Today I want to talk about Grabcad Fusion 360 and how to modify the CAD model from Grabcad once you have imported it into Fusion 360. I'll show you how.
Please Note:- This is a follow up to the previous video where we downloaded a Solidworks assembly from Grabcad. We’ll shortly do an example where we download a more generic type of CAD file.

I moved from Shotcut to Resolve 16 in order to improve workflow and quality which it does but it needs more grunt. You're right, if this persists I may have to go back until I've saved up.

Thanks AR for the great videos. If you can explain exactly Why we use a midplane and axis on the handle, that would be even better. Also what the reason is for the random construction line on the sketch, 45degree angle but why, Thank you good sir

There are always many ways to achieve the same goal in CAD. The more complex the project the more alternative methods there can be. The reason I put a mid-plane in the crank was to position the knob and its shaft in the middle of the crank. I could have used a concentric constraint with the semi-circular end of the crank but I wanted it to be really clear that I was positioning the knob. As for the 45 degree construction line, my purpose was due to a bit of intuition, I could have confirmed it mathematically but since its a hand-operated mechanism I wasn't too concerned if my intuition wasn't right; I thought that there would be a mechanical advantage in having the knob out of line with the crank, to make it easier to turn the mechanism.

At 4:52 when you draw the construction line from the lower right circle, your screen shows the dot for the center that you can snap the line to, but I don't have that. Is there a preference that I need to enable? I blazed through the 16 part tutorials over the past few days and they were so great compared to other videos I have tried to follow (and then given up on) over the years.
@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360
@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 4 жыл бұрын
That’s very kind, thanks Matt. As for the line snapping to the centre, I doubt if it’s a preference. I remember that it all happened very fast, the construction line was already selected when I clicked the Coincident constraint and so it was just one more click to action it. I normally expect to click the tool and then each of the items I want to bring together. I've done a couple of dry runs just now and confirmed that you can use the coincident constraint to move sketch entities to the point of origin whether there is geometry already there or if its empty. Come to think of it, didn't you use the point of origin to place the sketch circle for the first pin we created there in the centre? Let me know if any of this is helping.

@@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 Thank you for the quick response, I made a short video to show you what I'm seeing (or rather not seeing) when I try to draw that construction line. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4mnZJt5gs6ekNU

Yes Matt, you sketched the crank very well and yes, the line you drew in a separate sketch was correct. Your recovery from whatever that problem is was just fine, you drew the line and manipulated it as I'd done even though your 2nd sketch was on a different plane. Its time for me to confess now that I didn't put the construction line to use, I should have put a 45 degree angle dimension between that line and the crank sketch but I could see that I'd need to backtrack a bit to make it work. Lazy. In a future video I'll show how to delete constraints to free up for an adjusting dimension - I'll cover what I should have shown here. Thanks for clarifying your question with a screencast, that was well done.

It's a preference configuration. forums.autodesk.com/t5/fusion-360-design-validate/can-t-snap-to-point-on-other-sketch/m-p/9481392?lightbox-message-images-9479177=762352iE5A62378012BAAAA#M215449 Now I can snap a line to the center of the circle on the other plane.

At the 7:29 point in the video you select the midplane to sketch a circle at the axis of the end of the pin. When I try this the cursor will not snap to this point. I had a similar problem at the 4:56 point when I tried to draw the construction line it will not snap to the center of the circle. What am I doing wrong?
@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360
@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 Жыл бұрын
Good question Gerry, firstly a very unsatisfying answer; this is a hand crank and just like a pistol grip or any other kind of handle, there is no right answer in terms of precision and so it doesn't matter a twisty where that sphere ends up. But now to take your question seriously for all of those cases where precision does matter, you must download the free PDF with all the 16 drawings. In the appendix you will find a number of pages, screenshots of my preference settings. Go through all of those to make your Fusion 360 work like mine does. There is one on the Design page which says something like 'Auto project edges on reference'. I just tested it on and off and I get your experience when its toggled off.

@@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 Thank you for the prompt response, and for the great tutorials. I watched several other videos before I found yours, it's one thing to know a subject, but that doesn't mean you can teach it effectively. You obviously have experience teaching. I did download the PDF with the16 part drawings but there was no appendix. I did find the setting you mentioned in my preferences & turned it on, hopefully that will help. Thanks again!

When I import the 3 fusion files from mediafire and upload them into Fusion360, I get three different files. This seems to be different from the upload from GrabCAD where everything is in a single file. How do I merge the components from each file into a single file? \\Answer:\\ I now have found the "Insert in current design" option, so the three are now in the same file/design. However I still need to place them properly relative to each other.

Yes that's right queenslander, the next video is about bottom up assembly. As far as I know you can import a Solidworks assembly (in other license types) but the joints don't work. They need to be reassembled with Fusion joints in order to move and then animate which is where we're going soon. The value here is in learning to assemble which is why I left out the "dead" assembly file.

@@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 Hi Arnold ... so in this video you modify a multipart drawing .. and as i've only got the personal version of F360, ive followed your bouncing ball and downloaded via media fire ... and it downloads the base , driving wheel & wheel in file extensions .SLDPRT and the multipart mechanism in .SLDASM. When i try to open any of these, it does so in a session within F360 website (a tab named Fusion Team) where i can see the parts, and rotate them ... but not much else. The .stp file downloads and opens as i would expect. What's a girl to do ?
@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360
@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 4 жыл бұрын
queenslander, I'm quite confused here, I checked on the Mediafire download, I intended to make just three files available there, all of them part files with a .f3d extension. I've just confirmed that this is the case, I wonder if you have inadvertently opened the Solidworks version instead of the Fusion version? I have not included an assembly file because the video I'm currently editing today, shows you how to assemble the three Fusion parts. That one should be published within a day or two. For you to follow along with the Modify Grabcad video you only need to open the file named "Geneva Driving Wheel.3fd"

George, keep experimenting, try doing a simple square or rectangle which is well away from the axis of rotation (so you end up with a donut) and then work on shapes where the axis is on the side of your sketch resulting in a revolved solid. Keep in touch and let me know how that goes.
