributor of shows and overcharge because they can with that nice monopoly

I watched it just now, the ending DOES kind of come out from some point over the edge of the universe in the direction of the left field. The rest was great, I agree with Arkada there.

Hi there. This was a really excellent review and other than the fact that you neglected to mention Sayaka's extraordinary and justified comeback and characterization expansion from the original series, I agree on a majority of your points. I understand why the ending is a bit jarring, it was supposed to be in a way and despite how much I love this movie I still feel that way but mostly because that was the point and also I feel a very large mixture of disappointment/empathy/sympathy for Homura in her situation, also the point. But hey, I love tragedy. And I think this had a better ending than EoE because its 'not' the ending and as much as I love End of Eva, it was FAR TOO ambiguous for my liking. Although I also understand completely where Anno was going there as well. Oh well. Anyway, as a side note, I'd like to correct you on something about Urobuchi being forced into writing this ending by Shinbo. That interview was mistranslated. He didn't even have a script until after he finished the show. He didn't even write one. And he had no idea what the hell to do for a continuation until Urobuchi said that Madoka wouldn't be happy with her responsibilities as God at her age. So Urobuchi decided to keep things going by making them enemies. Why? Because in order to actually make Madoka happy, Homura would have to do something for her that she might not approve of in the end. But with the threat of Kyubey interfering with the Law of Cycles and what Madoka told her in the field of lilies about not wanting to separate from her friends or family, Homura felt that she had no choice but to either die a witch and let Kyubey get to Madoka or become the opposite existence to protect her. Which is why I also disagree with you saying the ending sort of came out of nowhere because there was 20 minutes left before the film's end when the 'twist' (which wasn't really a twist in my eyes) came and all of the stuff that came before it was subtle but justifiably effective foreshadowing. I didn't care for the original series ending myself, tbh. I actually have the interview myself because it came in the special supplementary Materials Booklet with my Rebellion Bluray. One of the websites I ordered it from gave me an English translation booklet to help me read it, so if you didn't get that I'd understand why you didn't know all of that. There's a message in there where Gen says he couldn't even write the script until that suggestion was given to him. He wanted to continue, but he didn't know how. There's no pressuring to begin with. He likes this film and how it turned out. "Some will beautify it and some will revile it. I think I may have challenged the morality of the viewers. But the beautiful thing is that Madoka Magica has developed into a franchise with such supporting fans and I couldn't have done it without Shinbo-san, Iwakami-san and Aoki-san. Madoka Magica isn't 'mine' anymore..." And yes, that's why they made the recap films, so that you COULD piece together everything from start to finish. Shinbo also said specifically that the recap movies are meant to be part of their own continuity along with Rebellion, so the movie trilogy and TV show are meant to be separate. He does say this is because of small things like focusing more on Homura and Sayaka and how they look what with the latter's hairpin and the former getting her own opening in the second movie and barely any screentime for Mami because Homura doesn't know/care about her enough...but hey, it works for me. And they're probably going to make another season after this, which I'm fine with. I did think the movie could've been better as a second season, they just apparently created a four hour long script and there's no way they could make the movie that long without splitting the story. It was a bit abrupt, but I'm okay with that because they did it SO they could make the continuation. They even said possibly a 24 episode series as well. Hopefully no filler unless its justified in canon. But yeah, that's all I really have to say on the matter. Otherwise, great movie, solid review and hope to watch more Madoka and some of your other reviews for other anime as well in the future. And I should start Fate/Zero soon too, probably after I finish Phantom. Later!

I think the ending would be better if it didn't completely butcher Homura'a character and if it had been explained a lot further. I still have mixed feelings over it really.

Butcher? She acts like she always has. She's selfish, doesn't care about anyone other than Madoka, and like all the girls (Except Madoka) make a selfish wish but not admit it. She doesn't want what Madoka wants, she wants what she wants, Madoka be damned. Homura was always like this, she was clearly not happy in the ending of the show when Madoka made her wish. She probably would have done this back then if she could have.

TheJaranuJanic Thank you. This is what I have been trying to tell people but haven't been able to put it into words as well as you have. It was not a bad twist, and not a bad ending at all... it just wasn't an ending, and that's the issue. Other than that, I liked the movie just as much as I did the series. Which is a lot.
@BeethovenWasGerman

TheJaranuJanic No, I acknowledge that she's selfish. It's more about the way she acted, rather that what she did. Like how she smiled manically and teased the other characters with her new power. I think it would have made more sense if she was a bit less flashy about it. That's what I'm trying to say here.

NeedlesAndFingers Flashy? They don't know that it's her. She's just being spiteful, which doesn't seem out-of-character. Actually, I'm not really convinced that she's being "selfish". Of course, she doesn't want what's best for everyone, but she wants what she thinks is best for Madoka, and the other girls seem to be doing fairly well in her new world, even if she was spiting them. I agree with Alberto Perez though, it doesn't really seem like an ending at all.

NeedlesAndFingers SPOILER(I'll put it right here just for safety's sake) I think she's trying really hard to look like the bad guy. That way she can easlily accept punishment. As we can see with her witch form, she actually wants to be punished by others. She is incredibly determinated in making her wish coming true, and she will do anything if necessary, but she still can't forgive herself and her actions. That's my opinion anyway...

I think an ending that is open interpretation is the best kind of ending for a series, and especially with a movie! It's the way a piece of media get's people thinking. What's in the briefcase in Pulp Fiction? Does the totem fall over in Inception? All of these things got people to keep thinking about the movie they watch after it ended.

The whole reason the movie ended the way it did is exactly because they want to make a sequal. And with Madoka still being extremely popular despite the divided opinions on Rebellion's ending, a sequal should just be a matter of time.

AngelsofScythe A series actually needs to stay popular if a sequel is to make money. So you can't just throw in a shitty ending and expect the fans to lap it up... This is especially true for Madoka fans, who in general tend to like to think a little more than the fans of a average shonen anime. If a sequel was solely the aim, there are countless more simple and less controversial endings the production team could have gone with. It took a lot of guts to go with _this_ ending, and if people actually look pass the surface, it is clear a lot of thought had gone into it. PapaLuigi3000 That "executive" who suggested the script change was the director - Akiyuki Shinbo, a very experienced and capable anime director who is every bit as famous as Urobuchi. Even if you disagree with his decision, I think it's safe to say he actually knows what he's doing. One thing to clarify is the ending change was made during development (i.e. before even a single frame has been drawn), and not added in the last second like some people try to make it sound. The film was carefully produced around the the new ending, and scenes throughout the movie are intricately tied to the reason why the ending happened the way it did.

The whole thing about Gen's ending being overridden is something that gets misinterpreted a lot. The truth is, it wasn't like the big bad corporate overlords held a gun to his head and forced him to change the ending. According to an interview, it went more along the lines of: Shinbo: How's the script coming along? Gen: I haven't even started...I mean I have the basic idea of how it to play out: the opening, the investigation, the final battle, and then I want it to end with Homura ascending with Madoka. Give it a nice clean resolution, but nothing seems to WORK. Whatever I write just seems 'off'. Shinbo: Well, how about we go with this: [[Spoiler Expunged]]. That way, we can continue the story if we want. Gen: ...That's not a bad idea. Yeah, that could work! I can work with that! Thanks, Shinbo! *Writer's Block: Broken*

I totally agree with you on everything here, dude. The ending is what bothered me, but I loved the rest of it. I remember basically yelling "THAT'S IT???!" when it was over. OTL Here's hoping they make just one more release of a thing to tie it up. Madoka's one of my favorite series ever, and I'd like it to end without loose ties. =w= Also, happy holidaymas. \o/

I think if there is one more series to wrap it up, it would be perfect. I was disturbed by the ending but I still loved it. It was rushed but seems like a natural progression of everything that has happened since this series appears to be a "no hope" kind of story. As you can tell I am really trying to avoid spoiling the series as the spoilers are major... but man I am really looking forward to another season/movie to see if we can finally get a happy ending with these characters
