+rick bishop Hey, man just compare those two songs. Musically they are very similar. Similar rhythm section, similar melody, similar mood. Only instrumentation and producing makes them quite different but not very much. And check out the lyrics too. What the words of the both songs are talking about? Pretty the same thing. Just Vince is not genius as a lyricist (Ian was), so his lyrics is not so intense and flattering. But not bad at all.

+rick bishop JD had huge impact to the british indie scene 1979 -- 80 and it is fact, not myth. JD was not found posthumously, their both albums had large influence. Both went gold, btw, so they sold enough to be more than favourities of some dozen freaks. . DM is a part of british indie scene for 35 years and they had been influenced by JD much more than by Human League for example.

@mattt5228 Жыл бұрын
@Max Jareš He probably did. I may be wrong, but I feel if he had better medical treatment, his epilepsy wouldn't have weighed so heavily on his mind. I know he made ither poor choices that ate at him til he died. One was he cheated at least once. I don't see his choices as making him a malicious person. His mental health along with his epilepsy caused so many mental health problems, that his depression took control most od the time. Especially with epilepsy it messes with the chemical balances within the brain, already causing anxiety, depression, and sometimes even effects the way a person perceives things. I truly think he would have had a better life with better medical attention. But that is simply speculation as well as my perception while being introspective. I do not have epilepsy but I do have neuro problems that make life for me sometimes extremely difficult. With modern medicine and knowledge we have now, I'm getting treatment I need to help get back on track.

@Max Jareš Yeah, at certain points with neurological problems like epilepsy, certain parts of the disorder truly are gone after a few decades of the issue. To the degree, he probably would have need brain surgery that would have basically his brain onto 2 separate pieces right and left to disconnect the signal issues from causing his seizures. Also, Thank you my friend. To be fair, i wouldn't want you or anybody on this planet to feel what it's like to go through this. It has been a long journey for me, but it has made me into the person I want to be patient, forgiving, balanced, and appreciating the small things. I remember listening to this song fifteen years ago when I was 19. I had this CD and I would listen to it every morning at 7:30am in the winter when it was -30 and still dark, as I was biking to university. I thought my life was collapsing at the time (lol in some ways it was and still is) so this album meant a lot to me. Closer might be even better, but it's also totally past hope (i.e. "The Eternal"). Joy Division were one of a kind.

Colonel Hart this is exactly what I did with NIN.
@colonelhart57217 жыл бұрын
linglingjr I actually got into NIN after Joy Division - the cover of "Dead Souls" was a perfect link - and then I got heavily into NIN. I love most of what Reznor has done but I still think that The Downward Spiral was his masterpiece and the height of his inspiration.
@linglingjr7 жыл бұрын
Colonel Hart that's really funny because I got into joy division after discovering that NIN's "dead souls" was a joy division cover. I thought that Ian's voice was laughable for the first time and then I listened to other songs and it grew on me a ton. Now I'm a massive fan.
@colonelhart57217 жыл бұрын
linglingjr I think one music critic's comment about Joy Division's bassist holds true about them and their influence over these decades and the future: "Anyone can play bass like Pete Hook. After they hear him play." I dare say without JD there would be no NIN, I am a HUGE NIN fan, but there are some things no cover could capture. "Shadowplay" for example or the BBC versions of "Exercise One" or "Twenty Four Hours" - there is nothing else like those songs (though goddamn do I love Trent in general and for acknowledging his influences). As we both have good taste in music (lol), I will now stop bothering you - but I would suggest checking out Mad Season - River of Deceit, if you've never heard that song before. I think as much of Curtis lived on in grunge as in industrial.

Ian was epileptic and the complicated part of this was the fact that, at the time, most medicines to manage epilepsy were very experimental. So, Ian had to deal with the demons of his illness and the artificial demons that these new drugs would engender as he would be fighting all these problems in his head. That is also why he supposedly danced like a whirling Dervish on stage. He would have these epileptic episodes on stage and people thought it was part of the act.
@iio587 жыл бұрын
They still are experimental. When someone has epilepsy it isn't clear which one to give them, its still a game of roulette where you have to try several different ones in different doses to find the balance that works for that person. Having seen my girlfriend nearly die twice from it due to dosages being wrong and having to have the police smash into our house when I was away on business to get to her before she choked to death, its a harrowing method to diagnose but still, it's better now than back then for sure.

Joy Division and post punk are more accurate at expressing depression in my opinion, instead of melodic sad songs because depression isn't feeling sad, it's a cold uncaring apathy like the simple and stripped down sound you get from Joy Division.
@maryburke5423 Жыл бұрын
Those bands were coming from parts of England that was still bombed out since ww2. Looking back from where we are, I think post punk explored a lot of the trauma left by ww2 that wasn’t talked about in Britain. It also embodied the sense of hopelessness that the Cold War had wrought amongst young people. And yes, punk and post punk music often confronted mental health issues that had never been ok to talk about before.

+Pip Piposo It feels like every word in his texts and every sound of the music has lead to the seemingly unavoidable thing that has happened. He has changed the music world nevertheless.

Ðavy This is such an amazing/odd thought. To think of Ian as an old man. Cannot wrap my mind around it. R.I.P Ian Curtis...Forever young...
@panagiotischaralampopoulos71527 жыл бұрын
it would really be a question if we all the old fans of JOY DIVISION would stand to see Ian old and 60 years old. especially all we that we are now 50 years old and have grown in an age similar with IAN CURTIS. We see our selves diminished from the loss of youth and how we are now and where we are going. Life deserves to all but it is really difficult to imagine this legend becoming 60 yeras old. but maybe it was beteer to be alive for his own people and not for the fans. anyway what to say about IAN CURTIS. evrything will be in vain. we talk about the greatest band EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know why but this song brings so much nostalgia
@STOPSYPHER4 жыл бұрын
this is one of the songs that gives me nostalgia for times i haven't experienced or won't again. the moment of clarity in the party where you freeze in time and soak in everything going on around you. The midnight drives through the rain, dimly lit by streetlights. getting lost in the stars with the girl i loved. the feeling of existential loneliness while contemplating life. brings up so many emotions.

Sounds like sheet metal warping in the background. One of the best tunes of all times, can't explain why, but it's just something so good and so original. So sad about this man, his light was extinguished way before his time, had so much to give the music industry.

I've been waiting for a guide to come and take me by the hand Could these sensations make me feel the pleasures of a normal man? Lose sensations, spare the insults, leave them for another day I've got the spirit, lose the feeling Take the shock away It's getting faster, moving faster now It's getting out of hand On the tenth floor, down the back stairs It's a no man's land Lights are flashing, cars are crashing Getting frequent now I've got the spirit, lose the feeling Let it out somehow What means to you, what means to me And we will meet again I'm watching you, I'm watching Oh I'll take no pity from your friends Who is right? Who can tell? And who gives a damn right now? Until the spirit new sensation takes hold Then you know Until the spirit new sensation takes hold Then you know Until the spirit new sensation takes hold Then you know I've got the spirit But lose the feeling I've got the spirit But lose the feeling Feeling, feeling, feeling, feeling, feeling, feeling, feeling

I was born almost EXACTLY 40 years after Ian Curtis... He was born July 15, 1956. I was born July 16, 1996 so I feel as if I can connect with him on a highly spiritual level. I almost hung myself before I even knew who Joy Division was. I was majorly depressed and all that. But anyways, rest easy, Ian. I love you and the rest of the band and what you did, musically. So genius.

Ian actually killed himself on the same day as my birthday, May 19, and apparently one of the last things he did was watch a Werner Herzog movie, whose work I really admire since I would like be a film director myself. I feel very connected to JD, the ending of this song brings tears to my eyes. Too much feeling, too many cold and callous people in the world..

Introduced to them at 17, two year's after Ian's passing. The impact of hearing the Warsaw bootleg and realizing that whatever was on tape was all there would ever be... Still listen frequently and find myself transported to another age. Four young men who may not have fully grasped what they were doing have made music and many lives better.
