When I was attacked by a man I did not allow him to know my strength. I knew he would overcome me at my strongest point, so I became quite limp, this reduced the pressure he placed on my arms with his grip so they did not hurt as much. He became concentrated on his next move and at that point I struck and wriggled my arms free, pulled hair and punched as hard as I could. I started yelling and he kicked me very hard in the shin and I nearly collapsed and he thought he had me but at that point I smashed him very hard in the nose. I was lucky because at this point some men arrived and helped me. I don't like fighting at all, I am not a fighter but I was not going to allow him to do what he wanted. These techniques are useful to know, also that you can fight people stronger if you keep calm and if you believe in yourself.

I was willing to give out a shot because of the Gracie name. I showed this video to my 14 year old daughter then had her try it against me. I am 6’4” and about 250 pounds. Yeah whats also horrible is that its hard even if if they arent strong (yes there are instances where ppl weaker than you assault you yet its hard to do stuff abt it) but they are your close aquaintainces/friends which causes ppl to be shocked and freeze since it was unexpected and hesitate because its easier to hit a random creep than a loved one/friend thats a creep (thats why interpersonal relationship violence is so scary). Or pulling this in public in front of aquaintainces in a way thats not visible to them but known to victim only subtly because even tho its said to scream etc most ppl are too embarassed to say a thing till it escalates especially if ppl surrounding you/your society seems like/is full of victim blamers/shamers than helpful and its not even a matter of strength any more, which is why even men are vulnerable to sexual assaults. And thats why its not a physical/sexual violation alone but also a violation of trust, psychological + verbal,reputational and emotional violation and makes it hard to trust any one that touches you and sometimes even talks to you. And may be one of the rare ways to recover that trust is to meet as many good people as we can and find healthier relationships even if our trust might have been broken by people we trusted. But also learn psychological+verbal+textual+emotional+ physical defense (not just one), understand your own and criminals psychology and use the information and awareness to your advantage. And there are myriads of resources online to learn from. And if all else including online self help fails you can always ask for help from a therapist. And believe you will get through this, not right away but as you learn, change psychologically/physically and in time emotional wounds may reduce.

Right, it’s also about muscle memory. If you only do it once or twice it’s not going to work, you have to practice a lot so it’s like second nature to you, so that it becomes a reflex because in a stressful situation you probably won’t remember to do this. I mean most people would just scream and flail around. If you’re panicking you can’t pull it off so you have to stay calm. I was raised in a martial arts oriented family with 2 brothers who had 2nd and 3rd degree black belts. Besides their coaching, I belonged to a dojo and trained in martial arts for 4 years before having to stop when I became pregnant with my first child. I lived and breathed karate my entire life, and won many awards & trophies in both sparring and Kata, at tournaments (besides getting my butt kicked on a regular basis by my brothers. Lol). Fast forward 10 years and I was unfortunately married to what turned out to be a very abusive man. He exploded one day, locked me in a bedroom and sucker-punched me across the face. I tried to fight back, but NONE of the martial arts techniques I was taught over the years worked. None of them. He had me on the floor in the position described in this video. I couldn't move or try the technique suggested, simply because he had his weight shifted back and was basically "sitting" down on my hips. I was powerless. When someone is a lot stronger than you are, and they surprise you with the first hit (which can be really disorienting and painful), sometimes all that training just doesn't work. At least it didn't for me. It's been years since I left him (I had to pack up and leave in one day while he was out of town for business). I took basically the clothes on my back my dog. I'm still afraid to be in another relationship.

If you can't free yourself in under six seconds then you really need to look at a different move to suite you and physical capabilities.....

Exactly. There is no such thing in martial arts as a move that works the first time for 100% of people. A technique is like a "hypothesis". The sparring and pressure testing against a variety of skill levels and body types is like the "experiment".

Putting up a fight, getting in any “dirty” moves that really hurt, screaming, and falling back on simple but effective reflexive positions to protect your neck, head, and vital organs can all tilt the odds in favor of surviving/stopping the assault. It’s similar to wearing a seatbelt AND having air bags, AND having a car with a crumple zone. The more layers if protection you have, the better.

Exactly. I’ve used this method and while he didn’t necessarily fly off of me to where I could grab ahold of him and move positions like in the video (consider also the presence of physical obstacles, like furniture, when needing to use these techniques) but it got one of my hands free, a leg free to kick at him with, and I was able to gouge his eye with my thumb. Eye gouges aren’t always realistic, but in this case it was my last chance and I was so glad I took it. You have to try. There is no other option but to try.

Back then, multiple attackers were covered in our sessions as well. At the time it was rolled into stick fighting and Jeet Kune Do, to create a full spectrum system (at least where I was in Cali). Eg. Ppl regardless of gender get manipulated online to meet in person to be physically/sexually assaulted offline and so on,people also groom kids/manipulate adults/have verbal fights before it ever reaches physical level.... Thats where verbal/textual/psychological defense comes in handy, it can help reduce the possibility of an offline confrontation. plus tonnes of different crimes from being kidnapped for organ trafficking (tho idk how you defend yourself from being sedated and ppl that are organ harvested would be), being just kidnapped/human trafficked for slavery/forced labour and bunch of other stuff exists and in different scenarios different kinds of defense techniques d work, from having information to having resources ready and so on..knowledge of how everything works d help too. (like SA ratio for men and intersex ppl might be less than women but lot of ppl only focus on the larger ratio when its needed for ppl regardless of gender and crime but it happens to all three), just that mens/IS sexual assault reports may be underreported and underrepresented more than women because in some countries there isnt even a law against it for sexually harassing men and boys which is just sad. And self defense in every other way is needed in daily life and at different intensities and for everyone.. Just like sometimes its easier to punch a random creep than to punch your boss for workplace bullying/punching loved ones for SA.or swatting an acquaintances light touch so you dont seem rude but you arent sure of their intention where punching doesnt always work but SA starts from them trying to desensitize you to their touch (where verbal tactics may come in handy). Excuse me for diversifying the main physical defense to different kinds of defenses for different ppl tho i thought its kinda necessary.

ramon 19, She is in no pain right now. Assuming a rapist would put you in no pain is idiocy, suppose he started twisting her wrists almost to the breaking point would she still be able to get out? Before you say yes you must acknowledge that pain can easily send the person in pain into a state of panic. When you start to panic you stop thinking. In this situation during a state of panic the brain would most likely resort to trying to free the arms. The only way that this would truly work is if they were trained is some form of combat which most people are not. I believe you would be better off biting the shit out of his arm. He can’t use both of his hands to pin your wrists and immobilize your head at the same time. Wrestling with brother 9 years older than me as a child [if pinned on this position I got the spit dribble and retract treatment] so I developed a very effective counter. Bring your leg up and kick them in the back of the head repeatedly. Just the side on your foot can still be effective if you're wearing footwear, or you just keep hammering again and again. And if you're really flexible, you can get the side of the face or loop your foot around so you can get it in front of their neck or face and start levering. And if they're down to low on your body to reach your leg up, just keep kneeing their ass, and you might get lucky and be able to get your leg between theirs and either lever them off or go for the crotch. Being 7 vs a 16 year old, I was a lot smaller, you can bring your legs into play and just use their power while their hands are effectively neutralized since they are committed to pinning you. BTW I'm now bigger than my brother 😉.

i did a self defense class back when i was in shape. they taught all sorts of breaks and stuff. they paired me off with someone close to my size and did so with everyone else. then a pair of girls next to us asked me to try and pin them. because i was by far the biggest person there. i put them in a hold and they break out. they then asked me to do full force. it did not work out at all. even the instructor couldn't break out using the techniques. so if in trouble and the technique doesn't work try not to panic and try to find a fleshy bit you can jam a finger, a foot into to cause them to loosen their grip a little and go from there. and if you break free, hit a joint or soft spot then leg it.. hit and git. dont look back dont slow down till you are in safety.

My older sister Jenelle taught me this move and I had to use this once. In high school and college I was a cheer leader. It was my sophomore year of high school and after the one home football game we went back to the locker room and I put a sweatshirt on over my uniform top. I was the last one out so I come out of the locker room to meet up with the rest of the girls. All of a sudden I get grabbed by my pony tail and I get put against the wall. I realize it’s a boy so I try to leave but he pulls me back. I yell at him to get off of me and I slap him. He then immediately slaps me in the face. At the same time he grabs my leg I’m thinking he’s about to put his hand up my skirt. He pulls my leg out from under me and puts me on the ground and he then mounts me. I’m screaming at him he then slaps me again and pins my arms like this and says I see you’re a feisty one. He then says that feistiness is going to get you killed bitch. I all of a sudden remembered what my sister had taught me. So I used this move and it worked. As I rolled him over I gave him a quick punch to the face and I grabbed my equipment bag and ran. I could hear people yelling Kristen I knew my girls were looking for me I ended up running into the rest of the girls which they were coming back to try to find me. Then all of a sudden heard someone yell you’re in trouble now bitch he came looking for me but when he saw that I had my girls backing me up and Jamie our squad captain said to him if you take one more step towards her meaning me that she as bd the rest of the girls would hurt him he needed to get away and he ran away.

I've tried it with my husband who is 40kg heavier than me and it didn't work. You might be able to push the attacker with your pelvis, but arms still wouldn't go. So as a personal advice from a relatively small female I would recommend everyone to prevent the attack on it's first stages by running away or using self defense spray. If it's really bad and you end up under the attacker, try to analyze the situation and size of the person on you, you might be too weak to make any difference but steam up the attacker... God bless you all, be safe 🙏❤

As someone who trains in multiple martial arts and has 3 black belts, LEARN AS MUCH AS YOU CAN. Learn striking, learn grappling, learn how to completely avoid confrontation. I help teach a self defense class where we train striking, throws, and grappling. I will always tell people I'm teaching that you will never know what to expect. Maybe everything goes out the window in that moment or maybe you only remember the basics, but you are much better off consistently training and having a chance than nothing at all. There are so many different ways to use your body for self defense. There is no "one true way" or an "ultimate defense' so, again, learn multiple things and consistently train them.

I see a flaw in the start of this. The guy locking his arms straight out then supporting himself on her arms at that 80° angle. The escape relies on changing that angle and tipping him over so his body is no longer parallel to the ground. (2:08) If he is quick enough to react he would bend his elbows a bit and bear down more weight to stay in place (like a pushup).

ladies - men or others - don't be misled. your defense begins with not being taken to the ground. you MUST CONSIDER - this man has concern for this woman taking her down gently - preventing injury. someone on the street attempting to take you down has NO CONCERN for what happens to you or your injuries. i will not say how many ways this defense is insufficient for your protection. your counter attack plan and methods should begin while you are on your feet. your defense begins with your awareness of your surroundings, anticipation of hostility, evasion of overwhelming conditions and mounting an overpowering defense sufficient to discourage further attack before you are on your back with someone on top of you. your opponent must realize the potential for injury or death outweighs any reward they may attain from further attack. this will not only cause them to flee - but to not return for risk of not escaping.

This is fine on a solid surface free of obstructions, such as walls and furniture. An attack like this is most likely to happen on a soft surface such as a mattress or in a confined space. Trying it on a mattress would drastically decrease the effectiveness of the hip thrust and therefore prevent the attacker's lunge forward that would facilitate the release of the victim's wrists. Also if near a wall/headboard the attacker would have the ability to brace their head against them. These are factors often excluded in teaching self defense. They should be tried in different scenarios, such as extremely soft surfaces, confined space, or sloped ground. Then they should be modified and tested and if they fail they should be abandoned as self defense and used only for sport.
@AntonBrazhnyk2 жыл бұрын
Yeap. I also pretty sure it won't work on any surface if attackers hips are down, i.e. his sitting on defender. But..., still better than nothing at all.
