Best to place a zip tie on the stem you’re splitting as a stop point. Use Teflon tape at the graft point. Put another zip tie at the node with a toothpick on either side of the split.

John King great tip! Thank you. Ever heard of using aloe vera to keep it moist?
@johnking1978

Farmer George, Too great a risk of clogging the graft or culturing a contaminant. I normally apply Beeswax Chapstick over the Teflon and Stem to seal the entire graft area. The Ziplock over the Stem is unnecessary with a Wax Seal. The edge of the zip ties make a good reservoir. 😳 Now you got me giving away more of my tricks. 😁

This is the first time I have the opportunity to see how to graft a plant , the easy way. No complication and no fuss with applying wax on the union and wrapping a cloth or tape. Thank you Farmer George. incidently, I've heard you can graft peppers, tomatoe and eggplant all together on one plant. Would be Interesting to see that.
@FarmerGeorge
@FarmerGeorge 5 жыл бұрын
Bhalchandra Desai thank you! The reason people used tape or wrap is so the union doesn’t dry out. So make sure yours don’t dry out or they won’t heal. I’ve also heard about the eggplant and tomatoes on pepper plants (and vice versa), I’m assuming it works because they’re all part of the nightshade family. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

I had the wrong approach, I grafted then watched the how to videos. My leaves wilted as it was in the heat. Dunked it in the sink and the leaves were rehydrated just 2 hours later. Thats a very lucky graft I think. Then day 2 I learnt to cover with bags... Its how not to graft but still succeed video. Also watch for the sharps!

Question. Are there benefits of grafting plants that are of the same species? Like if I have 2 chili peppers with seeds that came from the same fruit, are there any benefits of grafting one onto the other? Does there need to be an age difference between the scion and the rootstock? Does the rootstock need to be older than the scion so it can make use of the longer roots, or does the scion have to be older than the rootstock so it can grow fruit easier?
@FarmerGeorge
@FarmerGeorge 3 жыл бұрын
Hey sorry it took so long to respond... to answer your questions: - I haven’t experimented enough to know about the same species. But I don’t think it matters too much. I’ve heard you can graft peppers to tomato plants or vice versa (double check on that). - I don’t know about the age difference, but I think plants in the middle-aged group would work best - to me, a scion that is mature would be fine, but you’re probably growing plants at the same time unless you have some from indoors you want to bring outdoors?

@FarmerGeorge

The plant was in its first year. I think it was probably 9 or 10 months old at the time of grafting. Pepper plants can survive for years if you over winter them properly. Here’s the plant 9-month after this video was made. It over-wintered beautifully (let me know if you want the link to that video on how to over winter), but the grafts ultimately dried out. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZ3Op51pot9qpqs

D'nania P I’m assuming they are bringing aphids to your plants. It’s hard to tell without a picture. You can put organic ant traps outside to try and control them. Also, many things cause yellowing of the leaves. Is your soil very wet? If so, let it dry out a little bit. Peppers like to be watered when they need it. I like to let mine wilt and then water them a lot and the perk back up. I let the plants tell me when they want water. Hope this helps!

Three fifths of a centimetre, not heard a measurement expressed that way before, how many millimetres please? Interesting way to have a variety on one plant rather than too many of the same. An old fashioned wooden spring clothes peg with its round ‘hole’ would be an option to try to hold the graft in place.

Susan Mulenga think of grafting as like a way for your plants to get water and nutrients only. You might be onto something though. If you add your bell cuttings to your cayenne plant that has more branches than your bell (this is my assumption), you might increase your yield.

Let’s say you grafted a Carolina reaper on a bell pepper, will it still be hot? And can you graft any plant on any other plant?
@FarmerGeorge
@FarmerGeorge 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I believe they were 7 gallon containers. And not they do not change at all when they are grafted. They keep the same genetics as the original plant it came from. Therefore Carolina Reapers will not be less hot if grafted to a Bell. If you are grafting chili peppers to other chili peppers I’m pretty sure you can use any type! Jay for fun of course! You can have many different peppers from one plant. Also, if your plants suffer damage like from a storm, this is a way you can save plants by grafting the broken branches back on the affected plants or onto other plants.
@mytech6779
@mytech6779 4 жыл бұрын
Grafting is often used to match a disease resistant root-stock with some other top. Many melons and cucumbers are grafted for this reason. Tomatoes are often grafted onto eggplant roots both for disease and tolerance to flooding. Also you may want stronger roots to anchor a plant that is normally easy to tip over. In fruit trees the roots can be adapted to the type of soil and the roots can also be used to cause the top to grow as a dwarf.

Maybe grafting a different variety with them might help with pollination. Your channel has me thinking up uses for grafting.
@FarmerGeorge
@FarmerGeorge 4 жыл бұрын
John Liberty I have not yet found a difference in root vigor because I haven’t thought about it- but that’s a good idea. Sorry about the Reaper. My Reapers don’t do well in very hot temperatures so maybe by putting them under the other plants shades them and that’s why they do better? Grafting a Reaper to a plant that pollinates in the heat would be a cool experiment. Thanks - I am glad my channel has got you thinking. I like to hear from you and to learn about what I need to do as well. Maybe I’ll keep my Reaper in a partially shaded spot this year and see if it does better.

@@FarmerGeorge I am wondering how to test for root vigor, after all I do not have soil penetrating radar eyes lol. Cayenne Peppers produce the fastest out of the peppers I grow, not sure if its because they will flower at a cooler temperature in early spring or if because they establish their roots faster. I guess if I take a few clones/cuttings and see what roots the fastest I will know who has the best root vigor. Maybe using that as rootstock and grafting a favorite pepper that does not produce many fruits on its own will have positive results.

I over-wintered it and it got infested with fungus gnats. It's currently in my yard trying to recover. We shall see how it does!

Habanero in Soy Sauce makes soy sauce very hot. And then, remove the habanero to make habanero sauce.

Great video but wth is 3/5 of a centimeter 😂. It's ok. Even as American I still use Metric when I can. Its just more accurate. Love the demo. 🙂
