We switched from TT to Mr. D math for geometry and pre-algebra for my older kiddos. They are doing so much better with it! And the interaction that they can have by emailing the teacher for questions is a HUGE benefit! Glad you found a math program that should work better for your older kiddos. My daughter thrived with Shormann! She did Algebra 1 w/ Integrated Geometry and Algebra II w/ Integrated Geometry. The ONLY reason we aren't using it this year is because she has moved to an online live class. Otherwise, we would still be using it. I also switched my sixth grader this year to Saxon and also using Nicole the Math Lady along with her grading and so far so good! She watches a lesson and has to write out all of the math problems in her notebook but then she enters her grades for each problem online and gets immediate feedback on if it is correct or not. As the parent, I can set it up for how many attempts I want her to get (can be different for the daily work and quizzes/tests). I can also assign only even or odd problems. Saxon and Shormann are closely related. Hope everyone has a great year!
@tamimcgraw87353 жыл бұрын
Not sure if you saw already, but Shormann can be considered an honors level class if it is completed in one typical school year (because it is actually 1.5 credits). They are essentially doing a year and a half worth of work in one school year so it is considered accelerated. If they take more than a typical year it would be considered a "normal" class. Shormann has all of the info online so you could print it out for a portfolio if needed. I will be honest and say that I haven't looked at it since last school year, so don't take my word for it lol.

I did the same thing with my high schoolers. We jumped from teaching textbooks algebra 1 with my oldest to Saxon algebra 1 (yes, she took algebra 1 twice). She was ahead with TT and took her second year of algebra 1 in 9th grade. I was looking ahead at dual enrollment and wanted her to do well on the placement test - which she did. We used Saxon for algebra 1 and 2 until we got to Advanced mathematics and I listened to Shormann math’s perspective on why his precalculus with trig would be more up to date for the SAT’s (we had been using his videos for Saxon). We switched to Shormann precalculus with trig for my oldest and moved my middle child into Shormann algebra 2. He then went on and finished Shormann precalculus with trig his junior year. I was happy with the quality and teaching. I will say though, that the lessons in precalculus take sometimes two days to finish. 🤪

He did fine with the reading part, but unfortunately needed a lot of my help with the workbook pages. It was frustrating the whole year. I decided to let my 2nd son try it. He is such a slow reader, I ended up reading most of the lessons to him. He did better on the daily work pages. We switched from TT after having the same experience you had. I started noticing my kiddos trying to do every problem in their head and then getting frustrated when they are constantly making mistakes. Also we kept having issues with the 4.0 app/update and that is very frustrating when you are trying to teach 3 other kiddos and keep a toddler busy. We are a ACE family for the most part, so for my older 2 in the 7th and 9th grade we have switched back to ACE for math for this year. My younger 2 who are in 1st and 5th are doing the new TGTB math. So far it is working for us. I would love to know how the Masterbooks math curriculum works out as that is another one I considered trying.

Great info for when my kids will be high school age. I’ve been using Horizon as well. My 7 & 8 year old are good for now, but…one thing I find very important is whether the child likes or learns best with a spiral or mastery model. My daughter is behind in math and the Horizon (spiral) is too much. And then the stuff she does already know, keeps coming around and is a waste of time. I decided to switch to a math program I had originally used which focuses on a mastery model and is also not heavily teacher led. Math Mammoth. I am hoping that putting her back into this program will help her a lot more and speed up her skills.

This is so timely, thank you for sharing! I have also used Horizons and switched to TT at the older grade levels. My daughter is a senior this year and she participates in a local Christian private school's homeschool program, so that she can play highschool sports with them. We submit our curriculum choices and samples of work, ect. I was told at our meeting this year that her TT math would be fine for their highschool graduation requirements, but next near, when my son will enter highschool, TT will no longer be an acceptable curriculum to meet their math requirements 😬. So I've already started looking for another option that is online but more challenging than TT. So thank you so much! I'll be looking forward to your update later in the year.

I would love an update later in the year! We have done levels 3-6 with 2 of my children in teaching textbooks and have found it to be way easier than good and the beautiful math. I do like the challenge of TGTB, but it was too teacher-intensive. I plan to use the new math soon from them for my younger children. I want my children to also have an online math because I don't have time in the day to teach every math lesson. You are right about this past year with TT....it was a nightmare switching to 4.0 and it drives me crazy that there are incorrect problems! We have only come across 2 ever, but it will also count the problem wrong many times when you put in an extra 0 like 06 instead of 6 or 1.40 instead of 1.4. those are the same number, so it bugs me. But yes, it's hard to find something that is similar priced. Other curriculums will be 2, 3, or even 4x the price of TT.

I actually don't bother watching the videos of people complaining about a curriculum, because each family is different and what may work for some may not work for others. For instance, I'm doing science with my preschooler because she's ready for it, while others may frown upon it.
@angelelle30703 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. My son is 7 now but he was ready and begging to learn science even when he was 3 1/2 or 4. It was an interest and so we've been using different science curriculum for him since K and we are always going off on tangents together to learn. Honestly he's mostly on a 2nd or 3rd grade level for most subjects but I get him 4th-6th grade science because he's learned so much and retains it all. It's amazing but that's one of the joys of homeschool. We get to do what works for OUR kiddos, curriculum included ❤️

I have six kids some do great in math and others believe that math is mental abuse to humans. 😂 we have used principle of mathematics with the videos for less reading and more visual help. We enjoyed it. I think it’s a great fit after horizons math. I feel MB math options are really strong for middle and high school and has a great biblical worldview. We currently also use Shormann Math and really like how he explains things, how he encourages taking notes, you get a bit of history, and his biblical worldview as well! It’s also neat that it feels very college prep even in how things are graded. Plus getting three credits with the purchase of just algebra one and algebra two because the geometry is woven into it is wonderful and so practical for ACT/SAT testing. I also like the length of time you have for your subscription being two years. All that said, we used TT for years and also switched, but like you said TT has its benefits as well! Hope it’s a smooth transition for y’all! Blessings!!

But as a researcher, I want to know why some curriculum didn’t work bc so many curriculum videos are sponsored. So as a viewer, it’s helpful to know why people quit using….like what things should I know that is hard to tell from all the “pro” videos….so I find those videos helpful at times. Same. That’s why i love Ashlee’s content because of the detail she gives about the products. So many positive (and sponsored) reviews gush in very general terms like, “it works so well for our family!” but isn’t specific about why or how. So if a child has completed algebra 1 with another curriculum (teaching textbooks) and has had no geometry where do you have them start with this math?

I need math video curriculum for division does anyone have suggestions? My kids love logical and practical. I am looking at BJU but I am open to suggestions (I would like it to weave in God).

It seems to me that the videos titled "why I quit __ curriculum" are very duplicitous. They are using a curriculum name to further their own name and "fame" while bashing said curriculum. And all the people who also don't like that curriculum watch and join in on the bashing. I just don't like those videos either. Thanks for being so great!

Is there anyone here planning on leaving algebra out of their whole curriculum?

What do you mean by leave out algebra? It's foundational for going any farther in math, so it'd be hard to skip it and still teach/learn higher math concepts.

I refuse to watch those kinds of videos because they are so click bait and I always think it’s super rude to put a curriculum company on blast because it didn’t work for you. Everyone runs their homeschool differently so of course not every curriculum is going to be the right fit for your family!
