Yeah, but here's the thing about being a man in his forties (as I am now), you no longer have to hate things because your peers expect you to. Not that my peers really had those expectations in my 30s either, but now I could just throw on a T. Swift shirt and wear it proud and give zero care to anyone who has a problem with it. Also, I have shit to talk about with my niece who just turned 16, which is extra cool.

I buy every line of Anti-Hero, including the "my covert narcissism I disguise as altruism" part. When you're depressed in the middle of the night and needlessly psychoanalyzing yourself, you find a way to twist even your good parts into their absolute worst form. Yes, there is a large element of theater to her charitable work and attempts to be relatable, but after struggling with those thoughts all night, more than likely she woke up the next morning and realized that's ridiculous, of course she can be genuinely kind with no ulterior motive, her brain was being stupid and she's great. That's not what she believed at the time though. Side note when I saw As It Was was #3 I knew that #1 could be nothing else.

Feel like this is one of the big differences between Lizzo and Megan Trainor. Despite both posing themselves as "Body positive" I don't buy it from Trainor at all. Every song of hers seems like she's trying to convince me and herself that she's pretty. It doesn't help that her songs aren't good at all. Lizzo genuinely believes she's the hottest woman on the planet and makes me believe it to. Its a natural confidence that her beauty is so obvious it doesn't need to be justified.

The Taylor Swift narrative has taken quite a few turns. She starts out as the young romantic heroine singing silly love songs like anyone else, but then the inevitable negative attention comes, Taylor absolutely gives a damn about her bad reputation, so she tries a multitude of ways to deal with it. She dismisses the haters because she's actually awesome and those meanies just can't see it. She plays into the idea sarcastically, pretending to embody the worst of what's been said about her through the veil of character. She tries to own being the villain who ruins relationships and friendships on purpose and is directly responsible for the "death" of her old self. She allows this villain self to die so that a new, more chipper self can rise from its ashes (but those haters still need to get a life). And now, Taylor seems to have reached the point of "okay, I'm not actively trying to ruin these things, but it clearly keeps happening," and that leaves her wondering what her role is. She's definitely the protagonist, but she can't claim to be the doe-eyed, squeaky-clean heroine of her youth, yet outright villainy doesn't suit her either. Thus, Taylor has settled on a loose definition of "anti-hero" - a heavily-flawed hero haunted by inner demons and insecurity who tries to do good but frequently messes everything up.

A notion I read somewhere that changed my opinion on this is about wine tasting. You don't need to learn how to taste wine. Taste is inherent. Everyone can drink a wine and tell you whether they like it or not. I found that simple sentiment very reassuring. That said, discussion is good and disagreeing is fine. I personally find I tend to like a lot of things for unconventional reasons. Like... I really like the Percy Jackson movie even though it's so awful because I really enjoyed seeing modern CGI portrayals of Greek mythological monsters. I really like goofy rap music and juvenile humour in rap. One Eminem lyric that sticks out to me is "Your booty is heavy duty like diarrhea." I don't even like scatological humour generally, but I find the juxtaposition of the material with the usual braggadocious nature of rap tickles me. I am a huge fan of the structure of a creative work following it's narrative. One of my favourite anime is the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. That anime has an infamous section called the Endless Eight where the characters are stuck in a time loop, and the anime contains eight episodes that go over a day in that time loop. Each episode is basically the exact same (each day is animated differently, so they weren't exactly lazy about it), and it's a notoriously awful experience to watch... but I love it exactly because of that. It is awful and tedious to watch... just like being trapped in a time loop would be. I never want to suffer that shit again, and I love it so much. If it weren't for this misery, I probably wouldn't regard the anime as more than decent. Like many people, I'm a Harry Potter fan. I know an abnormally large amount about the series. The series has gotten a lot of hate over time, initially just as a rejection of it's popularity, and later on because of Rowling's shit opinions... but almost every criticism of the series is garbage. Almost nobody criticizing it even knows basic details of the series, and that pisses in my corn flakes, and if you're going to piss in my corn flakes, I'm going to put my corn flakes in your urethra.... I digress, my second favourite character in the Harry Potter series is Peter Pettigrew, both because of his role in the overarching plot and how he symbolizes so much of the overall story, but also because of how they massacred my boy.

Well, if you did your research, Taylor Swift is abnormally tall compared to others, and she calls herself “a monster on the hill” meaning she’s really tall, and everyone who’s shorter is “a s*xy baby”.
@goodgrief9174
@goodgrief9174 11 ай бұрын
Honestly, as someone who doesn't like Taylor's music at all (not a hater, just not my cup of tea) I genuinely low-key love that line. When you hear it the first time it sounds absurd and nonsensical, sure, but it makes so much sense when you think about it for a bit. "Everybody is a sexy baby" - everyone is allowed to be both physically attractive and alluring, while also being cute and innocent, making them blameless and perfect regardless of which role they choose to embody. But not Taylor. She's "the monster on the hill". She is not allowed to be sexy or innocent because both of those roles make her seem "monstrous" in the eyes of everyone else. If she tries to be sexy, people say it doesn't suit her. If she tries to be innocent, people say it's just an act. She doesn't fit in no matter what she tries. It could also be referring to what it feels like to have body image issues in a world that values appearance so much. I struggle with that, and I've definitely referred to myself as a swamp monster before, so hearing her describe herself like that really hit me in the heart. But I 100% agree that the chorus was made specifically for TikTok lol

as a 19-year-old, taylor's millennial generation probably thinks of me as the "sexy baby", but i interpreted it as envy over teenagers who are extremely famous and successful almost at taylor's level. which hits hard because even at 19 i feel like i'm too old and underachieving because i'm not some child prodigy. or maybe how looking like a teenager is considered attractive nowadays.

At the risk of sounding like a Swiftie despite not listening to her stuff of my own free will (my sister was the Taylor fan of the family back in the early 2010s), something that's been on my mind about Taylor Swift since the Witness episode of Trainwreckords is that there's one big thing she has that Katy Perry doesn't, and that is charisma. As Todd noted in that video, 2017 was not a good year for either artist, but Swift had the sheer force of personality needed to survive that, whereas Perry ended up singing with a poop puppet in Vegas. Even "Anti-Hero", a song about insecurity and self-loathing, has those same guts to it, carrying an atmosphere of "I know I suck, but goddamn I'm gonna weather through my suckiness to spite God."

Both "Juice" and "About Damn Time" went double platinum - with the former going single platinum in the year it was released - so I'm not sure relying on the charts without accounting for certifications is the right move. Maybe the problem is no one right place to look for all of a year's certifications, but at least Todd could make an exception for songs he both remembers AND have gone platinum (or even gold). It wasn't a decent criteria in the past because, even five years ago, only eight songs went platinum the year they were released. But the next year there were 25 and "Juice" was one, in spite of Juice not making the year-end 100 list. At this point, platinum certification can be considered an alternative to Billboard, sort of like Cash Box was decades ago.

That 23 song by whats-his-face is just soooooo fucking creepy! Maybe it's because my romantic relationships have been pretty heteronormative (Man and Woman at the time - I am genderfluid but back in my early 20s, I wasn't aware of that. I knew I wasn't cis but not exactly trans, and I did not have the vocabulary for it, so I assumed I was a cis tomboy girl), but that song reminds me of my dipshit exes that would absolutely say something like "Remember you were 23 with me" to my face as a way to assert themselves above me. Also, the video itself, specifically with the woman wearing the VR headset; It has a sexist undertone of portraying her as a successful career woman with a big house, but she's all alone so it's completely empty except for her, and she's portrayed as miserable, and the only thing that has been able to bring her joy is literally reliving her 20s with her good-looking boyfriend where everything is bright and colorful contrasted to her dark and dreary present. To me, it just screams, "See? You could've been happy with me, but you gave that up for a career, so now, instead of a simple, fulfilling country life, you get to dance with ghosts." Just... very "Women will never be truly happy if they try to be like men and pursue a successful career. Just stick to being a stay-at-home wife with a litter of children!" Again, that might not be the intent or message of the song, but that's not the vibe I get from the video, and just being a 35 year old person who was growing up in the tail end of Second Wave Feminism, and was exposed to the conversation around gender roles and cishet white women in particular "bucking the system" and breaking out of the Barefoot and Pregnant in the Kitchen image... that's where my mind is going when I see a cishet white dude, intentionally or not, telling a cishet (white) woman that *he* was her "key", her "chance" at happiness and she squandered it for a career.

Todd has this quote explaining his fascination with pop music, saying he views it as this big narrative with character development and story arcs, which was a paradigm-shifting notion for me. Taylor Swift's career plays so well into that idea, it's as if it's actually being written.

@@jepros Honestly seems like the closest comparison is... professional wrestling. No, really: you have faces (Carly Rae Jepsen, Olivia Rodrigo) and heels (50% of the time, that's Kanye West), sometimes faces become heels (Taylor Swift on Reputation), heels become faces (arguably Bieber had temporarily achieved this back in the What Do You Mean era), and faces turned heels turn face again, but with a darker edge (Taylor Swift on Anti-Hero). The "character arcs" regard real people, and everyone knows the whole thing is made up corporate bullshit so that almost frees you from having to worry about how "real" anyone is, because if everyone is fake then no one is. @@jepros It's actually simpler, heels are villains and faces are heroes. In wrestling, heels do things like openly cheat during matches without getting punished by refs (until the pivotal moment of course), or do things that are meant to be risible and disgusting to make the audience jeer and root against them - e.g., telling the city the match is happening in that it smells like garbage and looks worse, acting like an arrogant jackass, offstage antics where they attack or bully other wrestlers, so on. Faces are noble and simply in it for the love of the game, basically just imagine Goku and that's a classic wrestling face. So, for comparison, TS's Reputation era was obviously a heel turn, that was literally how _she_ presented it, as her going to the dark side, being the venomous narcissist everyone thinks she is, so on. After that was a gradual buildup to a face turn, as she moved towards more adult, complex music for a while, before finally going huge with Midnights and staging a full time remorseful, reformed heel comeback. Carly Rae Jepsen is an eternal face because everyone loves her, and Nicki Minaj is pretty much always a heel because she intentionally portrays herself as... well, a psycho bitch, pretty much. The thing is that heels can be popular by just being massive pricks to the point where it either becomes funny, or if the promoter screws up and their faces are unlikable, so people starting cheering for the designated villain to win. Ric Flair, one of the greatest wrestlers ever, was basically in an eternal superposition of heel and face for his entire career because he would do heel shit all the time but because he was so likable it came off as just being cool.

Funny how Todd said that Taylor's Reputation era could "Really be the end game" for Taylor. Now, not only did she make the longest #1 by track length (All Too Well TV), but she also put Anti-Hero at #1 on the charts for 8 nonconsecutive weeks, debuted 10 songs in the top 10, and got #1 on Todd's year-end list. The first time I heard Anti-hero I was startled by how accurately it voiced my internal thoughts. I felt exposed, like I had been doing something stupid and suddenly realized someone had been standing there the whole time and seen the whole thing. Even the "Sexy baby" line, though in a different context. My SO and I are a good 7-10 years older than most of our friends, having met in online spaces where that sort of thing doesn't matter as much so long as you have tastes in common. On more than one occasion though, I've been reminded of just how young they are, and felt that awkwardness of being out of place among them. I even refer to them as babies when they dare to remind me that I'm an aging woman in the twilight of her life at 32. It really is one of those songs that cuts to the quick for those of us who get far too into our own heads on sleepless nights.

I don't know if Todd is ever going to see this, but i want to respond to the claim that "he has bad taste and we shouldn't watch him." I know it's likely a joke, but I love watching your videos BECAUSE you unapologetically share your perspective and tastes. There is no pretension, no facade of expertise. It's just you sharing your opinion and analysis of popular music or music in general. At the end of the day, art is here for humans to enjoy, and I love seeing other people's perspectives, and you are able to share your perspective in a way that is entertaining and accessible. That's all, thanks for being you. :) EDIT: I just realized I misread Todd McDonald as Old McDonald. 🤦 Still, I stand by my original point. Even though I will concede that if someone says anything Todd McDonald has done is better than Billy Jean, yeah, they are probably a bigot.

Um, okay. So, first, I didn't say Todd had bad or good taste in music. I was just saying I like his perspective. 2nd, when it comes to any kind of art, I firmly believe that it is too subjective to make any kind of definitive statements like X Song is objectively better than Y Song. Let's take your Old McDonald to Billy Jean comparison. Yes, in most cases, most people would say Billy Jean is better than Old McDonald. But I can think of an audience who may disagree with that... 3-8 year Olds. Because that is the demographic it is actually for, and they don't have the experience or ability to appreciate Billy Jean. (Speaking very broadly of course. I think kids can still like Billy Jean, but hopefully, you get my point.) So yeah, that is why I am not interested in what is "objectively" the best song. I am much more interested in A) whether or not I enjoy the song, and B) other people's perspective on the song, because I think it is interesting. Even if I don't agree with them, I find other people's opinions about art fascinating because I feel like I am learning something new about them, and also indirectly the human condition. Anyway, end of rant. Hope you have a good day.

I was surprised as the countdown went on and I gradually realized the final spot was going to have to be Anti-Hero. But, it's a pretty unstoppable jam. (My personal interpretation to the "sexy baby" line is that it's speaking to her insecurity of being a pop star in her 30s. Most of the people doing what she does are a decade younger than her. They're a bunch of "sexy babies." She's ancient by pop star standards. It's not easy to stay on the pop charts in your 30s and beyond. I think that fear of being made irrelevant by the incoming younger, sexier replacements is what the line is getting at.)

That’s an good take on the line. My initial read of the line was that grown folks are ‘sexy babies’ in that their bodies are grown up and sexy but inside they’re immature and have no idea what they’re doing, just flailing about like a baby. Like how even as you get older you still feel like a child, unsure and emotionally vulnerable. Admittedly I didn’t know it was a reference at the time.

I love the double meaning of 'look out for yourself', such a great way to ground an angsty song in its own unhealthy mindset. The only things I'll give the song are that it gave JID a hit, and the shit eating cowa-I mean "Non Rap" version has some Pro LGBTQ messages in the bridge, and considering the year we had, any support is good support, I guess. Otherwise, I can't stand how boring and lifeless it feels. It's not nearly as awful as Bones or Cut Throat, but in a way, it actually makes the song worse in a few aspects. To me, it doesn't just sound angsty. It sounds bitter, unearnedly melodramatic, and when it's coming from a band that has bitched about people years prior saying they'd never make it, I lose my ability to not hear it, at least somewhat, as someone whining about those who don't like them. I hated that when it was a plague across a lot of hard rock and nu metal bands across the 2000's, I hate it here. Again, I wish I liked it, and if you enjoy it, I'm not gonna sit there and act like you should hate it. I'm happy you enjoy it, but I just want these guys to either go away, or make literally anything else.

Todd, every year you isolate such a satisfying like mashup snippet to play between picks. It's pure audio candy.

He used to use DJ Earworm’s year-end mixes a while ago. But I like his current ones.

@@gallagathYes, but what I'm complimenting is Todd finding a tiny moment from the mashup that works on its own really well, even repeatedly. It's really clever and I appreciate it every year!

Part of the hate Stapleton gets is jealousy. He came out of the bluegrass world and has managed to become a huge star, which is backwards in modern country. A lot of country artists do their bluegrass album once they're established and Stapleton just came out of the Steeldrivers swinging.

I love the comment on "As It Was" as the post-pandemic requiem of sorts for those who survived it, especially while trying to live up to "how young people should live" mantras of pop culture; in some ways, "About Damn Time" is the delayed "Hot Vax Summer" "roaring '20s" fantasy many of us wanted, a chance to either return to form or catch up to the rest of the world willing to give us mulligans, but "As It Was," with its "Viva la Vida" post-recession/empire vibes BTW, is the reality Gen Y+Z live with in the shadow of boomers' and Xers eternal resource wars and self-dealing (except our parents when they're nice lol), a more subtle, bittersweet hope in the form of our willingness to carry on whatever may come. That said the world and especially femmes/LGBTQ/BIPOC, needed Special and Renaissance as album statements in this turbulent and often frightening time and I don't doubt the Grammys will recognize this, besides the sheer musical crispness found on so many of the tracks therein.

I had not made the mental connection to the previous centuries "roaring 20's" and this century's new 20's, but now that I realize how tese two era's will be contrasted... well. I didn't expect to be quite this emotionally mindblown by scanning the comment section in a Todd Top Ten video. Sorry for not engaging with the comments on Harry Styles though, I know nothing of the man.

Oh yeah, the first time I heard As It Was I immediately realized it was really about COVID the same vibes-based, if-you-know-you-know way One by U2 is really about AIDS. I'm surprised I haven't seen it discussed in those terms more.
