Thank you for the detailed explanations. This presentation begins to uncover the richness of expression that's possible in Standard Chinese.

I'm currently watching it! I like it so much haha Btw did you watch it only in Chinese subtitles or is there a website having English subtitles for this show?

Posted this as a reply somewhere else, but it might be useful for others, as well. Relates to the use of "嘛“ when stating the obvious: If you think about it, 嘛 is serving almost the SAME purpose as the question 嗎. Think about how in English, if you said "So, I'm a freshmen in college, right? Of course I want to go out and party!" The "right?" in the above sentence is basically what 嘛 means --- you are posing a question, but it's a rhetorical one and one who answer is so obvious it doesn't need to be answered. So, although direct translations are often wrongheaded, I think it's safe to translate 嘛 in this situation as the English "You know, right?" It helps get your head around the concept.

I saw 嘛 so many times in 二分之一強 , that’s how I learned it 😂 It’s pretty confusing when listening because it can sound like a question but it’s the opposite! All depends on context I guess.

Well, if you think about it, it actually is serving almost the SAME purpose as the question 嗎. So, although direct translations are often wrongheaded, I think it's safe to translate 嘛 as the English "You know, right?" Hope this is clear! Basically, even though it's written differently, it's really the same function, just a slightly different flavor.

@@peters8699 I noticed that too but only when I translated it to my native language. I couldn't fully differentiate them in english.

I think 嘛 is usually pronounced with a low falling tone while 嗎 has a pretty flat tone.

I have a request here - for some reason I can’t understand some of the phrases for Taiwanese Siri but can understand the Mainland China Siri - if it’s ok can you go through some more phrases that are different between mainland and Taiwanese mandarin?

4:03 I think the explanation is not complete here. I think other people should know that 了 is mostly added because something changed in a sentence (a verb completed or maybe it started raining) and instead of using 了it is more casual to say 啦. Something else to point out as someone who lives in China: 啦 can be used by males and females but males in China tend to use 啦 much less than women. Women use it a lot here in comparison to men. Often, men still use 了
