I'm a quantitative researcher who has found himself having to take a course in qualitative research. The level of subjectivity I associate with qualitative research makes it difficult for me to absorb a lot of the principles of qualitative methods but you've done a very good job making it digestible. Thank you.

This is great. I would suggest new PhD students to figure out what research method best fits to their research questions and then read the most cited papers describing those methods (kind of source papers). Finding good quality articles that used those methods could be another way to understand how it works.

My research questions are these: 1. What is the local communities understanding of environmental issues and nature-based solutions in Limerick City? 2. Are there ways to interpret or create more spaces for the local community to become actively involved with environmental issues through nature-based solutions in Limerick City? The objectives outlined below determine specifically what the researcher will examine. These include: • Create a general understanding of the attitudes of the local community towards environmental issues and nature-based solutions. • Identify the impact that environmental issues have had on the local community. • Determine how the local community want to take action to tackle environmental issues and nature-based solutions in the future. • Look at ways to encourage more innovative nature-based solutions within the local community. • Identify ways in which a Nature Interpretation Centre could enhance engagement with the local community. What would be the best qualitative and quantitative data analysis to use?

I've been in the data science/IT industry for over 15 years and this is the first I am encountering a name for the methods which is extremely strange because I have used all of them at some point in my career as a IT professional and can give examples of each related to the work I've done. So crazy that even though you have NO theoretical method, you still are following the same methods without realizing it. Just goes to show that you must keep an open mind in everything in life if you want to find real true meaning to life or situations.

Didn’t realize my liberal arts degree employed LOTS of qualitative research analysis (how many US male politicians who cheat apologize publicly, and public reaction, for example). I can also think of how we studied language as a means of shaping concepts (for example, using words such as “higher” and “lower” classes to create hierarchies of humans in society, the bootstraps myth, etc). Finally, we spoke about mass shooters versus terrorists. Do the words evoke thoughts of specific skin colors, or ethnic or religious identities? We also talked about bias awareness, which was a huge part of my interviews. I did surveys, transcribing, anecdotal interpretation, etc. So cool! All this as part of philosophy, religious studies, and gender studies.

When I read about grounded theory content analysis is often linked with it. Within grounded theory the original authors diverted somewhat and but content analysis is associated with it. So what specifically is the difference between grounded theory ( which I thought was more of an approach) and content analysis?

Some notes I made, it’s better to watch the video for a more in-depth explanation, but here are the key descriptions. 1. Content analysis - Frequency of which an idea is shared, patterns deeper interpretations. Have a specific question before going in, group into categories. - Time consuming, losing important nuances. 2. Narrative Analyzing stories, how something is being said. (students how they talk about their stories on internet.) Limitations with sample sizes, and research bias so be careful when using this method. 3. Thematic Looks at patterns, takes bodies of data according to similarities, themes that constantly pop up in data. Aims in understanding people’s experience, exploratory, research questions change. 4. Discourse Spoken debate, analyzing debate in its social context within the culture and society. 5. Grounded Theory Intention is to create new theory at the data at hand, goes into analysis with an open mind, without any bias. After analyzing the general data, you might find patterns in the data. Then you might look for a smaller data and more commonalities, as the process continues, you will develop a theory. 6. IPA Designed to help you understand the personal experiences of a subject concerning a major life event. Research bias should be taken to account, be VERY self aware or else you might muddy the research.
