I'll give you a deep, deep cut. About a decade ago, there was a coed trio that included an African American male called "The Farm" or maybe "THE FARM" and they had a debut single called Home Sweet Home. To you it probably was too pop-country. But to me, that should've been a big enough radio hit to at least give them a little traction in Nashville. The music video for the song even got a fair bit of early play on either CMT or GAC. Sadly, it wasn't meant to be and they faded back into the country music ether. This would've been just a few years after Lady A broke out, and Gloriana also had a little bit of success w/ coed vocals. I just wonder, if THE FARM would have tried to break out now in 2022 (after the success of Jimmie Allen & Breland) if maybe it would've been a different story..

In the Music Or Lose It Top 20 Songs last year, I picked a number of country songs that never seemed to become hits: Yola - Stand For Myself; Grace Potter - Release; Seaforth - Breakups. The country music entertainer who deserved better by country music of all time is Kim Richey (Those Words We Said, I Know). Her songs just weren't the same sound as the 90s/00s of that era so she wasn't embraced well by CMT and country radio in CA back then.

In the past several years, a lot of the independent and small label artists have released songs to radio, but did not get the traction they deserved. Music Row had a couple of Cody Jinks songs that reached top 20 on their radio charts. Ain't A Train is a good one. It did not made it to Mediabase and Billboard large market charts, but made it to the small market mainstream charts. Ain't A Train by Cody Jinks hit the top 25 for Billboard Country Radio Indicator charts. Tiffany Woys Loved By You, James Robert Webb Stealing Home and many others that had good runs on different country charts, but not the major ones. Carolina Jones Come In (But Don't Make Yourself Comfortable) is off an Independent Label that is outside the system is the latest one that gain a lot of traction but got stalled at number 40.

I was about ready to say I Don't Remember Me, but I'm glad someone mentioned it. I would say that the most recent song I can think of is Chris Janson's "Bye Mom." I thought that with Elvie Shane's My Boy we may have been entering an age in radio where these very personal, meaningful songs get a chance on radio. But nope, Bye Mom peaked at 39 on the Mediabase charts. And about Caitlyn Smith, while "I Can't" definitely isn't my favorite of hers, if she were ever to have a radio hit that would have been the song. But it only peaked at number 33. Her new single Downtown Baby was in the top 50 for a week just a few weeks ago, but I haven't seen it since.

I also agree with "Betty" (Taylor's country era will always be my favorite), but also 2 LBT songs: "When Someone Stops Loving You", and of course, "Wine, Beer, Whiskey". Why the former stalled at #37 on radio is beyond me. It's an excellent ballad about the shattering pain from a love gone wrong relationship, and how the world is still spinning around, complete with the band's beautiful harmonies in the chorus, as well as lead vocals from Jimi Westbrook. As for the latter, when I hear that opening with the horns, it just makes me want to dance, and even the chorus is so catchy that you can't get it out of your head! Its peak position of #32 was very surprising for this song; I would think it would be a huge summer anthem like "Pontoon". Also, "Bourbon in Kentucky" gives me Gary Allan vibes, as far as the lyrics and sound go, so maybe it was too dark of a single for country radio at the time.

Agreed on so many of these songs! Wanted to share a story about Garth Brooks and "Tacoma" - as part of the launch for Man Against Machine in 2014, Garth joined Twitter and did a secret listening party for the album at The Independent (a club size venue in San Francisco). When he introduced "Tacoma" he made this beautiful speech about how the last song on each of his albums is reserved for a special song/his favorite. He mentioned it was written by a very talented songwriter named Caitlyn Smith and you could tell he absolutely adored that song. In that listening session, "Tacoma" was far and away the stand out. I was bummed about his resistance to streaming mostly because I wanted to hear that song again. When I stumbled upon Caitlyn's 2016 EP, I had forgotten her name but recognized "Tacoma" immediately. Honestly, I think her version is so much better - it's more powerful and shows off her voice incredibly.

So many I could name but the first one that came to my mind is "Dust" by Eli Young Band, such a shocking flop considering it killed the momentum they had with "Crazy Girl", "Even If It Breaks Your Heart", and "Drunk Last Night"

I’m not an expert on chart performances but I think Love and Theft’s Dancing in Circles doesn’t deserve to be forgotten

Always interesting content Grady! I really think Rascal Flatts/Rachel Wammack's duet "Quick, Fast, In A Hurry" deserved top 5 status, as well as "Slow Down" by Gone West. Cheers from Newfoundland, Canada :)

One of my favorite riley green songs that has always been overlooked is little hank! It is a perfect backyard fire song

Mark Wills - Loving Every Minute was a cracking early 00s song that for some reason never made it big on the charts and radio airplay despite having all the qualities of a top radio-friendly single

Girl of the summer by Kip Moore. I went back and watched that video and it has less than a million views. It’s such a great song.

It's a shame that Girl of the Summer and Dirt Road weren't major hits. Obsessed with both of those songs.

A song also never released as a single was "Half of my mistakes" by Gary Allan. It's on his 07 "Living Hard"release. In my opinion it's the best song ever recorded.Out of all music genres I think it's the #1 song of all time. When I hear that song my life is being sung back to me.I love music and I love country music.I've seen Gary Allan 3 times and I haven't heard that song yet.Next time I'm taking a sign.HALF OF MY MISTAKES...(Nobody can tell you a damn thing if your not listening.)

Kip Moore is entirely underrated, his last album wild world is one of the best country albums i’ve ever heard, the song sweet Virginia is a 10/10

Words cannot describe how much I love Bourbon in Kentucky. That song makes my heart happy. I had no idea it was a single.

It's an amazing tune. I actually haven't heard it in a while so I'll be cranking it on my way home today.

I feel like with "Shut Up and Fish", country radio/"music row" was basically trying to say "We've had enough of your sass and trashing of our brand of country music" with all that backlash. Nashville wanted to restore "the status quo" with all the dudes in their trucks taking girls in cutoffs to the riverbank for a hook-up. 🙄
