I'm not in the army but as a British army cadet who unfortunately has to eat these, I can tell you that what you had was a normal ration pack , just not with all of the things that are normally in it. The menu that you put on screen was more correct, you get three full meals with loads of snacks and drinks, definitely more than what you had. The thing about Tabasco and chewing gum was because there are around 30 different ration packs, all with different meals and snacks, you can buy unopened ration packs on most army supply websites!! I hope that was helpful!
@sueorosz39945 жыл бұрын
My husband was in the army stateside for 34 years and we both ate our share of rations!! They’ve gotten much tastier over the years! I remember 30 years ago when the scrambled eggs were green! Lol! Now the rations have flavor!!!! The u.k. Rations look delicious!!!! :) when you are training in a field for a month with no access to food other than rations, they are a delight! You did a great challenge!!!!

Year ago I was given a box of army tinned chicken supreme. I was in my 20's and lived alone. There were a lot of tins and all were 'technically' out of date. We all have different taste buds and it's useless to listen to comments on various meals unless they really are very bad - or good. I am 72 years old and I have never tasted anything so nice as that chicken supreme. Those dreadfull looking tins held the Food Of The Gods. I have never seen it since and often wonder if it is still part of army rations. I'll have to end, I'm dribbling. Novel video, makes a nice change.

I know im super late to the video but I went to a military college for two years, and my partner is in the Royal Marines. An average Rat Pack is 4000kcal, if you have dietary requirements you do get a choice of menus and the energy drink powder- sometimes you get boiled sweets and USE THE TWO AS A DIP DAB! tastes so much better!! When youre on tour (wars) there is usually some kind of market near by so you never have to just eat these, my teacher used to eat camels...gross! great video though, I really enjoyed it!x

All cultures have animals whom the consider edible (food) and those they consider inedible (disgusting). What you eat is simply a matter of culture; where you were raised and what animals your friends and family eats. It is conditioning as we are taught to treat some animals like family and others with so little regard that they are eaten.

We don't get fresh milk so just imagine the muesli made with hot water into a kind of porridge. Also, those coffee sachets....god send. Usually you do get 2 meals in a ratpack for like lunch and tea so idk why you didn't. The energy drink juice powders are SO good. I love the tropical one. You can also get a cinnamon roll instead of the cherry turnover which is good too. My favourite breakfast is the beans and sausage, sooo much better than the muesli! There are certain packs of biscuits in the ratpacks that will "bung" you up and some that help to...release...haha🙃 can't believe you ate this for fun 😂

A bit off topic, but about porridge, maybe try it with soy milk as I quite like it because it make the porridge quite creamy and smooth. Also I can’t remember if you tried this or not, but find some oats that are like mini? sort of like the ready brek oats but without all the stuff in ready brek. They can make it smoother I find. Also I like to add slightly more milk to my porridge so it’s less gloopy. Maybe this will help you in your quest to like porrridge!

As a US soldier eating MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) was fun at first then it became really boring. Lots of trading going on. Cheese spread w/jalapenos was in high demand. The little bottles of Tabasco did help with the blandness. Some of the items were rank but you ate them just for the calories. We hardly ever ate everything at once and the meals didn't always get "cooked". They're edible cold. Also, the hard candy we usually got (CHARMS) were horrible. TMI: You're bathroom visits become less frequent when eating MREs on the regular AND they start to smell different.

In mine, I got 3 meals (one of them may have been porridge for breakfast though, but often it was a full English or it was beans and sausage). Never got a heat pack, we cooked them in our mess tins just warmed them up in water or just ate them cold. Always got snacks and one desert. Snacks included pb and jam, marmalade, tuna, nuts, jerky, crackers, biscuits and others

@nickyatwell12565 жыл бұрын
Your ration pack was semi correct. The soldiers tend to pick and choose and swap with others, for the things they like the most. The menu is designed to bung you up because if you’re out in the field and you need to poop, you have to do it in a bag and incinerate it! My husband did 22yrs in the Army and would collect as many coffees and sugars as possible, swapping with hot chocolate for those who don’t like coffee or tea. He tended to have the egg, sausage & beans for breakfast as he doesn’t like muesli. Lunch is meant to be oatmeal biscuits with primula type cheese or tuna, sometimes even a soup! Dinner is then a curry or stew or pasta etc. There’s often packs of gum, nuts and boiled sweets to snack on, as well as cereal bars and energy drinks. Hope this gives you a better idea, oh and yes, there’s always a tiny bottle of Tabasco sauce for those that need more spice in their food. There is a halal menu, and a vegetarian one.

My brother is British Army infantry and he used to send us photos of his food out in Afghan. It looked rank, but he always said if you're hungry enough, you'll eat it. Plus, we sent them a lot of care packages so they never went without.
@simonh63715 жыл бұрын
What you wrote at the beginning about British soldiers not having a choice of meals isn't strictly true, in barracks there is a cookhouse serving freshly cooked meals and when I served in the late 80s/early 90s there was always a choice of about 4 or more main courses at both lunch and dinner plus a few dessert options. Breakfast was a full English but like a buffet but the cooks put it on your plate, except for fried eggs for which there was a tray of eggs next to a hotplate and you could fry them how you liked. On exercise we ate ration packs but depending on the type of exercise these varied, there were 1-man 24 hour packs for when you were out living off what you could carry, and even then there were like 5 or 6 different types although you just ate the type you were given. Tinned chicken curry and so-called babies' heads (tinned steak & kidney pudding) were the 2 most popular mains in those packs, apart from mains they were basically the same. Vehicle crews got bigger boxes for a 3 or 5 day period for a number of guys and then you could to some extent create your own meals, plus we got issued some fresh ingredients to supplement, nothing fancy but substantial stuff like potatoes, carrots, onions, tomatoes, bacon, eggs, pork chops/steaks and bread. Also we used to be able to stop off and buy stuff in German supermarkets if time permitted on the way between exercise locations (I was in 2 & 3 man landrover-based signals detachments so we moved between locations every day or 2) and sometimes we even stopped at a McDonalds drive thru or a Schnellie (Schnellimbiss) - a German snackbar serving french fries and sausages etc. So all in all we ate pretty well and substantially whether in camp or on exercise. EDIT: watched a bit more now (I always pause and write comments, not good I know!) and I'm actually pretty shocked too at the lack of hot food, as in our old 24 hr ration packs we had the makings of a cooked breakfast of some kind - usually tinned ''bacon grill' or ''bacon burgers'' which you heated in a mess tin filled with water, and then used the water to make instant porridge aka ''rolled oats'' in a sachet which you could pour water in, to make a brew (tea/coffee) and to wash and shave with. Then it was just cold stuff like biscuits & pate, sweets until the evening unless you got more time or opportunity to make a brew, and a hot meal and dessert and of course a brew (tea or hot chocolate) in the evening.

i had to eat rat packs when i went away with cadets and this is the kind of things we would get: the snacks where the same but they have varieties of flavours breakfasts where muesli, porridge or 'all day breakfast' which was a bag with everything mixed in lunch tended to be a soup or a pasta type bag that was to be eaten warm tea was a rice dish like a curry and rice or something along those lines and a desert like the turnover or a cake but its boil in the back and they are nastyyyyyyyy, we also got a pot of Tabasco, chewing gum and tissues. in terms of allergies they had a box for my allergies to dairy and my friend that was allergic to nut and egg so i assume they have packs made up for different dietary requirements.
