I joined about a month ago and paid for the Combative course a few weeks prior. I have now my Gi. I’m training with three other guys. They are all younger in their 20’s - one a former Marine - all in Law enforcement now. I’m 57 years old. I have done weight training 6-7 days a week. I Love the Gracie University Combative course. We train 1-2 times a week 2-4 hours per class. The training is broken up into slices that help you retain. The others are 1-2 years advanced from me but the beauty of this course - I can learn alongside without hindering them. Thank you - this was a life long ambition - just took me a while to raise a family.

This is a great video. I appreciated the visual for exhausting your opponent while effectively maintaining energy. Winning is all about not losing and staying safe. We need more people in the world with this approach to conflict and life in general.

Hello Rener and Ryron! Greetings from Nova Scotia. How is it going?? Just saying your videos got me into jiu jitsu and I love it. I've only been I'm it for 2 months though and where I'm at we always start on the ground of course! Anyways so I was wondering if you'd guys would like to do a video on how to close the distance and on all the different techniques on closing the distance and then from different clinches how to bring the fight to the ground with takedown! And also different takedown and when to use them. I think that be a pretty sweet video, maybe because I feel like thats my area of weakness... anyways thanks I hope you guys see this!

Hi, i've been trainning Jiu Jitsu over a year now here in Rio de Janeiro and when i started i was very pacient and calm during the fight, but since i started improving a little bit the instructor kept pushing me to wory about points and not giving up positions. This kind of presure is slowly taking away the fun and burning up my pacience. Do you have any sugestion how i can work around this problem and keep a calm mind set even though someone is screaming from across the room how many points i'm giving up? Thanks a lot.

Great video, but, with all the respect.. I do Okinawan Karate what you explain on the video about "traditional striking systems is about trading blows until one gets the strongest one" is not what its been taught at my school.. we actually train footwork to avoid been hit and counter strike or do a throwing, sweeping technique. What u describe is more a sport-style martial art or Boxing or kyokushin karate..but that way is not the way its taught in all dojos. Other than that, great and keep up your good work :)

I dont think he meant any disrespect, I think he meant that it's more effective to go to the ground and not get hit. But it did sound weird. Those martial arts is not just about taking blows
@Brocklebury

Maybe a bar brawl goes that way, but obviously no striking art is like that. It's called a strawman argument - misrepresent your opponent's position and then attack that false representation.

Sir. You need to make a regulation for BJJ schools. I live in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and I went to a Bjj school whose philosophy was "survive at all costs". It seems like a fight club. All is theached the hard way, even if you are a begginer. In 8 sessions I have been butthead, taked down without knowing how to break a fall, brutal demonstrations of rear nacked chokes, knees to the nose (accidental by the teacher). I mean. Getting a black belt in that kind of environment only promotes being a thug. You have to chech over the schools. I didn't learnt any kind of self defense but the knowledge to win a tournament.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (not Gracie Jiu Jitsu, there's a difference) andgot injured intentionally by a purple belt when I was only a white belt. I started to get good and get the guy on the defensive and so he felt it necessary to plant his knee intp my chest as hard as he could pulling my shoulder and pant leg towards him as if I was a bow and his knee the arrow. Two months later of a broken rib and internal bruising I won't ever do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu again. Because it breeds bullies like this and higher the belt the more pride they have. I hope to find a Gracie Jiu Jitsu academy one day but sadly my city is over taken by MMA and BJJ gyms for tough guys.

I hear you bro. At a boxing gym this guy wanted to soft spar (i was only 2 months in while he was more advanced) and he seemed pretty friendly too. Out of nowhere he blasts me in the ribs and that was it. Could laugh or sneeze without terrible pain for 2 months and coudlnt excercise again until another 2 months. Why did he do that? Ego. Wanted to see how bad he could hurt someone. Like a little kid with a new toy. We just really got to be careful, too many scumbags out there man...

I dont know how fights in your region goes on, but here they knock people out pretty fast or they stop fighting, not because they are exhausted, but because they get hit pretty hard. Its not about exhausting the enemy, its about beating them effectively and fast. Im training BJJ myself and i never used it in street fights, because i knocked people down before or lowkicked the shit out of them. Muay Thai is way better in these situations, BUT if the fight WOULD go down to the ground, youre right. Making them exhaust themself is way more effective. No offense, just wanted to make things clear. Its not about the Jiu Jitsu thats so effective, its about YOU being effective with the "weapons" (knowledge from martial arts) you have.

CommanderDodo Did you stop watching the video when he started to talk about not destroying someone with kicks and punches ? Not every fight is a life or death situation.
@buxadonoff
@buxadonoff 9 жыл бұрын
CommanderDodo Lets not bullshit here, the most effective way to fight is be well rounded in every aspect of the fight, not only on striking and not only on the ground. You need to know how to strike and you need to know how to grapple. You don't always go to the ground because you want to, you might be taken to the ground, and knowing how to defend yourself in there or knowing how to get away from there, is necessary. And you need to know how to strike because grappling might not be the best way to go.
@JohnnyHandsomeCapital
@JohnnyHandsomeCapital 9 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, but as i mentioned in my first post, i talked about fights in my region and only the one i heard of, saw myself or got into, so we shouldnt argue about generell effectiveness in fights, because thats just logical. I just talked about myself, my opinion and experiences and thats why i mentioned the fact that i dont know how fights in their region are going on. Its not a discussion about generell effectiveness, but about me giving my point. Youre absolutely right about what you said and i didnt ment to argue about grappling or striking/kicking being better. Just said that here people arent much into grappling, but more into striking, so if you try to grapple one they might bite you, poke your eye or rip your ear, so nobody really try to grapple those crazy mofos, but knock them out. Thats it.

I hate that....the video clip shown of the larger white man beating the smaller black man from mount is used out of context and makes that person look like a bully?? Watch the whole video, I've seen it many times. The smaller guy is the verbal aggressor, closes the distance and swings First of the larger man. With no skills except his mouth, things quickly go south for him! Please be more responsible in the use of such videos in the future. Thank you!

I love martial arts, nothing but respect for bjj, judo, wrestling ect they all have their place, but you come across as such a slimy snake oil selling weasle when you talk about anything other then bjj. I get it, its the family honor and your a gracie and you need to sell your product, but dont put down every single striking art by lazily saying there just about standing IN FRONT of someone and banging. Just throw punches until bodies drop. Your talking about untrained people fighting. Your talking about bar fights with drunk men or little punk kids at school. Tell that to a pro boxer or black belt in goju ryu karate. The true art and way of any type of striking is to HIT WITHOUT GETTING HIT. That means stratégic use of angles, footwork, changing levels, using setups fakes feints, being deceptive, elusive, non-telegraphing your shots, timing speed précision ect. And being able to mix all that together while being calm yet in the moment ready for war. So as much as i admire the family name and your art, be more knowledable in the subjects you bring up instead of just labeling things useless and ineffictive bc bjj trumps all and is all you need in life. I wish i was living in the matrix so that way i could plug in every martial art in my head. But life is short and anything that matters takes time, effort, and dedication. So thats why its good to atleast train in 2 martial arts. A striking art and ground art. You need both. I have judo and boxing. Get a gracie and make him the next buakaw or sanchai and see. Of course to each his own so if you want to spend your life mastering one art, thats fine too. Again, dont be so close minded and bash the rest. Thank you....can i choke you out now?? Lol jk
