@@ashleysadventures Don past away a few years ago. He was originally from New York and came to Australia in the 60s, where he compared a tonight show. He was like Australia's Johnny Carson. Back in the 50s he appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show as a stand up comic.

I was 14 years old at the time and I didn't go to school that day so I could watch this very special episode of the Don Lane Show aired during the day live via satellite. Being an Elvis fan I just couldn't wait to see it, and loved the episode. The Don Lane Show was one of the best programs on tv at the time. This video popped up on your channel. I toured Graceland in November 1982. It had only been open for 3 months. I have several good stories about the tour. I also took 36 slides with my Nikon, which I still have. I had no escort on the tour because it was not yet organized very well. I pretty much strolled around the house downstairs freely. It was an experience that is totally unheard of now. I like the nail still in the wall. Keen eye indeed 👍

Thanks Ashley. This is very interesting as I watched this live in Australia as it happened in 1982 as 16 year old. Don Lane took over our version of the tonight show in the lates 70s after the Australian TV King Graham Kennedy was put off the air for doing the crow call on national television. The crow call sounded closely like a particular swear word. I believe this was the first show of its kind to that time beamed back to Australia. Great to see your reaction to it. A historical episode of that show...

I loved this video Ashley!! I recently watched this old segment on KZbin as well. It’s definitely circulating. What a treasure to get to see Graceland so close to when Elvis was alive. The green-carpeted, narrow staircase behind the jungle room and next to the brown chair Vernon sat in…where exactly does it lead to? In 5:14…the staircase to the left. Sorry for the dumb question. 🤓

In the spring of 79 they allow people to visit the gravesite for no charge. His father was in the house and having lunch. I got to tour the house in August 2021. It was a home first time visiting and a tourist attraction 42 years later.

The Cost and Technical aspects of this broadcast in the day are mind blowing. To get from Memphis to GTV-9 Melbourne on satellite it would of taken 2 satellite trips Looking at the Dish vision in the show it seems it was uplinked on a domestic satellite then would of been downlinked in west coast probably LA and then uplinked to an intelsat satellite to be received in Melbourne This would of been complex due to the US using NTSC tv system and Australia using PAL, you can really notice this with the slip screen wheel segment.

I love your approach to all things Elvis, especially the Secret Gracelands that you do. I have a quick question concerning The Don Lane show. I found the recording on KZbin as you suggested and watched it. When Don was getting all handy w/Billy in the pool room (yikes 😲)... I tried to find the rip on the far right corner of the pool table felt and I could not see it. I rewound and watched it a number of times. It could be that the quality of the video was just not good enough to see it, but I wanted to get your thoughts on that. The felt in that right corner seemed in tact, especially compared to the gap we see there today. Getting caught up w/ your channel is like finishing a good book... The chair during this is Elvis the leather chair is different to the one Vernon sat in .. also is there still a clock in the kitchen, I watched a behind the gates of Graceland episode where they show the clock in the jungle room saying there weren't many if any clocks in the house .. they also show the pull out burners in the oven that now has perspex over it

Random question : have the actors from “this is Elvis” ever been interviewed ? I’d love to hear their experience , especially from the actress that was in Elvis bed in the beginning . Also something I always wondered : when Vernon moved back in , did he live upstairs ?

There were two things that Don Lane said were wrong in his 1982 show. First, he said that Elvis never used the pool (he stated it in the beginning when they showed the pool briefly). Second, Don stated that Elvis named Graceland after his mother - Grace. Those were cringe-worthy moments.
