I can see the potential in the game, and to get this kind of result from an unsuitable engine feels like an impressive achievement even to a non-developer. I'm also not a fan of video reviews that just berate a game/dev the entire time - instead I try to look for what they've done well, point out some mistakes, and mention areas for improvement. @@Graeldon This is a good take. Considering how over saturated Steam is, especially with games that are direct asset flips or achievement farms, it's nice if reviewers try to at least point out a devs intentions. This person (or persons) clearly tried to do something neat, and even if they decided to move forward with another project in RPG Maker, they probably learned a lot, which could make a second game better. It's far to easy to have your game buried and not receive any helpful criticism or any positive feedback.

Yeah, someone who uses RPG Maker here - I can attest that managing to make even THIS much work in the engine is really damn impressive, but you were right on the money that most of your problems are because of the engine. For example, your issues with hit detection and the wonky platforming? RPG Maker works on a tile system, and it has this funky deal with collision that when an object moves from Tile A to Tile B, the hitbox will IMMEDIATELY move to Tile B but the sprite will "lag behind" to show the movement happening. I am admittedly super impressed with how Red actually properly arcs when jumping though, and I'm deeply curious to find out HOW that happens under the hood.

Hearing that it's a Platformer made in RPG Maker, I instantly thought "well, it worked once before, so why not?" because the LISA games (and some of its fan games, I think) are platformers made with RPG maker. Granted, the combat is still the regular turn-based one, but the exploration part is a platformer. Maybe that was partially inspiration for creating this game? Either way, at least this is a game where there was a clear intend and goal in mind to create *a game*, as opposed to some of the stuff we've seen before that only exist to make money.
@Graeldon

I'm looking forward to playing the LISA games eventually, I've heard interesting things about them. I also agree that it's heartening to see the dev was actually trying to make something worthwhile, even if they fell short. It's far more than can be said for the cash grab games like Arcane Raise.

RPG Maker isn't a bad engine. It's only bad FOR ACTION GAMES. It's great for turn based RPGs and Adventure/Horror games and is basically the go-to engine for those. But for action games? Yeah it completely sucks and you're better off using Gadot, the similar to RM "Pixel Game Maker MV", or even your own custom engine and coding it from scratch.

Honestly, just by not being a fully made of default assets and nothing but a series of random/edgy jokes by a five year old, I can guarantee you that this is not the worst RPG maker game. As for using it for things other than RPGs, it's a bit of a "bad workman blames his tools" situation. Ever since XP, RPG Maker is fully scriptable and you can make it do whatever you want. But it will not *help* you with any of that, so you might as well not use an engine at all. Normally, I would applaud the developer for trying to bend the engine to their will, maybe as a steping stone to going on to other engines. But charging money for this game makes it a bit undefendable. :/
@Milennin
@Milennin Ай бұрын
Both the developer's efforts and the tools used matter. A good craftsman wouldn't choose (insert unorthodox replacement tool) rather than simply a hammer to drive a nail into a wooden plank. Even if you could technically achieve the same with something different, you're just making it harder on yourself, requiring more time to get it done and risk more to end up with a bad result. Part of being a good craftsman is using the right tools for the job.
@nordern1
@nordern1 Ай бұрын
@@Milennin If you give a good craftsmen a unorthodox replacement tool, they can probably still make that work. The nails might look a bit rougher, but the overall quality will probably still be higher than that of an unskilled worker with the best hammer in the world. A lot of the gameplay programming of making fluent platforming and action combat is done manually, regardless of the engine you work in. As I said, RPG maker won't help you, but it's also not a giant hurdle.
@Milennin
@Milennin Ай бұрын
@@nordern1 This game, made by clearly a novice in game development, was done using an engine that only works against what they're trying to achieve. Sure, an actual skilled programmer could manage if they put in the time and effort as you can technically make anything work with the right code. The point is that there'd be better options available, hence why RPG Maker isn't ever used to make 2D action platformers by people who know what they're doing and value their time.

This game is very impressive, especially the animation and the character design for the classic big bad wolf! I would love if someone took worked with the original developer to produce a remake of this game. It would benefit from a change in engine, tighter controls, tighter level design, more mechanics like a healing spell, and maybe making the art style consistent. I imagine that the 4th ending is the grandma and the wolf getting their power drained while the soul shards cure the princess of whatever was ailing her.

@Graeldon honestly, this isn't _as_ dumb as you'd think it'd be. Under the hood, rpg maker mv/mz is just a bunch of JavaScript running in a web browser. Mv and mz let you freely modify all of the JavaScript the engine uses to run the game, so in the end making a platformer in rpg maker is just a slightly less convenient way to make platformer in JavaScript: a language you can use to make pretty much anything. If they did this without making any plugins or modifying the underlying JavaScript, then yes, i agree, it's very dumb. If not, it's not the _worst_ idea if you're a gamedev that _really_ doesn't want to make a dialogue or equipment system. Still weird though, obviously.

Little rule of thumb for any aspiring developers: do not build your platforming around Coyote Time, it's a feature intended to make platforming feel a little smoother should you screw up your timing not to make your platforming harder because of it being there, unless you're damn good at design like Kaizo you should avoid exploiting it as much as possible.

Every time I see an RPGMaker game that includes plataforming, it remembers me a game named "Wandering Souls" by Estheone that I left without finishing a decade ago, just because I refused to lower down the difficulty. It was the first time I seen a platformer on that engine, and not only that but a, though limited, hack'n'slash with RPG-leveling mechanics. I still think having most, if not all, assets stolen from other games is okey if the work on the engine to make it suitable for the gameplay is well done, at least if it's also free. It's a shame the developer original post at the rpgmaker forum got down with the whole forum, relying now on secondary uploaders from the Touhou and RPGMaker community. Seeing that many of the most famous old flash game developers have done games up to now, makes me question what about so many doujin devs. There're hundreds of games outside of the main platforms, played solely by niche communities to the point it starts to become lost media that nobody will remember. That's why I find this series interesting, because it's not about finding good games but to find the interesting in everything. Even bad games may hold something that is unusual, making them special even if very flawed. If all games were just as good, they would be all the same as boring.

The only way I can see it getting more attention is if that sequel ever releases, which is looking less and less likely with each year...

I love it when people make stuff using tools that are really not designed for what they are doing. Even if the final result it creates is messy, I believe that it should definitely be encouraged that developers experiment with such things. Though I can understand people having reservations about the price in cases like this one.

This didn't seem too bad for an action platformer made in RPG Maker. I once played what attempted to be an open-world side-scrolling beat-'em-up made in RPG Maker and it was genuinely the worst game I've ever played. It was an absolute mess of RPG, real-time action and point-'n'-click elements haphazardly thrown together in RPG Maker XP of all things. I still can't believe I spent ten whole dollars on it.

A strange game. Clearly, quite a lot of effort was put into making functional 2D side-view controls with action elements, and some of the assets look pretty impressive, but then there's also a lot of things that appear barely touched at all, like the menu screens, random map assets that are default RPG Maker stuff, or custom made but clash with the other assets. Seems strange to put in so much effort in certain aspects and then half-assing the rest, unless they were on some deadline or stopped caring at some point and just wanted to release it.

I finally did it and got all five endings. (four normal and the secret boss) I think you're right in that the game is really difficult due to jank mechanics, but was way too hard on what is kinda like managing to get a commuter car to become an airplane. It won't work and shouldn't work, and yet here we are flying in places that never existed before. What made the game bearable though was setting up my controller instead of playing on keyboard. Once I got a hand on the mechanics, I set my controller to be similar to that of Mega Man X in having the dash and jump next of each other. I've uploaded my controls to the Steam Page if anyone else decides to give this game a try.

This game is not good, but it's... strangely interesting. The combination of a genre and an engine that's wildly unsuitable for that genre is fascinating to me, not to mention that the story has quite a cool twist to it. The format of the game, having you run through the same forest day in, day out is quite interesting too.

Yeah, this is about how I expected an RM platformer to go. There's definitely potential here, and it's impressive that they were able to make it function, but it would have been infinitely better in any other engine. Not because RM is a bad engine (I love RM and have a lot of experience with it myself), but because it's built to create a very specific type of game, and this strays way too far from that specific intent. You can translate a top-down RPG to a first-person dungeon crawler perfectly fine (I've done that with the help of scripts/plugins); hell, you can even do Zelda-like real-time combat fairly well; but it's a lot harder to do so with a platformer, where the engine doesn't have any sort of physics, which is pretty important for that kind of game.

Wholly disagree that "using RPG Maker blocked any chance for success with this game." What blocked the success was the dev's ability to develop a game, consider the game play, and play test, play test, play test. You can do a lot with RPG Maker - don't let the name fool you. Especially since this appears to be built on the JS-based engines (MV/MZ), as long as you are smart enough, you can build whatever you want in the engine.
@Graeldon

It's okay to disagree! My argument is that this is a competent but perhaps inexperienced dev that chose their tool first rather than the most appropriate tool for the task.

I would advise not telling people to stop using a specific engine even if it's not the intended use, there are plenty of examples(including this) that show the engine not being designed with this in mind doesn't mean it can't handle the task, with more time and care put in I'm certain it can work wonders, don't get me wrong there are certainly limitations but I doubt the average user will ever actually run into any hard walls.
@Graeldon
@Graeldon Ай бұрын
One lesson I heard ages ago regarding game design (which may or may not be true) is that it should follow GEL: Game (concept) -> Engine -> Language. The engine you use should be based on the type of game you want to make, not the other way around. So in this instance, it feels like the dev picked the engine (RPG Maker) first, likely because it's what they are familiar with. I think they did a good job adapting the engine to the game genre, but they likely would've had an easier time and a better result by using a different engine.
@vulpinitemplar5036
@vulpinitemplar5036 Ай бұрын
@@Graeldon from what I understand engine sits in this weird limbo where it's placement depends entirely on the user and their design process, it's a good excuse to learn other engines however especially if it's easily accessible and well documented :) In theory yes an engine better suited for the task will result in a smoother time however comfort zones are a hell of a drug to put it lightly :T

I mentioned this on your announcement, and I’ll say it again: regardless of how scuffed this game is, there was clearly effort and a vision here, made obvious simply from trying to use RPG Maker to make a game of a completely different set of genres. That makes it leagues better than the asset flip trash flooding the bottom of the barrel. Especially to someone like me who would come out of a game like this admiring the potential of the ideas. If I have any advice for the devs: learn how to code. And I mean that in the best way possible. RPG Maker is capable of a lot of amazing stuff-this game even as it stands is testament to that-but it does still have limitations. If you can learn to build a game outside of it, though, in a space where you decide what limitations you have, I think you’ll go far. Edit: and it turns out you had much the same opinion there. Which I take as a good sign.

Wow, uh.... yeah, you were being INCREDIBLY unfair to this. This is kind of an amazing feat, and so much ambition and hard work was clearly put into this. You seem to be actively disrespecting this game for actually trying, and taking a steaming dump on it for things that weren't even it's own fault. This is one of the most legitimately unfair and terrible reviews of anything I have ever seen. I think you either need to re-think all your priorities and critique ability, or just flat out drop this little "review" project of yours... because you are absolutely NOT a fair reviewer, nor a good judge of anything.

Hi! Firstly, thanks for taking the time to comment and share your thoughts. Considering that I was honest about the gameplay and level design aspects, and complimented the dev on their ambition, and even what they did manage to achieve with the engine, I'd appreciate it if you could elaborate on how I "Took a steaming dump on it". As I state in my verdict, the dev clearly has talent and passion, but did themselves disservice with their choice of engine. What they created is impressive from a technical view, but that does nothing to change the fact that it is a wholly unenjoyable game to play.
@TomaszRyszkowski

I'll start by saying that I am biased, because i edited this video but yeah, i'm not sure if we watched the same video? The impressivenes of the game being done in rpg maker has been stated many times throughout the video, but clearly the game just wasn't fun to play, the gameplay loop was pretty barebones and the game clearly lacks depth to even slightly justify the 12 dollars pricetag. The only real redeeming factor are the multiple endings, but still to actually achieve them you would need to either save-scum or play the same few levels (with no real progression, everything stays the same) over and over. The artstyle is pretty generic and some textures stick out like a sore thumb. This just isn't a good game, and for what you get, the price is just nuts. I do understand that it propably was somebody's passion project, and that they put alot of work into it, but we just cannot give positive rating to an unfun $12 USD game purely on the basis if it being done in a weird engine. I guess we should put more emphasis on showing exactly how boring and repetetive some games can and exactly why they're just not fun (Altough i think that Grael did an amazing job with the script as it is)
