I totally relate! I keep going back to this video! Every time I get caught up in fashion and needing to buy that next item that will be perfect I come back here and remind myself of these truths. Thank you!

I relate to you so truly! "If I just get x, y, or z then everything will be perfect; my wardrobe and my life." Which is totally not realistic. Totally loved this video!

We live in a consumer driven society. If we all choose to believe we are good enough & have enough, who will buy all the clothes, makeup & diet programs. Plus the better cars & bigger homes fully renovated & filled with stylish decor. Imagine what we could instead do with our time, talents and resources. Great video, thanks for sharing your heart ♡

Full agree about how clothing, acquiring new items, etc. can take up mental and emotional space. I switched to a capsule wardrobe after coming to that conclusion myself, and every time I open my closet I want to downsize even more.

Wow! Thank you for your honesty! After praying for the Lord really do a work of getting rid of sin from my life, I am being convicted of spending on myself. Clothing is not particularly tough for me, but it can be from time to time. I find books and ecourses to be my idols, as well as things to contribute to my health. I actually just made a commitment Saturday for a no spend year except for my birthday and Christmas. Then just this morning I saw the Daily Connoisseur’s video about rebounding and immediately started thinking about how I really really really want a high quality rebounder and would totally love to upgrade from the one I have. Oh my! This will be a good thing for me this year!!! Godliness with contentment is great gain! I Timothy 6:6 ♥️

Hi! Joy, I think It's wonderful that you have decided to be so open and honest about your feelings. As a christian, I've been observing Lent and I've been having some of the same ones. Society is so driven with the got to have it, want it, need it, right now or the next big thing, we're not stopping to think how it affects us. I know to make myself feel better about family issues, I have a tendency to shop. Purchasing stuff I don't need, want and have to ask myself why I even made the purchase. It's not big money, but I to feel guilty in the end. So I'm working on me, this year. It feels good to just be simply me again. I wish you many Blessings, Peace and love and with all the encouragement that you give us, My wish for you is to receive it ten fold. God Bless you guys.

I noticed in the comments another viewer saying how much you sharing encourages her and that's how I feel - you really do encourage me and you put into words the things that I have found difficult to wrap my head around. I have been struggling to let go of the need to acquire more and I have also been struggling with letting go of excess things (even though I really want to do this). After praying about this, I discovered your videos and I am moving forward (slowly but surely)!

Wow, I can completely relate to this but with makeup. Even though I don't wear or buy a ton of makeup it does take up a lot of head & heart space by watching tutorials, browsing Sephora, or looking up products. I too am a person who, without realizing it, thinks that this is it...this will bring me joy or make me feel beautiful. Thank you so much for putting this video out there.

You may have already covered this, but where do you find cute, feminine but practical dresses that you can "mom" in? My husband would like to see me wear more dresses, but I can't find anything that I feel comfortable wearing every day! I've loved your blog for years--since you lived in Indonesia--, and it's super fun to see your face with these vids! :)

I have made a similar decision but in a different way: after losing lots of weight after having babies I have had to buy lots of new clothes. But I have committed to only buy from thrift stores. And I have been decluttering everything in our house, including clothes, so that we only own things that we love, enjoy, and use!

If you're crazy, then I guess I am too! I made the very same decision a few months ago. You articulated, beautifully, how I've been feeling about my wardrobe. Your deep honesty is SO appreciated! I've also been following Ally D Minimally, since she started. I feel like she's my (much younger😝) sister or daughter. Thank you, Joy. God bless!❤

I'm down to 100 pounds and have no energy. I feel like getting up because of your advice. Please keep me in your prayers as God brings me through this.

SO relate... I appreciate your tenderness and honesty on this subject. I am on year 2 of doing this. It’s been more so out of necessity, but it has also helped me stop and appreciate what I have. I have had this one pair of old navy jeans for 3 years that is doomed to rip in the crotch any day and every time O wear them, I am reminded of all the memories and the way God provided that one pair of jeans.

I’m struggling so much with this right now. My daughter is getting married and I am obsessed with what I should wear. I know this is wrong and it won’t matter what I pick. It comes from within. And you are right! A lot of time and a lot of heart.

Thanks for sharing so honestly and openly about the way you have thought about clothes and how that is changing. I know that at one point, I would buy things more out of impulse. Now I have slowly learned to be more thoughtful about what I bring into my house- clothes & other things. I'm currently in Africa, but I'll be spending a year in the US starting this summer. The challenge is to not go overboard with the availability of shopping and the need to replace some things. I'm hoping to find a few clothes that I love and will hold up under frequent wearing and washing.

Dear Joy, you speak out of my heart. This world is crazy! Always more and more and more.... BUT, on the other hand: If you have a special event or occasion, then it is even more exciting, when you go in a shop and buy something, you really, really, REALLY like. That moment is so great and I feel even more thankful. Because it is a special moment, I do it not often. So, I agree totally with you! 👍 Greetings from cold Switzerland

I just love how candidly you talked about this topic, Joy. ❤️❤️Love hearing your heart. So relatable. Don’t take this the wrong way and this is an ignorant comment but I guess I would imagine if one lived in a 3rd world country they wouldn’t care as much about clothes etc.? What’s is the culture like that there in terms of image and consumerism? Again I know that is a sweeping judgement but I’d love to hear your thoughts. I love your new philosophy!

Hi Joy, thanks for sharing your heart on this subject. I can so relate to everything you discussed! I've followed along on your journey since your days in Indonesia, like over 10 years ago, back before social media when you only had your blog. Your walk has been an inspiration to me over the years! I've often thought about how cool it could be to just have a few things to wear over and over, how simple and freeing, yet I struggle with worrying about what people would think about me!? And that's just pride rearing it's ugly head! Anyway, you've definitely given me some thoughts to ponder! I pray that the Lord will continue to guide you on your journey as you inspire others to increasingly Christ-like living, pointing others to Him through your videos!

In the past, I’ve had the opposite problem of not taking time or thought on myself. I’ve always been a natural minimalist with my wardrobe, wearing what fit and I didn’t hate from the thrift store. Now I give myself grace to explore my style a bit. I do however struggle with using too much brain space on finding the perfect homeschool thing. That new, shiny, fix all my problems thing without breaking the budget. Since recognizing this, I’m learning to be okay with sticking with something that works, use Pinterest less, and find joy in what our learning journey looks like.

Thank you for this video, Joy! I could relate to every thing you said. I have been convicted in the last few days that I am giving way too much "head space & heart space" to my clothing. And also using clothing as way of defining me, which is never satisfying. I feel inspired & encouraged after watching this; thanks again.

This is such a heartfelt video! ❤️ Thank you for sharing how God has been growing you! I’ve been doing a no spend year this year as well as a 10 item wardrobe (thank you for the inspiration) and have felt very similar while in the midst of it. I feel like I can breathe and not have to worry, and what a gift that is! Thanking the Lord for you today, Joy! Thank you for being a blessing & never ceasing to grow where God is calling you to!

Hey Joy, I appreciate your perspective. When you said you love hand washing and hanging your clothes to dry that made me smile. I love making my own clothes and even that can become out of control. I'm excited to see how things go for you, and I'm going to be more thoughtful when it comes to my wardrobe. I know it's a little cliche, but consider the lillies :-)

I loved this so much! I’ve recently replaced my wardrobe to less tight fitting pieces and feel more beautiful than before when I thought that fitted clothes were the only thing that looked good on me . Simplicity has literally been so freeing and I feel more beautiful NOT trying . I also need less clothes this way and I’m more at ease and friendly . It’s quite interesting!

I’m in awe of your honesty Joy. I have many similar thoughts and feelings and have always known I spend too much on clothes (although I do love them) but it’s the time and emotional space taken up that I’m starting to really think differently about. I agree with you. I love your term ‘heart space’. 💕✨🙏

Joy this is so so relatable to me. I definitely have had issues with the need for the perfect wardrobe the perfect home the perfect etc etc etc.... It definitely has become an idol at times for me. When I get this perfect skirt that goes with everything my wardrobe will be complete and I can stop thinking about it. Ha!

Oh my goodness. God is good. He allowed me to see this video just when I was ready to see the truth of it in my own life. I'm going through a book, Gospel Treason by Brad Bigney (highly recommend) with a small group of ladies in my church. The whole book is about identifying the idols in our lives. I have realized admiration from others and consumerism (specifically with books and clothes) are a few big idols. I will be joining you on this no spend year. Thank you for sharing your heart.

Hi, Joy! I don't know if you remember me from the blog world some years ago. My blog was called Authentic Beauty, and I did a guest post for your blog, SAHMissonary on creating a personalized look book. I was also a missionary to Guam at the time. I loved learning about your missionary journey and connecting on those grounds. It's funny because you had come to mind recently and I thought I might look you up. Before getting the chance, this video came up as a recommended video on my KZbin feed! What a... coincidence? Glad to see you're still inspiring ladies on the web! So great to "see you" again! ❤️

I can relate to this is in many ways, Joy! Though for me, as a missionary, it was cosmetics! Ha! Sometimes people think that when you are a missionary, you almost have no right to care or think about... Well, many things, but material things especially. But missionary or not, it can still be a struggle! 🙈 On another note, I'm sure your husband appreciates your efforts in looking nice. 😉 Your thoughts and goals are inspiring, Joy! Thanks for sharing from your heart. ♥

I always ALWAYS love your videos... your honesty and kindness are so refreshing! I love the journey that God has you on and that you are being obedient to Him in this. I have felt that living more minimally and simply is something that God is gently nudging me toward, too. I am working on scaling my wardrobe back to 33 items through Courtney Carver's 333 Project but at some point I would love to see if I can live within a 10 item wardrobe. Thank you for being real with us and taking the time to encourage other women! You are a blessing!

I love your videos. I think you're the only person I've heard talk about this topic. I wonder how you feel about going too far in the other direction - after all, Proverbs discusses bringing things from afar so everyone in your household is well dressed. Also, does your husband object to not spending money on yourself? Mine would.

At a recent bible study the speaker said close your eyes and what words would you use to describe yourself.? My first thought was, “not enough.” Then she said now ask God how He would describe you. First thought was, “more than.” Then Proverbs 31 this week had a devotional on Jesus saying, “ don’t you know you are worth more than sparrows.” The writer went on to list more than your clothes, more than your job, more than your education etc. Affirmation God spoke to me. Do you watch The Daily Connoisseur? I think you would enjoy her. Just looked at another video and you list her.

You are beautiful Joy. The most beautiful dress in the world...could not make a more beautiful you. The beauty of God is shining all around you in all you say and do. Couldn't we all be better stewards of what we have been given and be content with less? I hear what you are saying. I hope you will find that peaceful place that the Lord has laid upon your heart...but I really think He's OK with a new pair of jammies now and again😉 God bless you as you inspire us to be all that HE would have us be. 💕
