The problem with these self defense moves can be easily solved by doing what BJJ does best-do it against resisting opponents. Then the weaknesses will become apparent. The defense vs stick for instance-the attacker moves in so close he can hit with his hand. Of course one can step in close and hip throw. But have the attacker stay back so that the tip of the stick is hitting the defender, and those defenses go out the window (at least without far more explosive footwork). Against knives, have the attacker piston multiple attacks. Even on the same line. Those defenses of grabbing a fast moving hand with a knife in it will disappear from the curriculum because they’re just not practical.
@tjl46882 жыл бұрын
If the tip of the stick can hit you, then you're not in the right distance for the technique. These are specific techniques for specific scenarios, they're pretty common and still work under resistance.
@tjl46882 жыл бұрын
Additionally, the attacker with the stick is not trying to hit with the hand. The brown belt very clearly steps in, allowing him to smother the strike with his footwork, as you suggested. Look where the blue belt starts from and the length of his arm + stick.

It happened to me. I was robed in South America, Salinas, Ecuador back in 2009. 2 guys. One with a 38mm on my head while the other one was trying to empty my pockets, I was very aware of the situation since they started walking towards me, all the time I was informing them that I knew what they wanted and I was already taking off my watch and wallet. They finally get close and pointed the gun in my head, the adrenaline made me slap the gun away(Very very very stupid move) while I was telling them that I was already giving them everything and the guy almost drop it and try to hit me with the gun on my head, finally they left. I was not scared while everything was happening surprisedly, right after I felt I was safe I started shaking. More context, I used to go play Poker every Thursday night at friend's house( Imagine a closed compound with a big gate outside and my friend's house was located 100 yards away from the gate ) Only 2 structures like this in the block. One light post in front of the gate and usually around the same time everyone that came to play gathered outside while waiting for my friend to open the gate, we used to send a text to him while we were in the car so he could start coming to the gate, that night he did not heard his phone. I arrived in a taxi and another taxi a minute after stopped close to the gate, I thought the guys coming out of the taxi were friendlies until I saw one of them coming out with a backpack and one hand inside like holding something and the other one asking me what time it was, I said I know what you guys want and the rest of what happened you already read it. This was not a movie, even when I think I started doing what I thought it was smart, comply and always communicating with them to let them know I was complying I did that stupid move of slapping the gun with my hand to the side, this could've ended in them shooting me since I did not get control of the gun.

I believe it’s more exclusive to the Helio / self-defense lineage : Gracie Academy, Royce, Valente Bros, Sauer, Rickson / Kama, etc. Not saying others don’t test this way...I’m not sure, but I recognize a lot of these techniques from the Gracie University curriculum and I have a friend that got his black belt from Royce and he had to fly down to the Valente Bros in Miami and do what sounded like a similar test

is this better than training Brazilian jiu-jitsu?
@Omgiamsotriggered8 жыл бұрын
Hi there! To answer your question This is brazilian jiu jitsu, its just that Gracie family are the ones who invented the art from judo and japanese jujutsu, therefore their schools are being considered as the top of the notch, and their specific teaching is commonly called Gracie Jiu Jitsu in order to separate them from the others since they are the main family. I've never been to a gracie school so I cant really tell,but from what I've heard they are really pricey. Still, its a safe bet because you are sure and certain you will get top for your money. But by my opinion just find a good school with a great teacher and you should be fine. BJJ is a lot fun and its a style of life. It builds you up physically and mentally in a way that cant be described, but thats off the topic. Sorry for the long post and grammar mistakes. Hope that clears it up sir. :D
@james5757308 жыл бұрын
krellay I am under the impression that the main difference is gjj is more or only self defense and bjj is sport with little or no attention to self defense
@Omgiamsotriggered8 жыл бұрын
Basically, there are a LOT of members of Gracie family, some of their schools are more based on self defense where others are in sport, it all depends where you sign up and what you are looking for. Its just that the Gracie name is top of the pyramid when it comes to Jiu Jitsu since they invented it, and that's the main difference that separates them from the others (you are guaranteed quality for your money).
@james5757308 жыл бұрын
krellay thanks for your input
@nmercado17598 жыл бұрын
Absolutely no difference between BJJ and GJJ. GJJ is just a trademark for BJJ. Like Krellay said, some schools focus on sport, others focus on self-defense. However I disagree with "guaranteed quality for your money", GJJ is looking to take your money. I train at a school whose lineage does not stem from a Gracie... my schools lineage stems from Takeo Iano and Sa, my gym is more focused on training not taking your money.... also everyone at my gym is a straight up murderer, especially the mma team. :)

I think people (the attacker) would just end up getting hurt unnecessarily. The one on one roll with your superior will tell all. There is no hiding in jiu jitsu. A tap is final. Which is what makes bjj special. Btw congratulations on this amazing well deserved achievement. Any jujudoka practitioner will tell you it is a long hard fought journey. This achievement is not to be taken lightly. Oss.
@maxrr5558 жыл бұрын
kimura kano i didny mean the rolling, i meant the "self defence" part. the attacker is just lightly swingin theie arms. in a real situation they wont, and then the guy defending wont be able to do thos things, if he has never trained full force..
@oraclebjj8 жыл бұрын
+mauno hietala i cant really speak to the self defence portion. I can imagine should you come from a Krav Maga type art, the level of self defence is amped. Personally i dont see bjj for hand to hand standup defence but Gracie jiu jitsu started on the streets hence that portion continues.
@Seegie168 жыл бұрын
This is because stand up self defense is pretty unpractical, There are situations where the stand up attacker could get caught of guar but in a real situation with a big strong guy it will just end on the ground. Those standup moves are for show. I will say they are more practical than some other japanese jj and aikido type arts. But still are hard as hell to pull off on a live training. The bear hug and headlock escapes are legit as hell though.

i don't understand why people force self defence into bjj. I trained krav maga for 2 years and i am a 3 stripe blue belt in bjj so these guys have more martial arts experience than me, but i am sure as hell that there is absolutely no way for you to defend against a knife attack with grappling only if it is not in some special condition. even krav maga which is based solely on self defence has a hard time with unpredictable knife attacks, let alone a bjj practitioner, i think it gives peopel a false idea that they stand a chance and it can be desasterous. just tell people look if someone attacks you with a knife, just fucking run, you are gonna get stabbed and killed. of course it's different for police officers and army personel but they have guns and other equipment to deal with these kinds of attacks. of course better to have some training than no training but it think that people get false hope of security. let bjj be grappling sport, don't try to turn it into something that it isn't

As for sport BJJ - It has its merits. However, not sure a trained response to pull guard is much to brag about.
@cp96627 жыл бұрын
Do you guys even know what you are talking about? Self defense is forced into bjj because bjj is a self defense martial art. It's only been in the last 15 years or so that the sport side of it has blown up to where it is at today. That is why you see a lot more sport oriented bjj gyms opened up nowadays. When the art was originally created it was created for self defense so of course self dense is "forced" into it if you train at a traditional academy. Also just so you know, just because you train in traditional bjj doesn't mean you don't succeed in tournaments. As a matter of fact it is quite the opposite, most of the top 20 bjj practitioners in the world train in traditional gracie bjj (self defense bjj as you would see it).
