Back in the day, "bald" meant white haired. The bald eagle has a head of white feathers, hence the name.

Bald eagle is short for piebald. A piebald or pied animal is one that has a pattern of unpigmented spots on a pigmented background of hair, feathers or scales. Thus a piebald black and white dog is a black dog with white spots. The animal's skin under the white background is not pigmented

I may be wrong but I believe it goes back even further. Native Americans called them bald because they had no word for white feathers or something along these lines. Or there word further translate to bald.

Hi guys. The arch is in St. Louis Missouri. The Bald Eagle got it's name from the Olde English word Balde which means white. They felt the white head of the eagle made it look bald as well.

The silver arch you saw is in the city of St. Louis, Missouri. In early American days, St. Louis was known as the "gateway to the west". All of the old cowboy wagon trains you see in the movies, well most of them, started in St. Louis. At some point, that arch was built as a monument to the city being the gateway to the west. It is like a symbol of walking under the arch is the first step toward the western US. Also, it is situated right on the west bank of the Mississippi River, the longest river in America that is generally used to separate the western US from the eastern US.

Washington, DC.. as you stated most of the buildings are in a straight line with the White House being the exception. Starting from the Lincoln Memorial, you then have the huge Reflecting pool, which end just before the World War II Memorial. On the other side of 17th street you have the large area that surrounds the Washington Monument. On the other side of 14th street you have the mall, which is surrounded on both sides by a number of museums and galleries. The Mall is also where many large gathering events takes place. At the other end of the Mall is the Ulysses S. Grant Memorial, then the Capitol Building and the Supreme Court Building. Going Back in the line to the Washington Monument, the White House sits perpendicular to the line and is separated from the Washington Monument by a large circle called The Elipse.

The Gateway Arch is in St. Louis, Missouri on the bank of the Mississippi River. It represents the Gateway to the Westward Expansion through the Louisiana Purchase. It's in a beautiful park right on the edge of downtown St. Louis. The museum inside is very interesting and there's a theater inside which shows a film about the arc. And, of course, you can ride up inside it to look out at the top.

Bald Eagle - Name comes from the distinctive white head, and the old English word, balde, which means "white".
@jimgreen5788
@jimgreen5788 6 күн бұрын
Jono, I know you were joking when you lifted your cap to bring out the word "bald". But do you know how that eagle species got its name? Back several hundred years ago, a man with white hair was described as being bald, and bald eagles have white feathers in the same place. Little known and less important fact here: once a year, the Golden Gate is closed to traffic for a few hours, so that a race can be run on it. Since there are 640 acres to a square mile, 1300 of them translates to 2.03 sq. mi./5.26 sq.km.--the size of Mt. Rushmore. The cowboys sitting around the campfire was in Blazing Saddles, and was the first time in movie history that farting was included. I beg to differ with her, in that cowboys weren't the biggest group at the Alamo; it was mostly military men, and people who already lived in TX, and wanted their freedom from Mexico. Just a little history lesson here: when I was a kid in the '50s, cartoons were the likes of Bugs Bunny. Now, they've degraded to the likes of Family Guy and his rude remarks. The Coliseum was an amazing build, but 2000 years before that, the pyramids were built. By the way, the actor from Planet of the Apes was Charlton Heston, who also starred in Ben Hur, and played Moses in the 10 Commandments back in the '60s. Just before the stars and stripes was an arch, which is our newest national park, having been upgraded just a few years ago in St. Louis, MO, and is called the Gateway Arch, which is to commemorate the westward expansion of this country in the early part of the 1800s.

Interesting gold nugget of information.....the Golden Gate Bridge is constantly being repainted. Due to the harsh conditions of wind and seawater that blast the bridge constantly, it is necessary for it to be repainted and because it is so immense, it basically just takes place all year long. Also, the color is so iconic that you can actually get the paint color, which is "Golden Gate Orange". The first color was "International Orange" but since that time, and because of the romance and icon-ism associated with the bridge, it was renamed to "Golden Gate Orange".

Kat, there was quite a bit of mechanical technology coming out of the 1800's. Steam powered locomotives. The industrial revolution was in full swing. The pre-cursor to tabulators/sorters were made and then used in the 1890 census. The concept of punch cards (taken from pattern looms) would ultimately lead to early computing in the mid-1900s.

For me part of the fun of going to the top of the Washington Monument was to walk down using the stairs rather than riding back down in the elevator. I noticed the comment about the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. There are stairs there too though they're not supposed to be used, at least not when I was there. I don't know if they're better blocked off now than when I was there as an early teen or if people are now allowed to use them but back then there was a single chain with a sign telling you to not use the stairs ... when I thought no one was watching I stepped over the chain and headed down. I didn't get far before I was told to come back up and ride down. I wanted to say I walked down from the top of both the Washington Monument and the Gateway Arch.

For seeing "Famous People" If you look, you probably never find them as they try to blend in, otherwise they would never get a moments piece to themselves. You usually run into them anywhere. The man you pointed out that ("He was on Grace and Franky"). We live in Beaufort, SC, they have made movies here, but it's not famous for that. Forrest Gump was filmed here and Radio, but.... My mother worked in a hair salon inside Walmart, and he came in and got his hair cut. I've seen Bill Murray in Charleston, SC twice. Mr. T. I saw in Florida when I was young and when we were riding an Amtrak, my father sat next to someone from NYC to Poughkeepsie. They talked the whole way. When we got off, my mother was beside herself saying "You know who that was?"" I forget who it was but some really big daytime soap star from the 80's. So, I guess what I am saying, you can find them anywhere expect in the obvious Hollywood area. And you see them when you least expect to.

Many famous people do live around that general part of Los Angeles but tourists aren't going to know where to go. When the name bald eagle was given, in English it only meant a white head. Only later has the term come to mean lacking hair.

They are called bald eagles because from a distance they look bald with their white head feathers.

You should watch the movie, “Field of Dreams” it is an iconic baseball field in the middle of cornfield. It is origin of the saying, “if you build it, he will come.” Starting last year they play 1 MLB professional baseball game at the field. The field is located in Dyersville, Iowa and is so cool. You should watch the movie at least because it is a fantastic movie. Also the movie with the farting cowboys is called Blazing Saddles. It another great movie, but would suggest adults watch it alone first before letting kids watch it was it has some inappropriate language in it.

"The term bald actually derives from an Old English word that had two meanings. One definition meant “white or pale”- which aptly described the head coloration of the eagle. However, another definition meant “bare or bold”. This second meaning is likely why the early European settlers named them bald eagles- because their white heads stood out bare against the darker feathers of their wings and bodies." The Statue of Liberty is made of copper and the weather oxidized it and changed it to the green color it is known by today. Gustave Eiffel who designed the Eiffel Tower, designed the metal structure/frame but not the rest. The National Mall consists of the Capitol Building at one end, the Washington Monument in the center and the Lincoln Memorial at the opposite end. The White House isn't on The Mall. It is located parallel to and faces the Washington Monument. Other notable attractions along the mall are The Smithsonian Museum, American History Museum, National History Museum, National Gallery, Air and Space Museum, American Indian Museum as well as the Korean War and World War II memorials, Vietnam Veteran's memorial, DC War memorial, US Holocaust museum, and the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. I know you want to come here and visit Texas first but you also said you LOVE museums and history and you can't get more history anywhere than on the east coast of the US.
